Dutch violin virtuoso Lisa Jacobs is known for her passionate performances, interesting programs, and communicative qualities on stage. At the age of 17, Lisa made her successful debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Riccardo Chailly. She has played all around the world ever since, both as a soloist with renowned orchestras and conductors, as a recitalist and at chamber music festivals. Lisa Jacobs collaborated with amongst others Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Brussels Philharmonic, Bremer Philharmoniker, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and respected conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Riccardo Chailly and Carlos Miguel Prieto. Miss Jacobs has made numerous international acclaimed CD recordings. Besides her concert career Lisa Jacobs is a professor of violin at the Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium. Miss Jacobs is a proud Pirastro Artist since 2017.

De Noorse componist Harald Sæverud werd geboren in Bergen en ontving zijn eerste muzikale lessen op het lokale conservatorium van Borghild Holmsen. Reeds gedurende zijn conservatoriumtijd werkte hij aan wat later de 1e van zijn 9 symfonieën zou worden. Dit werk bestaande uit twee fantasieën zorgde ervoor dat hij verder mocht studeren in Berlijn. Na het horen van het eerste gedeelte was iedereen zo onder de indruk van zijn talent dat hem een studiebeurs werd toegekend en hij onder leiding van zijn docent Friedrich Koch het tweede gedeelte in Duitsland vervolmaakte. Dit nieuwe gedeelte werd in première gebracht door de befaamde Berliner Philharmoniker.
Na zijn studie in Berlijn verhuisde Sæverud in 1922 terug naar Bergen waar hij eigenlijk de rest van zijn leven zou blijven wonen.
Terwijl zijn vroege werken een duidelijk laat-romantische stijl laten zien, zorgt Sæverud’s terugkeer naar Bergen voor een zeer grote hoorbare invloed van de natuur in zijn muziek en bloeit ook zijn Noorse identiteit als componist op. Tijdens de invasie van de Duitsers in 1940 ontpopt Sæverud zich als een heldhaftig culturele strijder met de creatie en uitvoeringen van zijn drie oorlogssymfonieen: no. 5 'Quasi una fantasia', no. 6 'Sinfonia Dolorosa', en no. 7 ‘Psalm’ waarin hij zijn stem verheft tegen de bezetter.
Na de oorlog verwierf hij als nationaal cultureel boegbeeld grote bekendheid en populariteit met zijn symfonische werken. Slechts aan het eind van zijn leven ontstaat de wens om kamermuziek en andere intiemere werken te schrijven.

'Ik ben geboren op een kerkhof', zei hij, en het is een feit dat de grond onder het huis waar hij werd geboren zowel een voormalig kerkhof was als een plaats van executie. Hij was ervan overtuigd dat de nachtmerries van zijn moeder hem zowel als persoon als componist hadden beïnvloed: "Mijn muziek is vreselijk melancholisch - wild melancholisch."
Naast zijn humor is zijn uniciteit als componist voelbaar. De Engelse dirigent Sir John Barbirolli zei: "Of je Sæverud's muziek nu leuk vindt of niet, er is nooit twijfel over wie het heeft geschreven, en dit kan tegenwoordig worden gezegd over heel weinig componisten."
In deze elegie voor viool solo hoor je die melancholie in vol ornaat, maar daarbij ook de verwijzingen naar de ruige Noorse natuur en de verstildheid van het leven en de dood, wat de titel Elegy ook verraadt.
Ik zou dit werk eigenlijk op 16 augustus aanstaande in Kopenhagen uitvoeren tijdens het befaamde Tivoli Sommer Klassiks festival, maar door Corona nu exclusief op video voor u!

I think this concerto is super underrated. Sure, it might not be as difficult to learn compared to other violin concertos but this concerto still requires good practice and is difficult to master. Awesome interpretation.
