Stover CT2 Hit & Miss engine from an old shed - 1st start in decades!

I got several old hit and miss engines out of an old shed from a collector that has been collecting these for 50 years. This thing was dry and crusty, but with a little oil it started turning over freely. I cleaned and adjusted the points, installed a new condenser and then I had spark! In this video I just used starting fluid. Next up will be a fuel tank and it should be good to go on its own!

I got this hit and miss engine a few days ago and I just got it running. I made my own buzz coil from a 12 volt automotive coil, a condenser, a relay and a little bit of wire. It is trigger by the original breaker points run off the crankshaft. This engine came out of a local junkyard where it was in service many years ago. This is the first time it has run in decades! Here is the truck all put back together currently. The chassis and wheelbase are very long, and I am thinking about shortening the frame and wheelbase to better accommodate the wrecker boom and make it not so cumbersome. I am still looking for some tires and other accessories for it.

This 1933 Dodge Brothers tow truck was parted out about 10 years ago and sold off in pieces for someone to build a hot rod out of. This video is my journey of 3000 miles in four days traveling to multiple different farm properties all over Washington to find all the pieces to put this truck back together.

This 1933 Dodge Brothers 1 1/2 ton tow truck wrecker was parted out over 10 years ago and sold off in pieces. I was able to located the pieces scattered all over various farm properties and brought them back together. There will be multiple parts to this project starting with the journey to gather all of the parts, getting them home, and then putting it back together!

Back about 30-something years ago I did a similar system using a flyback transformer from an old CRT TV. I think it ran somewhere around 40 Khz. If ran for more than a few seconds continuously it would start melting the ground tab off the spark plugs.

For the context of the experiment. I was in first-year tech trades college and got to be friends with some of the guys in the auto tech classes and at some point, a discussion about how to keep a spark plug lit through the whole power stroke could be done. I came up with a circuit that used the points as the timing reference to turn the high-frequency oscillator circuit on and off as needed. By adjusting the dwell (open time of the points) the duration of degrees of crankshaft rotation during the power stroke it stayed on could be controlled. It was sort of crude but we found that it did improve how engines ran, especially two strokes that tend to have a naturally rough sputtery idle. I eventually made a more permanent prototype that I put in my 1952 International L110 pickup (the first vehicle I bought and paid for myself) and the box is still in it today!
