I'm a survivor. I've been in the ER and Intensive care once with septic shock and three more times with sepsis. After the first bout of septic shock I had to go through 11 days of in patient rehab. I had a blocked urinary tract due to enlarged prostate. It was so bad I could barely squeeze out any urine. I had a constant urge to go and I couldn't. I had scheduled a meeting with a urologist but the night before the meeting with the urologist, I came down with chills and a 103 degree fever. I went to urgent care and they sent me to the ER. By the time I got to the ER I couldn't walk. I don't remember anything until I woke up in the ICU . My medical records clearly show I was in septic shock. My kidneys were failing. I identify with all of the stories here. I had to relearn to walk. My cognition was tested. I was catheterized. I never had breathing problems or heart problems. It has been a little over 2 years since I was in septic shock. I go to work every day. I just get tired after four hours when I work outside. I'm 71. I have no plans to retire or quit working. I've changed my diet and some personal hygiene habits . I'm drinking more water. I'm doing what I can to stay well . I discovered I have stage IV prostate cancer, but I'm living with it. I'm not scared. It is what it is. While death is a certain reality, my faith in Jesus Christ keeps things in perspective. It is appointed to man once to die and after death the judgment. I can't thwart that reality.

I developed sepsis last October 4 days after abdominal surgery. I was having trouble breathing and I felt like I was freezing....my breathing was so bad ,my husband practically carry me to the bathroom. We called 911, and when the EMT's took my BP was 90/40 and my pulse/ox was 79. They put me on Bi pap. When I arrived in the ER, there were 4 doctors and several nurses waiting for me...those nurses were really great. They started IV' s and took my blood very efficient. About 30 min later, I was diagnosed with sepsis. My heart was failing, my kidneys were shutting down, my blood sugar was 700 and had 900 ml of fluid in my chest cavity. I was admitted to the ICU until my conditioned stabilized, then was moved to a regular med/surg unit....I was discharged 15 days later and have felt fine ever since

I know two people who had sepsis. My mom got it from a huge kidney stone and luckily got the sepsis treated in time she is alive. My brother hurt his hand and they stitched it incorrectly and he got an infection and was told to come back in 6 weeks after finishing the antibiotics. My brother did not and ended up in septic shock and was in the hospital for two months

I know this video is old but im a survivor of sepsis and septic shock. I got really really sick in jan of this year(2023) and was diagnosed with strep and pneumonia at our local emergent care(similar to your a&e but not at the same time) i couldn't stay awake and was so cold but burning up at the same time. I now say I wished i didn't wake up enough for them to send me home(my nurse and dr said that they would have to keep me if I didnt wake up enough for me to go home) but i ended up going home. The next night shooting pain started in my left leg and it hurt to move it. Finally that pain went away(so i had thought) and pain in my left hand started and my left hand started to swell. I just thought maybe it was my body reacting to the weather because i have arthritis all throughout my body and it was the middle of winter. It wasnt untill my dog started sniffing and crying at me and where i was in a lot of pain and i couldnt stay awake that i knew something was really wrong. It took my pup running to the door when my hubby got home for two days that i said i need to go back to emergant care something is really wrong. I couldn't walk because i couldn't use my leg so my hubby had to carry me to the car and ran in when we got there(5 mins away from where we live) to grab a wheelchair. When the trioge nurse saw me she got me right into a room and they did more test on me and xrays and stuff and put an iv in my hand to give me fluids and start a strong med and some pain meds to try and stop my pain. I was their till like 8pm and they called the local hospital and had an ambulance come to transfer me. I remember crying in pain so much because they had my leg straight and strapped down and i needed it in a diffrent position. I was in the emergency foom till the next morning. They were going to put me in the bay area because the rooms were already all full but they pulled someone out and cleaned that room and put me in it. I looked like death and the person they pulled out of the room saw me and said she definitely needs the room shes sicker then i am. I had emergency surgery the next day on my left hand and hip. I had cellulitis in my hand and my hip had a raging infection in it so they scraped it all out. I was in hospital for a month and got out in feb of 2023. I had to learn to walk again and am still learning what i can and cant do with my hand as its still not able to move like it should. I went back to work a month and a half later and work was so good to me not letting me pick up anything heavy or put me in a postion that may have been to challenging for me because i was walking with a horrible limp still since i had just stopped using the walker to get around with. I remember the pca that was with me on intake saw me right before i left hospital and she was so so happy i was feeling better and healthy. She told me she took one look at me and felt so bad for my hubby and 3 kids because i looked likd death and she wasnt sure if i was going to make it and said she had put me on her prayer list and was praying for me every night(she was able to check how I was doing from the other nurses that had me. I was on the older people floor inatead of the icu because icu was full and i could get constat care on that floor. A week before i left they put a PICC line in my upper right arm so i could get the meds i needed faster and was sent home with all 3 meds that i needed for me for my husband to give me once a day and a home nurse that came in to change the dressings on it once a week and do my vitals. I remember some of what happened now better then i used to All i know is my pup saved me. If i hadnt gone in the day i did i would not be here typing this today. Im scared that if i get sick again i will have a second round of sepsis and im afraid if i do get it again i wont make it this time. Im only 41 and want to see my kids graduate(my oldest is a senior(12th grade) this year then I have an 8th grader and a 6th grader they need their momma.

My father defeated first sepsis but could survive the second sepsis attack. He passed away on 29th may this year. He was a simple and jovial person. He would always tell me that he wanted to live a long life. He used to play with my 2 years old daughter and they would share candies and all. Now that he is gone my daughter misses her grandpa badly. Sometime I wake up in the middle of the night and cry, sometime I blame God for all the suffering he gave my father. I feel so low and helpless without him.

I have a vary similar story, I had Klebsiella Sepsis for about 10 hours I could have gone either way. I remember when they diagnosed Me, I said Fight you have too many people depending on you. So I fought and here I am 6 months later well enough to go back to my career. We are blessed to be here!

I had blood clot in mysentary artery - the one that keeps interstines up and running. Was in coma, had 10 surgeries in 13 days. In hospital a month, then two months in rehab. For a year I received all my nutrition via IV, hooked up for 16 hours a day. Nothing by mouth. Right. That went right out the window as soon as I got home. I remember being so weak that I was unable to walk by myself with walker., couldn't pick up a pencil to learn to write my name again. I think it was harder for other people than it was for me since I wasn't there for most of it, being comatose. The hardest part for me was that the two people who were supposed to help me get in the swing of being an invalid back at home got sick themselves and both had to go to hospital. It's a curse! I didn't have any life changing realizations but nor would I have expected to. I'm not a reflective person. It's live, work, die. If you're lucky you'll get some good meals along the way.

  • @verabeatrizraposodeabreu5171

I had septic shock. 3 weeks in induced coma, intubated, in ICU. All organs shutting down. It was E. coli in the digestive tract that went to the blood and spread all over my body. There are 3 grades of sepsis. Mine was the worst (septic shock).

Interesting story. It is astonishing how fast sepsis comes on and shocking how it can rapidly lead to terrible or fatal consequences. I have had neutropaenic sepsis and bacterial sepsis twice - most recently just after the New Year and despite the covid problems an ambulance was with me within 40 minutes and was on intravenous antibiotics within an hour. Saved my life.

I had the misfortune of going to hospital just as the fear of covid was really catching on. They were so convinced I had it that they tested me 4 times - all negative - and one negative antibody test. I had the classic symptoms of sepsis but no one was talking to me in these terms. I presented with pneumonia and lesions on my liver. I had a strep infection of my blood. Three days intubated and I nearly died the 2nd. 3 weeks in hospital and I'm still on at home IV antibiotics.

I had sepsis and pneumonia last year in October, and ended up in ICU and after that spent a further 5 weeks in hospital, I had a line in my groin, I had picc lines, what I didn't know was that I had actually collapsed at home and was unresponsive, and if it hadn't been for my partner coming in when he did, I wouldn't be here right now, I start going to ICU this month for appointments, so let's see what happens when these appointments start and what they are about, I just wonder what kind of damage has happened, because I also had ecoli in my blood, and other things, so I know how you feel x

My dad had septic shock, he had a cut on his foot, and got treated with antibiotics for about 2 months, it wasn’t working and his foot wasn’t healing. One day he ended up becoming increasingly unwell to the point where his speech was slurred, temperature was sky high and his hands and feet started to go blue, he was rushed to the hospital. Before it got that bad I had mentioned to my Mum and dad that he had better go up to the hospital because if he didn’t he was going to end up with sepsis. To which they called the doctor and the doctor said he had the flu. Sadly when my dad was rushed into hospital his leg had to be amputated and had to spend 2 months in intensive care as the sepsis had done significant damage to his organs. I feel as if this could of been avoided as any doctor should know if antibiotics aren’t working try another type of antibiotics and try it with an IV. but here we are a year on and he survived and is doing well. He has long term side effects from the septic shock but that’s to be expected! It was interesting hearing your story!
