Diving the Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon - Part I
zhlédnutí 119KPřed 12 lety
Part I of our incredible adventure of diving the shipwrecks of Truk Lagoon, all sunk in 1944 in Operation Hailstone; thus 68 years underwater. These wrecks - including a submarine and Betty Bomber - each carry their own remarkable story, and within their holds and engine rooms the remarkable collection of the tools of War: Zero fighter aircraft, battle tanks, vehicles, trucks, and munitions & o...

Dove the Fujiwara Maru, believe I found a skull on there. The officers mess still had plates and cups in storage storage racks storage
How deep. I see a single tank how much bottom time?
Excellent work thanks.
I spent a week at Truuk in 2007. Except for Bikini, the best dive vacation ever.
Great video. Inspired to go there and dive myself now. Quick question for non native English speaker, what is "LOA" an abbreviation for?
Brings back a lot of good memories, sailing with your dad. 😊💖
Sorry but where has respect for the war dead gone? Once people had respect for these sunken tombs, they would look outside but not go in so as to not disturb the war dead, now it’s a free for all all so it can get likes on the internet. You’d think that the Americans would know better because of how they are with pearl harbour.
Checking back in after a whole 6 years! Still love the video Sir. ^_^
I'M IMPRESSED WITH THIS VIDEO. ..A LOT OF MONEY LAYING ON THE BOTTOM OF TRUK LAGOON!!
Popular strategic location. Wrecks from WW2 literally laying on top of wrecks from WW1.
A very popular place. Truk has shipwrecks from WW2 laying directly on top of shipwrecks from WW1.
Fantastic and moving footage. Appreciate the explanatory captions too. Thank you.
Thanks James, appreciate your comment!
AWSOME video
Thank you Sean!
You think man would learnt,,, nope
👌🏻how they don’t block the music ?
Why do people feel the need to ruin a perfectly good video with head banging music?
David, if you listen further into both videos, it reverts to mostly classical pieces. When I made this back in 20212 (?) I felt it needed something with pace to begin the video :)
What a great video I can't believe how clear it is. It has been said by many drivers who drive trucks Lagoon that at certain times you can hear what they say is the truck engines running. There are no boats running on the surface no engines running anywhere but the divers can hear engines running. And they say it sounds like truck engines
Thank you JB! You never know, this lagoon holds a LOT of secrets!
@@philblake3765 Even Josh Gates of Destination Truth when he was doing a show there he was diving and the film crew and Josh could hear a truck engine running. Cheers
A really nice quality video. Thanks for sharing it.
You're welcome Ron - thanks for the feedback!
that was rather selfish to carve a birthday message into a war grave.
Hi Floyd, no carving took place - the ship's dockmaster spelt out this birthday message using actual bullet shells arrayed out on this beam.
Hi Phil, sorry if this is out of the blue but Im guessing you are related to Cpt Warren Blake. How is he doing now? Hope all is well. I sailed under him a few years back.
Wait are those real bones?
Yes, M M. All of these wrecks are war graves from WWII.
Good filming bloody awful inappropriate music ffs.
Sorry you didn't like SAIL by AWOL, Grenville. It's a bit of marmite song, but definitely elicits feedback! If you watched on, you'd hear classical music throughout the rest of the video(s). I wanted something upbeat for the opening, and don't regret using SAIL! Appreciate the good filming comment, nevertheless.
Overhead environment and no reel, you must feel immortal
Peter, virtually all of our diving on this trip was in overhead environments. Not for the faint hearted for sure, but for the more challenging wrecks we had an experienced divemaster leading through the innards of these shipwrecks. A reel in these environments would simply become horribly entangled, and risk other divers.
Nice footage... shame about the horrid soundtrack.
I'm a relatively fresh diver, prob around 70 dives and nothing deeper than 30ms is it possible to see as much at that sort of skill level? Dream to come here at least once
Hi Jimmy, if you check in with the liveaboard that we dived with (Odyssey Adventures), their stance at the time was Open Water divers were OK to join these trips; and it was the course directors who were the most dangerous divers! I'd venture you get some experience in overhead environments, and be comfortable being deep inside wrecks. You'd also need to do your Nitrox course, to come on this trip as 100% of the diving is with nitrox / enriched air.
@@philblake3765 Cheers mate, thanks for the info!
How disgraceful to use a war grave site as a photo op to wish someone a happy birthday.
Philip, that was actually the divemaster of the liveaboard who assembled that birthday greeting, using ammunition that was strewn around everywhere on that particular wreck. I thought it was quite a sweet gesture for my dive buddy, sorry you were offended, but pleased that you watched well into the video :)
Viewing the wreckage is very interesting but I cannot help but remember that these ships were once the home and place of work of those who ,manned these ships, that their footsteps on the decks still, somehow, echo to this very day. May all who rest in the deep rest in peace.
The under water shots amazing but that church music dont go
A little quality narration would be good instead of that annoying racket which you probably call music.
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Amazing Truk lagoon. Wreck diving in world...
The music dosent suit this vid . I want the silence that would be there ...
Fair point Valentino, but i trust the classical pieces after the opening Sail music suited the subject.
I remember the 1970’s Jacques Cousteau doc at Truk - when they found remains and a skull: “an zen we saw a veesion of deeth”.
Awesome video Phil really enjoyed the music to especially at the beginning and at 11:00 wicked violin playing I saw Pt2 first I'm going to have to check out your videos Cheers
Cheers JB!
One of the best video I have seen on Truk Lagoon but there is one big complaint and problem it's to short it needs to be much longer😉😉😉
JB Robertson cheers JB! Appreciate your comment :-)
@@philblake3765 I can't believe the clarity and quality in the video great job and you showed things that I have never seen before. The film quality is even better than Josh Gate's video when he was there. I have a question first off I am a big fan of the Paranormal I was wondering if you guys saw or felt anything well you know off the wall it's reported even by Josh that he could hear engines running he like a truck or tractor running when they were deep in their dive. I'm just asking. I also Subscribed. Cheers
Really a mind boggling amount of materials, just wasted by war. Incredible footage.
Cody King indeed - mind boggling is a good description! Years later and I’m still talking about this trip as the most incredible diving I have done, and I started diving at five years old (that’s another story).
8:04 reversed footage, fish swimming backwards
Cody King well spotted ;-) Thought the scene made better sense in reverse.
@@philblake3765 Had me trippin' out at first, man. I was like wow, they're swimming backwards. Wait, ALL of them are swimming backwards!
Really nice music and video.
Thumbs down for stupid music.
Charlie the Tuna keep watching until after Sail. I don’t think you’d object to the music after sail ;-)
Ive seen video of ships down there still brimming with un exploded bombs.
Michael, virtually every wreck was teeming with live ordinance. It certainly encourages you to keep your limbs and gear tucked in and not untidy :)
Thanks! Guys that was awesome!
This is such a cool video! I loved how you put in subtitles cause I didn’t always understand what I was seeing. The engine room bit made even me anxious!
Jesse McIver thank you for the feedback!
Ghost Fleet? Are you trying to be funny? You missed the mark. Why don't you call it the Casper the friendly ghost fleet?
456swagger - In 1969, William A. Brown and French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and his team explored Truk Lagoon. Following Cousteau's 1971 television documentary about the lagoon and its ghostly remains, the place became a scuba diving paradise, drawing wreck diving enthusiasts from around the world to see its numerous, virtually intact sunken ships. The shipwrecks and remains are sometimes referred to as the "Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon". en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuuk_Lagoon#/media/File%3ATruk_Lagoon.png
1:32 I think that's actually an A5M Claude
Sir Boomsalot, good spot, but of the four aircraft, three are Zeros, and one is. Claude. “Amongst the more striking features on the wreck are four disassembled Mitsubishi fighter aircraft in one of the forward holds. Three of the aircraft are A6M Zeros and the fourth is an A5M Claude, the sole known survivor of the type.”
wait who died the scuba diver?
Shower Ferriol no, the Japanese sailors aboard their respective ships died when their ships were sunk in WWII. However, aboard the submarine, yes, a diver perished as he entered the engine room and became disorientated.
