It's my favorite VH album. It's melodic, creative, interesting, humorous and inventive. Oh, it has balls out rockers too. Surprises around every corner from Roth's opening yelp through to his playful break with laughter in Happy Trails.

Hang em High, The Full Bug, Little Guitars, Intruder, Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Secrets, Big Bad Bill... this album rocks. It's too difficult to rank their first 6 albums other than VHI will always be at the top of the list of 1984 at the bottom... and 1984 is still a great album. IMO VHI is the best rock album of all time, and I'll scoff at anyone who tries to tell me otherwise. Ed was such a master songwriter. And yep they were also the best cover band in history. Long live King Edward!

Fair Warning didn't aell well and was a darker record but great.

Diver Down is epic. They always did covers. Happy trails was good. Its the end of the record. They're saying goodbye and singing acapella.

It is not bad, but it is the worst Roth era album, by far.

The album is brilliant, and "Happy trails" is a work of art. You know, such a big act as they were at the time, coming out with an album so jolly and childish was proof of greatness. They feared no criticism and ran the stadiums. "Secrets" and "Little guitars" are killer songs, among my top 10 VH tunes, and mr. Van Halen's cameo in Big Bad Bill is unforgettable, with Ed playing chords most rockers wouldn't even know how to find on the neck. An "indestructible" album!

I dig the covers remade in VH style...Secrets and lil guitars rock!!!! Never knew why so many reviews didn't give Diver more praise. Thanks for great review and affirmation!!!

The first 30 seconds of this video???... Diver Down is one of my all time favorite albums. If I had to be on a desert island with only three albums to listen to for the rest of my life it would be Diver Down, Pink Floyd Animals, Pat Benatar Crimes of Passion.

My dad LOVES this album. As for me, overall I like their debut the best, but Little guitars and Hang em high are maybe my favourite VH tracks of all time along with Ain't talkin bout love (from debut ofc). I also really like Secrets very much!

Diver Down is just as iconic as any of the original 6 as far as I'm concerned. WaCF and FW are kickass records, but they're kinda dark. Diver Down was a return to a more fun and summertime type of album, not too different from VH2.

I actually like Diver Down more than 1984. Secrets is my favorite song off D/D👍

It's the perfect companion piece to the discography which emanates balance within their global sound! I love Happy Trails! And people went nuts everytime they executed it perfectly live! This album was the precursor to them going global with 1984 then all of the number one albums with Sammy! It Rocks! Period!

Little Guitars is literally the song that epitomizes the Magic of EVH & D-RO!! It burned Ed's ass, but they were the American Page & Plant. Maybe Joe Perry was right--maybe you don't have to be friends with someone to be in a band with them❤

I'm sorry this is weakest album of David Lee Roth era, but Intruder kicks some major ass!

Van Halen were a band that released good album, bad album, repeat… The only exception was Women and Children First followed by Far Warning. The bad albums start back up with Diver Down followed by good album, 1984.

All six original VH albums rule! Secrets is a top five VH tune for me.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Every time you say "yeah, but" you're admitting it sucks. Dildo Dave was a cover squealer. Sounds so unpolished, which isn't ALWAYS bad. But in this case..... this was a waste of money. Although, Pretty Woman does kick proverbial A$$

It's a nice review. I do agree that CoS is one of their most important albums. And I agree that it was great that they doubled-down on what they wanted to do. I find CoS to be a pretty good album with a couple of truly great songs (Lakeside Park and Bastille Day). I think it gave them the experience they needed to move up from being a really good band making good albums, to being an A-List band writing classic albums! 2112 through Moving Pictures are in a whole different league, and they never could have done that without the experience from CoS.

1. Rolling Stone sucks and always has. 2. You need better friends. DIVER DOWN is a fun as fuck listen start to finish.

The girl in the fire place story ended all respect I once had for this band.
