There have been many misconceptions regarding the cultural identity of the Okun people. This is a result of inadequate historical documentation of the Okun people.
Many people believe that the Okuns are not "true" Yoruba, and in some regions of Nigeria, particularly the North, they are seen as Northerners who have no ties to the "core" Yoruba in Southwestern Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.
On the basis of languages and oral traditions, this video seeks to showcase the Yoruba ancestry of the Okun people.

We have a Ebira clan called Omoye who trace their origin to Okuns through their maternal side!! There are other cultural affiliations between the 2 tribes. For instance, The most revered Shroud to bury our most revered deceased Elders & for our chief masquerades are from Okuns!!! More blessings to the Okuns
@shaibusezuo5560 What part of Ebira is this?
@@MayowaBlades The Ebira Taoo( Ebira Opete) This Omoyee Clan are predomnantly in Okene Local Government area of Kogi State A very Musically Talented Clan
@@MayowaBlades There is a very revered great Ebira Masqurade called Anaogidi ( meaning the One from Ogidi Environ ) This great Masqurade traces it's origin also to Okun!!! U can research further on this Sir , & U would definately be surprised at the extent of Okun cultural Influence on the Ebiras More Blessings to U Sir Greetings from Germany

Proudly from okebukun kabba kogi state ❤
The 1st water i drank coming to life was ìn Lokoja. My maternal family are from Ayere, Ijumu. It is funny how they have a different language but still speak and understand yoruba very well. They bear yoruba names and have the culture.
I miss aadu.
We need to remove the North fr9m the Central. And just maintain "Central Nigeria" or use "South West Central Nigeria" as long as the North is out pls 🙏
Love this documentary, thank you for this Proudly omo okun
I am blessed ❤ proud okun
A fantastic documentary. Well put together, beautifully filmed. Thank you!
Thank you
Okun people are partly Yoruba
the same way you're partly Nigerian.
Which one is partly Yoruba again? 😂 Okun people are pure Yoruba people just like Ekiti, Ondo, OYO, osun, Ogun, Eko and the Yoruba of Kwara. Don’t let Balkanization confuse you.
Am from osun State got married to okun man, am so happy and blessed
I'm half Okun via my Mum. I so badly want to change my state of origin as I have more affinity for them than my other side in Osun state.
Hehehe we take you as one of us. You're Okun.. come take your itoho lol
Im happy watching my people. I’m from Kabba, but I didn’t grow up there, my first there I was 5 and another time I was 29, and 30. I also visited the Obaro’s palace to visit the queen. Anytime my dad travels he always buys us itoho and I also love adun it is always stored in a tin(Milo or bounvita). I also have friends in isunlu and I always love to go with them to their village anytime I’m off from college and it was fun.
Most be nostalgic! Adun is a must have those days. Happy to hear your story. Check out a new video on Sam channel, you might learn a few things
I'm anago subgroup of Yórúbà people in Benin republic, am proudly Yorùbá from Porto Novo in Bénin republic 🇧🇯, we really appreciate your efforts for showcasing this beautiful people. Omo odu'a, àwa lọmọ luabi, i wish I can visit ule ife, òsun, ìbàdàn and òyó town...The great òyó empire 💪🇳🇬🇧🇯🇬🇼, big up to our Yorùbá Brothers in kogi state and northern part of Togo land🇹🇬.
Oh this is lovely to hear. I will find time to document you guys someday. I have heard so much about you guys. It will be great that the Ooni of Ife create a world Yoruba forum in Ide where yoruba from eveeyewhere can converge to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
I wish to connect with you. This is really great 👍 ❤
Thank you so much 🤗

Great content. It is about time Africans tell our own story through our instruments and music. Congratulations Mayowa‼️✊🏿
It was great to have you tell your story on the Alsalatua(Kas Las) Instrument. You did greatly.

Lovely piece all together 🔥
Thanks
Great Job, and very detailed ❤, keep it up.
Thanks for watching.
Wow what a beautiful storytelling. Africa is truly beautiful. I particularly like the Algaitar Instrument among all. The Japanese have something similar but can't remember the name. Great documentary!
Not sure if it's Japanese but the Chinese have a double reed instrument similar. Thanks for watching.
It's high time for the Yoruba's to come together. I love this documentary, though I'm not from Okun but a Yoruba man.
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe:)
Kudos to you. But needs to hear other tongues in okunland. Oworo, Bunu, kirii, Gbede and others
I love this documentary and I'm proud of my origin as a Yoruba man
Glad you liked it. Don't forget to extend the reach by sharing the video with others too. Warm regards John
I understand all dialecte
Beautiful. You're from where?
I think the okun people first settle in ijebu land before they continued their journey and finally settled in kabba . They are literally speaking ijebu language which is my language .
Given the close similarities between the two dialects ,one can't rule that out.
It’s because what they speak now is very close to what they originally spoke in Ile Ife thousands of years ago. Eastern Yoruba land, especially Ondo, Ekiti has been found to speak something close to what they spoke in Ile Ife during the time of Oduduwa and Obatala.
It’s with pride and joy I watch this video with Africa and her people at there best. It’s time to go back to our ancestral traditions. Love it
Thank you. More intriguing African stories to come soon. Thanks for watching.
Very modest and dependable people. Love them.
That's beautiful. You once lived there?
Schooled with them in the North long ago.
This is a well made documentary. I was born and bred in Yagba land and I've been yearning to hear other parts of Okun speak to know how it varied with Yagba dialect. This documentary did justice to that. I never knew Ijumu dialects are similar to Yagba dialects. I perfectly understood. Even Kabba dialect I understood, I thought it would be very different from Yagba own. Thanks for this. Hearing the dialects made me nostalgic. 😪😪
Thanks very much for taking your time to watch and also note some important observations. Glad you enjoyed it. Keep sharing with others.Cheers.
Thank you for sharing this memory experience with very informative information about okun land.
My pleasure. And thanks for watching.
I love this. Please keep it up. Kudos!
