Is it possible to have too many guitars, amps, and effects pedals? In other words, can you have too much gear? We are not even sure why someone would think that! We love to try out gear and chat about it. Apparently starting a CZcams channel is an awesome way to make this happen. It has also allowed us to try out some really excellent new gear and meet some great people. Anyone from everyday players like ourselves to industry leaders. All of which we get to share on our channel. So if you like videos on guitar-related gear, livestream conversations, interviews with players and manufacturers, or deep dives into specific effects like our That Leslie Sound and Tremolo series please subscribe and join us on the journey. We typically release new videos twice a week. Every Saturday at noon and sometime on Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by...

In this episode, we check out the JHS Unicorn V2 Uni-Vibe/Vibrato pedal. The Unicorn is bursting with all the lush and washy pulsations that changed what the electric guitar could sound like in the 1960s. And this is no digital emulation. The Unicorn sports the real-deal, analog photocell topology of the original units.

What song are you playing? Or is that just a jam? You guys sound great.
It’s a loose adaptation of a Sunday morning song. Around minute 2:24…. czcams.com/video/rb9PZxb9T9g/video.htmlsi=UNu-AmHWguzGbv3j
What are your preferences re: Uni-vibe vs. Phaser or some other modulation? For me, listening to a song with a uni-vibe sound is more enjoyable than playing a uni-vibe. I tend to lean toward phaser (especially if I have a wah or an envelope filter in the chain, as well).
I am pretty sure PJ would say tremolo is his preferred modulation. Maybe followed by chorus. A while back I added a line 6 M5 to my effects loop. Somehow I landed on a phaser on that pedal and absolutely love it. You’ll probably see a phaser rabbit hole sooner or later on the channel. Univibe was my preferred when I was gigging with a blues based jam band years ago. That board had a voodoo labs microvibe on it. We recorded that pedal already and it will be released sooner or later. Now I love the rotary thing and don’t put a board together without some kind of leslie pedal! This series is rekindling my love of the univibe though.
Great pedal!
Indeed!
Great demo guys. I agree with your final thoughts. Like any guitar, I’d still want to play one first. Are these sold in stores or are they only available online? That’s not a bad price for what seems like a decent electric guitar. I have a request for a guitar to demo. I would love to hear what you guys think of the Wolfgang Van Halen EVH SA-126.
I don’t know whether they are sold in stores or not. My guess is that they are somewhere. We got this one from zZounds. I will have to see if they have the EVH guitar. Not sure we could do that one justice though.
Sweet🎸
Thanks
Love you breaking out the Grateful Dead riffs!
Once in a while you get shown the light…
but locking tuners do improve tuning stability. I tried them on my first tremolo guitar and it worked tried it on more and I was sold I put them on all 20 guitars including my gibson's
I guess the locking tuners could be better than what was on there in the first place. Especially if they have a higher gear ratio. That could help with accuracy too They definitely make it easier to change strings as well. A sloppy wrap job could affect tuning stability by letting the strings slip around the post when bending and playing. You’re probably correct, but often times it is a host of other things that could be causing more problems.
Guys guys guys, this is a copy of a Sansamp, the updated version of the Classic model used by Cobain, Tech21 GT2. The Sansamp manual would serve better as well as Sansamp gurus on the tube. Its not much of a d.i., better preamp
I could see it working as a better preamp. Thanks
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Hey dudes! Great stuff. I’m looking to pick one of these up in my local area. Where would you recommend this go in my pedal chain?
I normally put it after the drives and before delay and reverb. I do use my H@K Rotosphere in the effects loop of an amp too so that is an option. Most of the time I put it in front of the amp where I said in the beginning. Even though you can add drive with the Lex, I like using it with the drive pedal on my board going into it.
The guitar looks more green to me than Turquoise.
I’d say turquoise in person, at least to my eyes
hey guys, maybe you could demo Fredric Effects West Berlin? It's based off Schaller TR-68, same as Tremodillo and consequentially Chicken Quiff. Would be interesting to hear what you think.
Awesome closing jam lads 👏....you two should start a CZcams channel
Thanks! It’s a good idea but I hear it’s a lot of work… :)
You guys sold me on this pedal. Thanks Dan and Mick. Oops sorry wrong thumb nail😊
Beard here… you’re welcome. This pedal is fantastic!
Please compare the se nf3 vs the se dgt.
We did do a video on our DGT before we swapped out the pickups. Having change out the pickups on it I am not sure we can do a fair one to one now. The David Grissom SE DGT Signature Model from PRS Guitars - Welcome to the Channel czcams.com/video/J0wJuk8MKa0/video.html
which wraparound bridge is intonable for this Paul's guitar?
One with individual string saddles? I think they are available but I am not sure by who and which one. Check with the PRS owners group on Facebook. I’m sure someone in there knows.
do you guys use it in the FX loop or in front?
I think we both run tremolos in front of the amp. Normally after drives and before delay and reverb.
What our the pedals at the very bottom of the board Beside the box
A barber electronics direct drive, wampler tape echo, and a walrus audio slo.
Someone can help me with this pedal? I want a clean boost to put in the final place of my pedalboard because I use a Zoom G1XFour to emulate amplifiers and effects of my guitar and so I run into a DI. Did someone knows if this pedal will druve the DI? Because i've bought a kokko booster pedal and it conpletely drived the final signal to my headphones and DI
Not our area of expertise but I assume if you put it at the end of your chain it will drive the DI. I could be wrong but I think any boost would do that.
Might be the first plate reverb algo Ive ever liked
Any digital reverb seems hard to get right.
What was the third riff..catchy as he'll. Is it from something?
I think it is a variation of Desert Song which always sounded a lot like All Along the Watchtower to me!
Late to the party, my bad, but if you remember, is it notably hissy?
I don’t remember so probably not. Normally that is something that I would remember and that we would probably comment on in the video.
No offense. I have a VERY hard time digging any modulation that is not tremolo. I do enjoy a good phase shifter but I mostly play older blues so it’s not a sound that I really reach for. I have tried the déjà vu vibe. Makes a strange copying noise when you kick it into your system and sounds OK but doesn’t sound good enough to deserve a place on my pedalboard. I’ve also tried the dark side by Keeley. And if you could dial in all the sounds at once, it might be a keeper because you have to choose whether it’s a fair shift or or Your or Whatever. I’m used to about three times and then I’m gonna put on Reverb. I really haven’t heard anything that makes me want to have it on my paddleboard that makes me feel it deserves the space consider to be very very valuable real estate. It needs to be sated inspires me that takes me somewhere else And none of the shit does that. Certainly nothing you demo on this video. I’m very open to suggestion. I’ve been playing since I was 14 I’ll be 63 later this summer I’ve used a lot of shit I’ve played through the real Leslie speakers simply looking for great sounds and inspiration want stuff that’s easy to dial in and easy to use. Sounds good and every goddamn position you put it in not something that has like three or four spots and you better fucking pray you get it right. Quite frankly don’t have time for that.
If you want a great leslie sound in a small package check out one of the micro vents. I like the 122 because I like the high rotor, but the 16 is cool if you want more of that SRV thing. Even though it has one footswitch you can set it up to change from fast to slow with a click and go to bypass with a press and hold. If the neo stuff doesn’t work for you then you simply don’t like the he leslie sound. The Lex is also really good with a smallish footprint. These are completely different from the univibe stuff you mentioned. They are very different even though people often say the univibe was created to sound like a leslie. We are just diving into a univibe series. We have posted a bunch of videos on them already but have a lot more to go. This has been one of my favorites and it is really easy to dial in a good sound. czcams.com/video/3KQGEff5Uug/video.htmlsi=HO23ta8bU0tT_3Uz
Jacaranda...aka Brazilian rosewood
Thanks!
What do you guys think of the Boss Auto Wah, Dynamic Wah and Touch Wah? Any good to emulate Jerry Garcia stuff?
Sorry for the slow response. We haven’t tried the boss stuff yet to know. Well, we did shoot a video ages ago on a vintage boss tw-1. For some reason it never was released. I don’t know if it was the pedal we had but I found it really hard to get a good sound out of it. Especially the Jerry tone thing.
Just got one, hisses like a wind storm
Reverb and delay added on is a little distracting. Really just wanna hear the Soul Shiver dry. Maybe bring in other effects briefly, but that's about it.
Which do you recommend for Hendrix, the 16 or the 122?
I normally think univibe instead of leslie for Hendrix. SRV did use a leslie 16 cab for some of his stuff. Both the 16 and 122 are cool!
We started a univibes series recently if you are not that familiar with that effect. Check it out here: pjandthebeard.com/uni-vibes-series
Gibson for life❤❤❤❤
Don't think you would go wrong with either honestly speaking. But my personal choice would be the tagima for its warmer tone all the way around but someone might prefer the brighter characteristic of the Squier. But I'm sure tweaking of the amp settings and pedals would compensate either way.
You guys do a great job of taking a really structured organized approach to playing different features or modes, which really helps for comparison across pedals / videos in each series. What might be interesting is to also add a short segment near the end where each of you plays your favorite setup for the pedal, and then explain how you got there. Could be with or without expression, or even before or after other pedals (likely fuzz in this case), and could also involve a style of playing best suited to that setup. This would be especially good for this uni vibe series, to give us two different use cases. Sponsors would probably like it too since you'd be trying to show off each pedal at its best. Something to consider. Keep up the great videos guys!
Just got my UV yesterday. It will be the completion of my Strymon board! Guitar into UV, into Zelzah into Orbit into Sunset into Iridium into Sonicake Levitate 4 reverb and delay. It’s gonna be awesome 🫡 I called Strymon yesterday and suggested they make a small footprint Reverb/ Delay ala Keeley Caverns or Nux Atlantic! They would kick ass w some of their prime circuits. I don’t know why they haven’t done that yet 4 those who don’t want the huge real estate of their other reverb and delay pedals.
A small reverb and delay from them would be awesome. Sounds like a great board!
...Did we mention "chewy"?...That is VERY important...Thank you...
We need at add chewy to the univibes series vocabulary for sure!
...If it has the "lop-sided-throb',I'm cool with it...Sort-f a drunken-vibrato in a "fun-house" is the "Vibe" I want !!!....Peace...
Great description!
It would have been nice to compare the two guitars as they were purchased. But not really possible with after market pickups in the DGT.
They are completely different animals too. The NF3 would be closer to the silver sky but it’s even pretty different from that. It really seems to be its own thing.
Great review! This video convinced me to buy this so i can play tragedy's a comin' on my bass.
Nice! Hope you like it!
I really loved the guitars comparison and also both players. 👏🏼👏🏼 The Gib is better of course but not so much that better. I own the Epi and I love the guitar. The playability, confort and the overall quality of the Epi is amazing. ❤
Thanks. Appreciate it! Definitely agree on the epi!
5:41 now we're rockin
Thanks!
Got mine on Tuesday …… 100% on the buy …..
What color did you get?
Is it digital or analog?
Analog. DLS stuff is great!
I like to use 2n2218 or 2n2219 trannies in my Astro Tone. It adds a certain heft or unique quality that sounds great thru tube amps. Cleans up nice as well. 🤙
This is the first video I've ever seen from your channel. Within 28 seconds you got me to click the subscribe button based on how clear everything stated. Bravo. Continued success both of you.
Thanks and welcome. Appreciate it!
Wife found a solid black one at Sweetwater the other day! I need to crack it open and see if there are any notes in it. Can't find any other solid black ones, just ones with black knobs. Maybe it was just a custom color variation but I'm super curious if it was modded in any other way. Sounds so so good
I asked Dave and here was his response… “We have made the exacta in black, if there’s no indication inside, it’s likely a triangle, usually the ram says ram”
Great video! Did you guys notice the FAT switch on the Series 3 is just about useless?
Hmm… I don’t remember it being useless, but I don’t recall what it did so… :)
I believe the 1st overdrive I bought was an LPB-1, but it plugged directly into my amp input. It was not a pedal. It was a box with a male jack.
That sounds like an original. Pretty cool!
My reverb is from the amp, so it has to be before the tremolo!
Wouldn’t that put it after the tremolo of you are using a pedal? Or am I thinking about this wrong.
@@PJandtheBeard Oh wait, you're right - I had it backwards!
Based on the sound here... Nope.
Honestly, that is kind of how I felt when I first plugged into it, but after changing my approach to the amp I have changed my mind.
It's a great sounding pedal that I used for a couple years. The single issue that I found was that the boost could be too much combined with other Drive or clipping effects.Awesome throb and beautiful mids , but I prefer more glassy high end; in other words, now I think about it, the same reason that I don't use Supro amps.Too much of qualities that can't be dialed back. .
Interesting. I have always wanted to try the supro with 2 ten inch speakers but have never had the opportunity.
Man, - to be born in these times when effects like this can be obtained used for under $100; it's probably not among the best available, but it still could be a inspiring ,distinctive and useful tool. On the other hand, the only way you can survive as a musician now is to play endless live shows and shill merch. Doesn't seem like a great trade.
I don’t know. The keeley stuff always seems to stand up well to everything else regardless of the price. The get what you are saying, can’t imagine trying to survive strictly as a musician. It’s a hard road even for the most talented musicians.
Great Video Guys. I bought the Drybell Vibe Machine pedal 5 months ago. The Pedal is phenomenal. Just ordered the NF3 in the same color you have. We shall see how good it is.
The Drybell is great! Looking forward to adding that to our univibes series. Hope you enjoy the NF3! It is definitely its own thing.
