    The Mantle was a big one for me when it came out and it's the one I return to from Agalloch. As you mention in the interview, time and place was important- I was 19 or 20 and starting to dive more into the underground. There's no denying they tapped into something timeless with that album, and Tom an extent they did that across all of their albums. They area playing in Melbourne in a week or two and I'd like to hit it but I'm not sure if I'll be able to. I might have to see if I can swing it..... cool interview.

    I must ask. What is the difference between tape trading and burning music in the early 2000s? Neither of it was bought but did bring more people to their shows.

    • @AlanAverillNemtheanga
      @AlanAverillNemtheanga Před 8 dny

      well because back in the 80s, early 90s you were mainly trading demos/rehearsals and live tapes, buying some as well but without the trading underground bands like Morbid Angel or Immolation would not have had the sales they did when the albums came out, because most of us bought the albums.....of course I had copies of some albums but I bought what I could, the difference between that and trading files I think is pretty clear, most file traders didn't buy physical copy. Apart from the fact that I took hours drawing logos on the cassettes, taking time with the presentation and writing letters, making a fanzine etc. You were still engaged with a physical object......and I think therefore not desensitised to the ultimately reductive and frankly disrespectful process of file trading, in terms of respecting art!!!

  • @Aibric
    @Aibric Před 24 dny

    Even though it's the album a lot of "hipsters" caught on to the band and so I think a lot of older fans knee jerk against it, Ashes Against the Grain is the band's high water mark in my opinion. I first came across Sculptured and Agalloch via the old Unholy Metal chatroom on AOL back in the 90's, which I sent way too much time in trying to find new underground bands. One of the guys would pop in from time to time and post those real short, lossy sound files. It's been pretty wild over the years to see how big (in a relative sense) Agalloch became. Also their cover of Kneel to the Cross also got me into neofolk and other related/tangential shit like The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, some of Boyd Rice's shit and so on.

  • @mitchhutchens9573
    @mitchhutchens9573 Před 24 dny

    Idk, Timing is everything. The computer, CZcams, burning music. ( double edged sword) is what got me into Primordial and Agalloch in the early 2000s. Where I live you wouldn’t find their music at no music stores. I think that is why European bands like Rotting Christ can come to States and do better. The word is out and to listen to their stuff is a no risk just reward process.

    • @AlanAverillNemtheanga
      @AlanAverillNemtheanga Před 23 dny

      no risk just reward....interesting, can you expand on what you mean? just that someone can stream the albums easily and then find Rotting C playing somewhere in a 3 hour radius once a year and more easily become 'active' rather than 'passive'?

    • @mitchhutchens9573
      @mitchhutchens9573 Před 23 dny

      Must admit, kind of geeking right now. To the Nameless Dead is an art piece. Only hit play. No risk = I didnt have to risk 10 dollars on an album I don’t know anything about. Or a U.S. band that I love that didn’t thank the band in their album sleeve. I could listen to a song or two and if it caught my fancy I dig deeper. I think many people were like that. Especially, during the computer age. Rotting Christ for example: They came out with Genesis when I first heard them . I liked Quintessence and had to spend no money to know they were the sheooot. I go back to Thy Mighty Contract which is one my favorite Black Metal/ ish. albums of all time. It is a classic. Hearing just that record is enough to get me to one of their shows.

    Glad Agalloch broke up because we would have never got “Salt” by Khorada (best thing they ever did) as well as the New Sculptured album “The Liminal Phase” (Please, Release the new album your sitting on with Hunter Ginn)... Agalloch are good enough but Khorada & Sculptured are Brilliant (click with my aesthetic infinitely more)

  • @plotless7436
    @plotless7436 Před 25 dny

    I'm 30 and what Jason says about The Mantle is definitely on the note for me, however, I sadly didn't discover Primordial until ~2017, and To The Nameless Dead is still my favorite album by y'all. There's just something truly special about the pacing of that album. Getting to see Agalloch in Denver post-reunion was a crazy experience. A ton of people were there from all over the place because we were convinced they would break up again immediately. The level of comradery in the pit was special. To your point on "peaking": If I were in your position and had created a body of work that truly resonates with people, even if that's a smaller group of people, I would be ecstatic. Finding something that some people truly love rather than many people like is, in my opinion, a much greater accomplishment. Cheers!

    • @AlanAverillNemtheanga
      @AlanAverillNemtheanga Před 23 dny

      of course....I don't think either of us are under any illusions of becoming any 'bigger' as bands and ultimately what you create should and does stand alone regardless but don' forget, that show you saw in Denver you experienced would not have happened if there had been no appetite among people to see it.....i.e based on some form of relative popularity.....so you kinda need both, plenty of amazing bands and musicians out there will never get the opportunity to travel and play other countries as they never broke through to finding an audience of even 50 people in a bar.....but hey, welcome to the party!!
