The two films made for Biograph were A Natural Born Gambler (1916) and Fish (1916). Background from IMDB (www.imdb.com/title/tt0279085...

Hi. I'm on a mission to watch 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die in 365 Days. This film is featured on that list. If you want to follow me in this journey, read my blog. Hope you enjoy it!: 1001filmstosee.wordpress.com/
One of the first silent films I've been able to understand (at least for the most part) and enjoy, for its excellent acting and screenplay. Many, many thanks for sharing.

Many thanks for this
(Cont'd) Was Amanda Randolph Lillian's sister? There seems to be a resemblance. Anyone?
(Cont'd) I'd like to make this comment. I've noticed a lot of subject/verb misalignment here. I think this might be an error from this point of view. We're looking at a level of African American life where standard English is the rule among this class of people we see in this movie. Proof, listen to the speech pattern of the lead singer of the Ink Spots. Impeccable. The Mills Bros. Joya Sherrill. Ivey Anderson and, of course, the great Ethel Waters. So the "I does..." pattern was more of some, but not all, newcomers arriving from the South. My only point here is to alert many who're not familiar with black American life to the fact that there were and are many levels of speech patterns within black America. This is not intended to be a put down of any speech pattern, since I love them all. Truth be told, ah loves me some he be done did it, too! Ain't that a mess? lol!!!
(Cont'd) Not many know this. But our late and beloved Dot Dandridge could burn up some shoes, too. Hollywood missed the boat by not displaying more of Dot's musical abilities.
I'm watching this very movie this morning: 09:55 AM, 01/18/16, TCM, with the dapper and wonderful Robert Osborne narrating, of course, on TMC. The last time I attended a showing of the Micheaux catalogue was at USC in Los Angeles. It was quite impressive. And the showing was attended by my African American luminaries. For example, the beautiful woman seated in front of me was none other than the late Vonetta McGee. My only question is, where was this shot? Harlem? (I wish I had lived this period in black American life, meaning I wish I had been an adult at this time.) Just one more question. Is this Vailada (Snow) on horn? Anyone?
what is the song @ 17:30?
I'm loving it!
Thanks for posting! What do you think was going through James Baldwin's mind from 45:55 - 46:05?
I enjoyed the movie this was the first black horror movie I thought it was a comedy..
now it is documented beyond a doubt who is the true pioneer of spoken word/rap!!!! 1937 Mr.Robeson spittin!!!
BET used to have a show called "Black Classics" where they showed these films. This was clearly one of the best.
Buckley, true to form comes off as an obnoxious insincere rhetorician. Even his voice, his posture and modulation is that of a snake. Just his introductory remarks made me ill and anxious for sanity.
a classic, with one of the funniest seens in the moves!
I love these movies please keep em coming

cannot listen to buckley
Buckley was a pompous poo poo - that argument about black energy was not enough was disproven easily and anyone that uses it is using at an excuse.
wow, this Baldwins analysis still mostly applies today - 50 years after this debate...
The depth of Baldwin's humanity, eloquence, and empathy is astounding.
Preach, somethings are timeless.
