I find the easiest way to install the game and Windower on steam deck is via Lutris in desktop mode. I did run into the issue where the installer would crap on me and I had to wait a while and repeat the process with it finally installing the game properly. Once installed, find the final Fantasy XI config program in the toolsUS folder to configure game settings to 1280x720 ( I know I should use 1280x800 but 720p setting looks better to me) and configure the gamepad settings. I would run the game, insert my account information and let POL update the game files. Then in Lutris run the Windower 4 installer and once it's done, configure it and try loading the game to make sure everything is working properly. I did find in desktop mode, the gamepad will not work, to fix it press and hold the right button above the ABXY buttons and watch for the requester to pop up telling you that the gamepad is activated so you can test out the gamepad settings you picked. I'm still trying to tweak settings to stop the stuttering and sluggishness of the game when running around in the cities. Once I leave a city frame rates improve by a good margin.

This is the most convoluted way to do this. Just get *Bottles,* *FlatSeal,* (Configure FlatSeal to allow Bottles system permissions) and then install FFXI into that bottle and use *Boilr* to add it as a non-Steam game. Works in Gamemode this way too. Doing it this way takes literally 15 mins top. This is also how I install all of my GOG offline installers I have backed up.

Thanks for the guide I highly recommend using windower if only to run the game in 60 fps. At the windower menu inside Plugins list turn on Config option. and once loged in game enter //FrameRateDivisor 1 and hit enter

The install works but for some reason once I get to the playonline part to input my info the steamdeck keyboard doesnt work. I have it on screen. but once I type it wont do anything in the playonline passcode screen. do you know why? Also I have my passcode input correctly and it says incorrect id and password when I can log in on my PC perfectly fine.

Whats up everyone, im going to help answer any questions about this guide, which by the way, thank you to the OP. Im posting this as of 4/21/24, for anyone seeking a very recent update in the future. The first comment I saw was, why wont the POL and Final Fantasy Install, but directX did(around the 6:40/7min mark). I ran into the same issue, and the reason is because of the Target and Start in path in the non steam game properties is not matching. The OP didnt have this issue because valve didnt roll out the OS update that changed this. Just make sure that when you select properties of the non steam game, you change/update the "start in" path to match the "Target" path. The other concern that everyone and their moms are running into is the section of the guide where you have everything installed, and you find the POL.exe path. People input the path on the Target path and Start In, but when they go to press play, nothing happens. Well again, this is due to that OS update which used to wrap the entire path in " " (quotes). If you look at your path now, its not wrapped in quotes. So simply add one " to the front of the path and one at the end of the path(example: "/path/to/pol.exe"). Once you do this, it all works just fine. Have fun in Vana'Diel on steam deck!
