Footage of Huawei's Unfinished Symphony event in Cadogan Hall, London, on Monday 4 February 2019. Having won a Twitter competition held by Huawei Mobile UK - by tweeting what I love about my favourite piece of classical music - I was invited to the event at Cadogan Hall on 4 February. Little did I realise, however, that it was a VIP event, open only to competition winners such as myself, a few ...

    It just sounds like someone imitating Schubert using motives and themes based on the Unfinished Symphony. The later part sounds like 19th century French/Russian ballet music, rather than a symphony. Where it's lacking most is in the emotional depth of the original.

    What would make them think this sounds like Schubert? This sounds like what Salieri is to Mozart - awkward, repetitive, and even obnoxious at some points; it does not capture the naturalness of what Schubert achieves.

    I get that this is really just a marketing stunt to show Huawei’s emerging AI capabilities, but I would be a lot more impressed to be moved by an original composition of this machine, rather than criticizing its work against the legacy and brilliance of a human composer.

    This is to be the completion of Schubert's unfinished symphony? 05:00 strange copy of the first sentence 05:24 The topic sounds a little bit like Shostakovich 05:32 Brass chord quite inorganic 05:35 Simple thirds... really? 05:39 Sounds like a bad Dvorak 05:45 Just back to the main theme in the keynote without having achieved anything? 05:50 Is that from a different piece now? Ouch, this chord connection is really bad! The worst transition I have ever heard! 06:00 Sounds like it's taken out of any scherzo. As a second theme, the theme of the overture to "Carmen" would have fit almost as well. 06:08 Ouch! 06:15 Is this supposed to have been the exposition? The repetition doesn't make it better. 07:09 Development: Once again simply the parallel major key. Many senseless runs. And that three times over tonic - subdominant - dominant - tonic 07:30 The third time really sounds like a western movie! 07:43 If you can't get out of the constant repetitions in any other way, you have to want to surprise by force. For the first time in my life I hear a symphony slip and fall. 07:50 It picks itself up again with a kind of bad Shostakovich. 08:10 Just into the parallel major key again. 08:23 AAAHH Fade out! How long would we have been tormented with this motif otherwise! 08:29 Any ballet music by a third-ranking composer from 1870. 08:45 The best passage of the whole "symphony"! 09:00 A repetition. Already now? 09:10 This ballet composer is really getting lively now! 09:33 But the transition is not good again! 09:40 There's something wrong with the voice leading! 09:45 Now comes a bad Sibelius! 10:00 And even more Sibelius! 10:12 And again from the beginning. But really nothing fits together! 10:19 Drama! 10:45 Maybe the AI really is more of a Sibelius fan! 11:40 Yes: Sibelius! 12:20 And again ballet! 12:40 The mercy of the fade-out! So a lot of bad music was to be heard. I am so disappointed. There was no sound of bad Schubert! And the AI did not work alone either! As we learn, a composer (Felix Cantor) helped! We learn: "Once the AI suggested a series of new melodies, Cantor used his professional expertise to choose one. Then he elaborated on the software's notes, adding instruments and harmonies to flesh out the AI's contribution into a full movement."

    The cymbals on 11:55 totally fail... I mean Schubert never thinks about using cymbals on his symphony. In addition, I agree that the so-called "4th mvt" is just a re-make of the 1st movement. It gives nothing interest to me. I prefer someone re-use Rosamunde overture and incidental music as the 4th mvt rather than this huawei version.

  • @jehl1963
    @jehl1963 Před 5 lety

    This is a classic example of "Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean that you should do it". Schubert is dead, this Symphony will forever be unfinished. Other people (or software) can make a stab at finishing it, but those are really original compositions standing separate from Schubert's work. Standing on its own, this piece is anodyne and sterile. (Yawn).

    I am a Huawei user. Actually I think it's just more like a commercial work. The piece doesn't sounds like Schubert at all. The completing work should still go along the manuscript

  • @reginaldhubert9119
    @reginaldhubert9119 Před 5 lety

    Why are you copying and rewriting the first movement, if your intention was to complete it? Don't get it. It really sounds like an inverted and augmented type of the original :D

  • @egapnala65
    @egapnala65 Před 5 lety

    The only remaining incomplete movement is a Scherzo which Brian Newbould reconstucted some years back. There was no finale and a movement from "Rosamunde" was substituted. Quite how this works as a completion I have no idea . Sounds like bits of the two complete movements have been fed into it, randomized and fed back out again.

      I would also suggest you give William Carragan's take on the Scherzo and the B minor Entr'acte from "Rosamunde", which works quite well: czcams.com/video/Ff5uSXz0aME/video.html czcams.com/video/gO4To8nBxps/video.html

  • @Bugleur
    @Bugleur Před 5 lety

    It's just bullshit... Schubert can't compose the symphony like that... For instance : trumpets and horns can't play the same phrases as strings or woodwinds with all modulations, because valves doesn't exist yet...

      @@chriskenworthy Schubert also left incomplete sketches for a Scherzo which Brian Newbould completed a while back. Its on here. Check it out, shows this up for the charade that it is. Though I can see it could have potential once more work has been done on refining the programming.
