What kind of accuracy at 100 yards
you can see a 100 yard report with the flintlock version here. Realistically, I could be them well under 2" at 100. bs-bp.forumotion.com/t863-review-traditions-mountain-rifle-flintlock
Here's an old tip for taking the shine off the brass without brass black, fire your black powder rifle with real black powder no substitute powder will work. After firing your rifle a couple of times using a clean patch with rubbing alcohol 70 percent on the patch use patch like swabbing the bore. Then make sure the brass is degreased and clean, and rubbing the dirty black powder patch on the clean brass the brass will have a nice dull antique look that looks similar to color case harding. Just oil afterwards.. just a thought it's an old recipe from a Lyman's blackpowder hand book. And it does work well I've done this to my cva st Louis hawken I purchased in the early 80's. If you want you can just buff it out to shine it up again... nice job on your Hawken looks great..
Something I saw amd tried for my gun, was to widen the nipple. I used a m6x1 nut to protect the threads. Set it on my vice and tapped a punch lightly into the top and checked with a cap until the caps fit snug.
Caliber?

Great video. Great instruction. Well done Sir :)
That an outstanding buck but here in ga. that buck would get you ticketed or jailed the law says at least 4 points on one side and minimum of 1 inch in length its an effed up law and beyond infuriating that dnr keeps on making up new laws that keep getting harder and harder to adhere to im just about ready to give up hunting because of the laws
I guess the people to ask are the national match shooters and bench rest shooters at the Friendship shoots. They would have many years proven results if one way way better than the other. I shoot pre-cut and pre-lubed patches myself because it saves time and labor at the range. I don't see any difference on the target but I am not a champion target shooter.
They look good, I don't like the pure white either, when I stain mine I set them in Febings dye for about 10 minutes, then instead of ringing them off I wipe them down with paper towels, I like the way yours came out, I only learned it from someone who just wiped them down.
The original silencer, and in the hands of those who become one with it a truly fearsome and magnificent tool.
I have hunted almost fifty years with ball. I’m thinking half inch holes through and through game puts dinner on the table. You do your part there ain’t nothing in North America that will walk away from a real
Those of you harping on the .36 should know that when loaded with 22 grains of powder and a 7.5” barrel you’re looking at velocities near a 9mm pistol. .44 may be more impressive (I own quite a few myself) however if some of you are looking at a black powder revolver for personal protection a .36 is more than capable of stopping the threat. Like any firearm, you’re responsible for over penetration and what is behind your target, so be mindful when choosing your caliber.
Velocity is one thing. Energy is where it's at.
@@BuckskinsBlackPowder wild bill Hickok killed quite a few men with a pair of colt navy .36 revolvers. But hey if you opt for the .44 then by all means. I love my .44 revolvers, even carry one in the regular.
Nice Grouping
Just thought you should know, that YT will not let me turn on notifications for your channel. So, if you're all of the sudden not getting many views, that might be why.
So I have had a Big Bore Mountain. 54 cal Caprock since 1982. Her name is Bertha, shoots straight, and trustworthy. I have a Russ Hamm lock I've been considering using it to convert Bertha to flintlock. Mountain man
That Shines Brother like a country girl that can fill out a pair of Daisey Dukes, Hell Yes!!!!!!!
great looking gun
What choke were you using
Factory full choke
👌👍👍👍
I have one of these but sadly a family memeber in the past tried to put a high brass shell through it and ruined it. Lock mechanism still works and it looks cool. I love knowing now what i own
Very impressive shooting at 50 yards. Excellent presentation of the rifle.
My Hawkin rifle that was bought in the 1980`s has a fiberglass ramrod.
You Tube will not let me turn on notifications for your channel. Just thought you should know.
I'll take a look at my end and see what's up. Hope to get back into making little videos. If anyone wants to see something specific, please ask and I'll see what I can do.
I have a CVA Hawken that was given to me back in 94, i stripped the finish off of it and filed off a bunch of excess wood, I really wanted a mountain rifle but never could get the one I wanted. Back then the sights came in metal but I just hated how they looked, so I bought cva mountain rifle sights and replaced them; I also didn't like catching that darn spur on everything so I changed the trigger guard out for one like the original Hawken had, no spur. I also like you don't care for brass and used Birtchwood brass black on it to get that darker antique look, then I got around to replacing the ram rod to a hickory one, much better than plastic. Anyway I rnjoyed your video and the work you did on your rifle, enjoy it for years to come. Cheers 🍻
Those second two shots were right there man. That would be a dead deer. Cool video.
First shot was a cold clean bore. That 50 always wanted a fouled bore lol. I rebarreled it to a 54cal when our hunting regulations changed. Still have that 50 and plan on using it again.
Dang fine group, very nice. I'm on the hunt for a 58cal hawken. Wish they were more common now.
Really good, I'll have to try 20 grains, always shot 30 grains with similar results. I noticed you didn't use nub end of ball starter but I guess it's your way doing it.
I have a 50 caliber traditions dear hunter. I make my patches about 3/4 of an inch wide. Is that good enough? Have yet to shoot it.
It should be. You'll find out easy emough
@@BuckskinsBlackPowder It covers the whole muzzle and I started the ball and yanked it back out. It went in okay. I don't know how it's going to shoot.
This rifle is the Hawken Mountain made in Spain by Ardesa, and marketed in USA by Traditions. Saludos desde España
GREAT JOB ON THE RANGE !!!! YOU deserve the right to wear a coonskin hat !!!! I'm interested in buying a muzzleloader ( but , I'm leaning towards a flintlock, because of the cap shortage where did You get Yours & what month ) .
Thanks for tip on red hot nipples!
If you have to do all that to get the gun to go off that gun is not made right!!
It's understanding how the breech plug is. This ensures proper powder flow into the drum. Thus is a patent breech set up.
This Hawken rifle is made in Spain by Ardesa. Saludos desde España
Just picked up mine for 30bucks needs couple of things but im so stooked thanks for posting so i know what the fuck i got
Do you ever shoot anything? That’s 25 yards away any game? No because it’s usually a lot farther than that why the fuck do you people always shoot so close
I bought a grade 3 curley maple full stock for my T/C Hawken. It was bulky like that one. I turned my teardrop cheek rest into a square one like the old flintlocks. I also left the draw long and necked it back at the grip to give it a sweet long rifle feel. I've been subscribed for over a year and looking forward to the progress of Your build.
I just started getting into traditional style muzzleloaders last year. Ive since bought 6 Hawken style rifles. A American made CVA Mountain Rifle 50, A CVA Hawken Supreme 54cal, a TC Renegade 54 cal, a TC Hawken 50 & a TC Renegade 50, & a Pedersoli Traditional Hawken Target 50cal. I also bought a Peitta 1858 Remington Army 44 cap and ball revolver. My next rifle is going to be a Gemmer Hawken 54cal or Lymen Great Plains Rifle 54cal.
Just picked up a Traditions Hawken percussion .50 and Mountain percussion .50 today. Can you remove the browning on the barrel and blue it instead?
It's ceracoat. I'd talk to a gunsmith. If anything, draw filing it off would probably be the best bet or sand blasting
Could you find a worse backstop for shooting? Bullets zinging the hell all over the place off those rocks. I've shoot thousands of conical bullets out of my Thompson Center Renegades on a single wedge keyed barrel and I have NEVER had a trigger or tang come loose. If your wedge keys do not hold the barrel, bedding the tang and trigger isn't going to do a darn thing for the back force.
Bedding the tang and trigger is to have a rock solid Bedding. Over time, the soft beechwood tends to compress from loosen/retightening from recoil. Bedding stops it in its tracks. Sandstone, crumples easily, plus here's a nice little cave back there full of sand which captures my lead.
My build explains it better. Mostly helpful on Beech stocks or softer woods. Tc walnut stocks will benefit greatly as they tend to Crack near the tang and run across the lock screw. bs-bp.forumotion.com/t354-building-the-traditions-st-louis-hawken-kit-gun
I have two of them both work great. I have found with one of them I use a dry patch on the powder then a lubed patch with the ball and it shoots alot more consistent.
I have one of these cva hawken 12ga barrels. I received the barrel by its self without the under rib. Would it be possible to do a video on how the rib goes on. It’s not like the other hawkens I own. Thanks and great video.
Please do a video on how to properly use the set trigger.
Did you make the coat you were wearing in the Traditions mountain rifle video? if so what did you use and could you do a tutorial?
No I traded for that years ago. It's 80% wool blend. They do sell blanket Capote patterns that you trace out then transfer to a blanket and cut out the pieces to sew together. I'm not very handy when it comes to cutting and stitching!
@@BuckskinsBlackPowder I'll have to look that up, thank you! You've got neat videos
I bought a CVA Mountain Rifle, which is the same gun pretty much that Traditions sells now, and the first thing I did was chuck the old ramrod it came with. It's not 100% accurate, but I got one of those brown delrin rods and it's held up great.
This will be my next rifle,i chose the investarms gemmer .54 with 1/60 twist for my montana hunting...keep the great videos coming!! Wish the traditions had the .54 option...
How well does the cerekote hold up? Im on the fence between this and the gemmer
It held up very well! Not bullet proof but neither is bluing.
