Music and lyrics by Hoyt Axton and Mark Dawson. Axton released two versions of this song; the first appeared on his 1975 LP 'Southbound' (A&M SP-4510). In my opinion this is the better of the two; it can be found on Hoyt's 1979 album 'A Rusty Old Halo' (Jeremiah JH-5000). It's the lovely soprano saxophone playing by David Woodford. Great song - love the guitar part as well!
I am SOOOO Glad you found this - I will HAVE to find it !!! Any direction ?
The guitar came in kinda mushy
Man I was looking for this episode. I struck gold on this post. I sing this song all the time.
I was today years old when I learned who the original artist for this song is! I learned and played it on bass in my first band, in the late 1980s, so it's been a little while 🤣For some reason, I thought it was by Billy Joel, but I've never found the original until tonight, during a "conversation" with Bing Copilot, of all things.
Its interesting to hear this compared to his earlier folk/blues style.
👏👏👏🌹❤❤💞
Im going to see if i can get all of his Christmas songs
Was able to experience live 1976... Small club... Houston
It was an unforgettable event !
Hoyt, a truely multitallented man. song writing (heartbreak hotel for elvis, Jerimiah was a bullfrog and all his own music) Actor "heart like a wheel' and 'gremlins'.
Wow, I'm going to use an adjective I normally wouldn't use when talking about a DRR song but - beautiful!
Love this band!
What a great honor to have the late genius Steve Goodman Record a song I wrote with my superstar pal Billy Vera Steve wrote the fabulous CITY OF NEW ORLEANS***** L.RUSSELL BROWN

This a FANTASTIC Album..... "Go get one"..... PS, unlike Arlene I disagree THIS is the best song. I'll let you go listen for yourselves that there ARE better one's. BELIEVE IT OR NOT. {{PET PARADE is probably my fav.}
Featuring some vocals helping out from the lovely late Nicolette Larson
My dad played this album for us kids back in the day great album ty
Great work. Hoyt is my hero.
I love this song.
I remember hearing this back in 1980 . It's a very original song to say the least.
I heard Davidson sing this song on Johnny Carson back in the 70s. I spent years searching for it, and finally found the album on eBay a few years ago. Great to see it on YT!
Glad i went roams around had couple beers people from all walks of life was there got to rolling stones hats gave one to my 80 year old dad people would asked him where did you get that hat
That demo recording got me interested in recording overall. Fascinating for me as a kid, back in 1973!! 🙂
When "Praise You" came out... I recognized that sample, immediately!!
Reminds me of town I come from and it’s a hole…. Trying to get out and move away at the moment
Love that entire album, I was in heaven when I recently found about Lee Har vey Osmond and Blackie and The Rodeo Kings!
There was just nobody like him.
I discovered this song on the Bleecker St album and sought out previous versions, including the Farinas'. I really like this one best. Great album - produced and most of the instrumentals done by the great guitarist Steuart Smith, the unofficial Eagle.
Lomax ♥️
Nice! ❤️

Every accomplished singer must first be an actor… to understand the lyrics and the meaning of the song and to bring those deeper qualities to the performance. Hoyt understood this in a visceral way - he did a wonderful job of acting the part in addition to using his musical and vocal talents. Thank you brother - may you ramble on in peace.
Great song. It's a shame that this song isn't more well known. I guess it's a song about Jesus.
Can you imagine Arianna grande driving the tour bus?
