    Hi, really enjoy your videos. Can i ask if you have ditched the cintiq completely for the ipad? I see all your new videos are with the iPad and ios specific software. I have tried to get into using ipad for a while now to do my sketches on sketchbook (formerly Autodesk sketchbook) but keep having to get back to windows based version as all our engineering software/systems are windows based and find linking of the iPad to files on windows to be painful or just not workable in a professional environment. Procreate looks great but can't get it for windows. Also end up sketching live on screen for virtual meetings to share ideas and cant do that with ipad so i don't feel i get enough use from ipad for all those reasons. I guess if all your systems are on mac then maybe its better but would appreciate any tips you have re file linking between systems. While not a sketching software, i find onenote to be excellent as the 'notebboks' are automatically synched between ipad and windows. Also Have you used affinity photo in any of your work? If you have, i would, love to see your set up and how you get on.

      Hey there, yeah over the past couple years I've transitioned completely to my ipad, but note that I'm in more of a leadership role where I do more sketching/managing/directing my studio, and I have a great team of designers working under me working on multiple large scale international projects. My team uses all of the industry standard software for our projects, but I still encourage them to use their ipads for sketching and design thinking. Our office is windows based and primarily uses Revit, Rhino, Sketchup and the Adobe suite. At home I'm Mac based. There are definitely many frustrations getting content between windows (ugh microsoft teams!) and the ipad, but there are many instances where it's now engrained into my daily work, maybe I'll make a video about my workarounds for this in the future. But for very large pdfs I'll drop them onto the cloud from my desktop, and open it up on the Files app on my ipad to open in Procreate. For small pdfs, I'll email it to myself then open it directlly in Procreate or Morpholio Trace. For daily quick sketches with my team I will take a picture of what they have on their monitor and sketch over it on my ipad, then copy/paste it into Teams to send back to them. For online presentations, I actually do use my ipad and sketch live during client and consultant calls. Procreate actually handles heavy multi-page pdfs much, much faster than my PC, see my previous video where I touch on this. Regarding One Note, that was my default app for notes for several years and I loved how it synched between all of my devices, however it started to lag as my content in it got heavier (I started to accumulate many screenshots, sketches, images). Last Dec I switched to Notion, and I must say its leaps and bounds above One Note. It took a while to get used to a new system/way of organizing notes, but I actually love Notion now. Regarding Affinity, I never really got into it, as our office has always been heavily Adobe based. Hope that helps, you've given me some ideas on some topics I should cover in the future, thank you!

    • @timmyhotpantz
      @timmyhotpantz Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for your detailed response. Must try notion. Yeah just alot of organising required to prepare to start sketching on iPad ie you need to make sure that you have copied all the files you need from windows which doesn't suit the random day to day sketching or marking up drawings that I do which all come from other windows based software. Re calls on ms teams - the iPad can't access our windows based server so unless you are completely prepared for call and you know what you need to sketch (unless you are presenting a sketch), you are goosed. We are engineering office primarily who also dabble in industrial architecture and the general nature of my sketching varies from problem solving on screen to site layouts to service layouts to concept building layouts and elevations to structural layouts and details. It is not as pure as the beautiful sketch arrangements that I've seen you do but I would love to get to that level. My sketches are much more basic and just try to focus on the communication of our ideas. Would love to find a software that I could use across all platforms and just focus on mastering it. Just too many that work on iPad but not on windows. Have affinity photo but yet to get to grips with sketching on it - doesn't seem to be able to scale on it like Photoshop. Yet to see another engineer or architect using it for this purpose on CZcams. Sketchbook is ok but has other set of problems. Adobe is robbery and my team wouldn't get the value out of it. Anyhow, keep up the good work! I look forward to your next videos.

    The information shared in your last videos are very useful. i wait for your weekly videos. So basically a project go through different phases. in this video you talk about a concept design which is basically what you use in the early stage of a project to quickly visualise ideas to share to team and client. basically a concept design with limited details is useful also to see if the client is serious on developing the project and not to wast much time in sketching visualisation if the project will not go through. Basically concepts design precede more complex designs. I am curious to know your progress. First concept in procreate, then more detailed sketch always in procreate, then sketch up + rendering for 3d version and then photoshop + illustrator + InDesign for presentation to client?

    • @DigSketch
      @DigSketch Před 6 měsíci

      Man that was a long comment! Thank you for sharing. Yes you're pretty much correct, each project goes through phases, and these phases will have some variation in different countries, project types and clients. I typically work on large scale mixed-use projects that comprise a combination of retail, residential, hospitality and commercial. This channel is more focused on early concept stage sketching because that's where most of the exciting sketching for me happens. And yes, being able to come up with compelling sketches early helps align all of the project's stakeholders before the design team gets too far along. I work with and oversee multiple teams and projects in our office, but by the end of concept we typically have 3d models and plans developed in Sketchup or Revit (rendered with Enscape), along with a design presentation developed in inDesign using Photoshop and Illustrator for the content. Here in Dubai, after this stage it it just progressively gets more technical, going to Schematic Design, then Detailed Design, then Tender Drawings and IFC. In these later stages I am doing more daily quick sketches and markups to guide my team as we develop the design further in more detail, and I'm not really doing any more fancy presentation sketches. Maybe I can do a video in the future that walks through our process in more detail.

      @user-wt9nu4qn3z Před 6 měsíci

      @@DigSketch Sorry i am a bit autistic. i understand the normally more complex and technical of a architecture project. With buildings and large areas is typically required renderings, plans, schematic design , section design to visualize it for the different parties involved I guess. My landscape architect field is more simple. I normally use morpholio and sketchup and procreate combined for everything. Sketch and Rendering is now possible just with sketchup4ipad + ai plugin. Another way is using morpholio for sketching as it has set measures option and then rendering it in procreate with photos, textures or brushes imported. It save lots of time and money of course is less attractive then luminion or other programs but it fits perfectly for low budget projects.

    There is a big need for visualize naturalistic planting design in landscape projects. Everyone cover the building + hardscape part but softscape is always detailed less. Procreate has a potential because a plant can be downloaded as 3d model or real photo and added in the design. i hope you will cover this.

    • @DigSketch
      @DigSketch Před 6 měsíci

      I do plan to cover more landscape, but keep in mind it will be from an architect's point of view. I'm working on a video for Site Plans where I cover the general landscaping techniques I regularly use, but I'm not a specialist in this area, as I usually work with landscape designers on many of our projects while I'm really just focused on the building. Maybe I can plan to invite one in on one of my future videos.

    The architectural profession is one of the last to give in to the digital revolution. We love our hand drawings, T square, rolls of tracing paper, pen, and markers. By the end of the day, my wastebasket is full of failed design sketches...Now I use 24-inch Wacom tablets, iPad Pro, Surface Pro, PS, Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, Sketchbook Pro, and 3DS Max. But something special about hand drawings is lost in the digital revolution. Freehand drawings are an art form from concept sketches to working drawings. It is worth preserving this vanishing art form... NCARB Arch.

    I dont think you have properly given Morpholio Trace as much credit as it deserves here. Really the only thing it lacks that Procreate has is brush/tool customization. Procreate is good, but it feels more like an artist's design tool rather than an architecture design tool. Great video though!

    • @DigSketch

      @@DigSketch Thats fair - I utilize both as well, however I disagree with the layer management ability in Procreate. Is it more in depth? Probably, but Morpholio does essentially everything needed with regard to layer management that any artist would need.

      Misleading isn't the right word, it's all a matter of preference. I used an Intuous for about a year before I tried the Cintiq. And once I switched I never looked back. But now most of my sketching is actually on the iPad. There is a big difference in sketching directly on the surface you're looking at.
