    Very nice. Just out of curiosity, why wood in the tender bunker? Wood absorbs moisture, rots and promotes rust. How about a modern alternative? Plastic wood should give the needed elasticity without the downsides of actual wood.

    • @AmericanSteamRailroad
      @AmericanSteamRailroad Před 5 dny

      Hi, thank you for your interest and question as to why wood is used to prevent metal to metal contact and wear. While you bring up very good points, there is an additional factor that comes into play, and that is the crush factor. The oil bunker filled with oil will weigh upwards of 24 tons, and hard wood such as White Oak and Cherry offer the crush resistance strength required, and with proper treating will last 15 to 20 years. If you study older tank cars, you will also see wood used between the frame saddles and the tank as well. Since we know wood works and is accepted railroad practice, we decided to use the proven way.

    • @maestromecanico597
      @maestromecanico597 Před 5 dny

      @@AmericanSteamRailroad Thank you very much for that. Properly treated wood will last a couple of decades. Unfortunately I have dealt with applications left go for closer to a century and the damage was significant. Ever since then I have weighed the classic practices handed down by the forefathers with potential newer solutions for the sake of those yet to come.

    I think it is very commendable the level of transparency that you provide. With just a single video a month you provide everybody with the information about how the money they contributed is begin spent and it builds trust that the money is begin spent properly. In my opinion too many organizations, railroad related or not, ask for money and provide next to no transparency about how that money is being spent. What your organization does should be a standard for any non-profit asking for donations. Keep up the good work!

Hopefully your oil conversion will convince other providers to do the same, I know the friends of the 261 are heavily looking into doing so but it's my hope 611, 765 and even 2716 will do so as well. Coal is getting more expensive to burn in steam as you've stated and it'd make it possible for those engines to run the nation over.

    Here are a couple more questions I have: 1. If or when the booster is installed on the locomotive (whenever that may be), does there need to be any modifications done to the booster due to oil burning system in order for the booster to work, or does the booster function the same whether the locomotive is coal or oil burning? (I'm guessing the latter). 2. Does ASR or any ASR volunteers own guest whistles that could be put on the locomotive?

Thank you for your good questions, I have replied below for you: 1) The 2 cylinder booster engine runs off of steam, so no changes need made for it to operate whether the 2100 is coal or oil fired 2) Yes, we have several members and donors with a variety of other steam whistles. We will pipe the 2100 to allow for guest whistles, however while being operated as the AFT 250 we are only planning to use the brand new Reading 6 Chime that was generously donated by one of our members.

      Hello! Should an opportunity arise that can logistically be done, and is financially viable, ASR will do everything possible to make a meeting with the 2102 happen and do performance comparisons which would be very interesting indeed! Should the UP have an interest in having the AFT 250 visit their railroad, ASR would gladly discuss the possibility with them. Thank you for your interest.

    A lot people complain about oil conversions, but don’t understand that it is more complicated than just buying the source of fuel upfront. Fire risk can be a large reason as to go with oil as well.

      Yes! Also, more railroads would be interested when a steam locomotive burns oil. Of course, some “know-it-alls” always be smart alecs and ask “where are you going to run it?”.

      Greetings! Yes, there were many factors that came into consideration for our decision to change to oil, including the ones your mentioned. Please read our press release for additional details: www.americansteamrailroad.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/ASR-2100-Press-Release-Tubes-and-Oil-Conversion.pdf

    Good to see a proper oil conversion instead of refractory cement over the grates

    While I'm not the biggest fan of the locomotive being converted to oil, I do understand the economical and practical benefits of the conversion in the long run, plus, it's better than the locomotive being stuck exposed to the elements in a park or outside an industrial complex. As long as it puts on a good show, that's all that really matters to me at the end of the day. There is one miniscule detail though that I'm curious about, and that is why does the stack talk of an oil burner sound different than a coal burner? I noticed this when watching videos of Everett Railroad 11, the locomotives of the Durango and Silverton, Great Smoky Mountains Railroad 1702, and other steam locomotives when they were coal burners compared to now that they are oil burners. Is it because of what type of fuel is being burned, how much the fuel is being burned, because of the locomotives draft, or something else? Keep up with the amazing work!

      Hello, and great question. An oil fire does not need as much draft as a coal fire, and with advances in more efficient designs made to the blast nozzle and a reduction in back pressure the sound does change somewhat. Not to say an oil burner doesn't have a commanding chuff when working hard, as 3751 and 1522 have proven.
