Getting OUT of your kayak - and staying dry!
Working a lot with groups, I find that people are often scared of getting OUT of the kayak. This transfer from water to land - especially when tired - can be tricky and sometimes results in a dunking.
Here are three ways to get out and with my four top tips at the end.

My least favourite part of any trip. I managed to fall out in 2 inches of water due to a leg cramp the other day. Much to my grandsons amusement.
Thanks for the comment. Leg cramps can be very painful! Sorry it triggered a dunking for you!
HI, the blocks on the left just before drop 4 are not just to test you, they are there for a reason, youre supposed to wait in the eddy behind them in case there are any playboaters playing below the drop. This wasn't the case for you, but normally if there are, you cant really see them from above until its too late, a tell tale sign would be someone standing bank side river right, so you wait in the eddy behind the blocks for a thumbs up to let you know they've cleared for you.
Many thanks for this comment and the heads up.
I was teached to use a "Paddle bridge" to stabilize the kayak if you struggle to jump out with an impressive triple salto like I normally do. 😉🙃
Many thanks for your comment. If I recall, the paddle bridge places the paddle behind your body and bridges from the kayak to the bank. It then gives you a platform to hitch your bum up on to and move across to the bank. It works when the kayak and bank are at the same height. Worth trying it and practicing to see if it works for you. Have fun and stay safe.

Some really good things to think about in that video 👍 keep up the good work
Thank you.
I prefer, Hey buddy, my back is killing me today, can you get this down tot he river for me?
A brilliant solution! Thanks for your comment.
In the 70s I did slalom kayaking. We made our own kayaks for $40-50 from materials purchased through the local canoe club using moulds hired from the club as well. These boats were 4 metres (13 ft) in length and weighed 13 - 18 kg (30 - 40 lb), made from fibreglass using chopped strand matt & polyester resin. You could make a lighter & stronger boat using woven rovings as woven mat absorbs less resin than chopped strand. Alternatively, high end comp boats of that time were carbon kevlar at half these weights or less. By the late 70s, I though people were rediculously crazy for buying super heavy PE boats at 6 times the cost & more than double the weight. I still have my KW7 & Lettermann Olymp from those days, though much repaired. I have since purchased a 17 ft Geoff Barker designed Sea Wasp & it's not much heavier than my original slalom kayaks. All of these kayaks are very easy for me to lift and carry on my shoulder. Not so easy getting them on an SUV though as I am not tall, but they are very easy to lift onto a small sedan.
Thank you so much for sharing this history with us. Great to hear your views on kayak weights and I agree, kayaks now are really heavy!
My go to position is the shoulder lift, don't have to rely on others. Trolley is good for across the car park but not much use if you're climbing over rocks and seaweed etc. good video as always.
Thank you for your positive comment. The shoulder lift is great once you get used to it and can do the initial lift. As mentioned in a previous comment, standing the kayak on end might make it easier to get it on your shoulder.
Good video I really do like all the useful information 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Always appreciate your comments and support.
It's easier to get it on your shoulder by picking it up at one end, moving it to almost vertical before putting your shoulder into the cockpit.
Thanks for the comment and advice.

Brilliant review, love it. Enjoy your adventures :)
Thanks for your comment. Really like your kit!
In most cases, strong towbacks are best escaped by swimming down as the water will carry you under the towback and then resurface below the hole. That might be difficult though if the life vest is too buoyant.
Thanks for the comment. Certainly it is worth a try. Keep safe.
Good video Dave 👍 you mentioned that you do some teaching where about do you do that ?

@@EdDaveKayaking superb, I will look forward to it. I first did ferry gliding when I was only Ten, many years ago mind, when canoeing was part of my DofE.

Yes it was! I loved paddling it. Got a couple of wave surfs too! Thanks for your comment - always appreciated.
Looks great I have never done that part of the Dee but after seeing your video I might have to try it 👍
You should! It's such a scenic paddle. Water level needs to be moderate so you can paddle it without scraping! Thanks for your comment.
is stopper the british term for hole?
It is. Thank you for your comment.
Great tips! I always do research on access points also. I haven’t tried getting in a kayak from a platform.. doesn’t look easy
Thanks for the positive comment. Yes, a high side entry can be tricky. It's all about balance - and of course, practice!
Good tips 👍I’ve always fancied doing a seal launch but never had the confidence 😂
All good advice as always. Most of my paddling is sea paddling so less of a problem, launching from the shore line. Occasionally I do practice seal launching off a rock, just to keep my hand in.
@@bobp5885 Give it a go! Try off a small grass bank first. Keep momentum on the kayak and it will be fine. Not like this! czcams.com/video/8OKmDVqYSvM/video.htmlsi=2U-ftckWXi_J24m5&t=785
@@bobwolfe5342 Thanks for the positive comment Bob. Good to hear of your experiences. Launching off sand can be hard work if you don't time it right with the waves. All too painful memory for me! Take care.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your comment.
I remember being so nervous about breaking OUT on white water. Mostly because I would lean the wrong way and tip over. Here's some great tips that may help you to improve your breaking out. Let me know in the comments.
Maaaan, I had the fear of God put into me about weirs in whitewater rescue training, so the thought of a weir being a "fun playspot" had me like 👁👄👁 Here in Canada, we tend to call them low-head dams. In the US, you sometimes see signs that call them drowning machines! I wonder...is there a difference in construction between weirs in the UK and weirs in North America? Are our weirs more dangerous?
Hello! Thanks for your comment. I think you might be right. Weirs in the UK vary enormously from gentle slopes to vertical drops. It's common for UK paddlers to play on weirs especially ones with waves or formed stoppers. In fact we have competitions (play boating and slaloms) on some. The dangers are not drummed home as much because of this. As you pointed out, low-head dams (which are seen in the UK but not much) are much more common in the US and Canada. These are deadly in most water levels so therefore no playing/paddling is encouraged. I really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch and greetings from the UK!
Great to see the old rochopper out again. Its getting plenty of use lately. Looks like a nice spot, but fairly exposed I would think. Nice video as always.
Thanks for the positive comment Bob. Yes, loving the RH as it is so comfortable to paddle for long periods. Also took it out on a stretch of white water - video coming in a couple of weeks! Have fun and stay safe.
I was waiting to see teggie 😂
Yes, so were we. Perhaps he isn't real ...
Great video! Showing trees circulating really brings it together.
Thanks for your positive comment. Yes, those types of weir are really dangerous. Stay safe.
Looks like a nice relaxed paddle, very chilled.... pardon the pun. Lovely spot.
Hello Bob. I liked it even though it was cold. Very quiet too, apart from the geese! Keep paddling.
Love the music you used.. matches the serenity of the lake. Looks so cold though!
It was freezing! Luckily not iced over though! I get my music from Epidemic Sound www.epidemicsound.com/music/featured/ - really good selection. Thanks for your comment and safe paddling.
💕Wow🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍💗
I had different problems with both my rockhoppers. Cables seize if not in use for a while, inspite of plenty of lube. In the end I cut the cable on one and drilled a hole just beside my left hip . Shortening the cable made it easier to keep free. I know you should paddle as though you don't have a skeg but sometimes I am very glad to have it. Keep paddling.
Hi Bob. That's a great solution. Agreed, the skeg is super useful and I've used it already out on the water - video coming soon! Thanks for your comment and happy paddling.
Great review, but for 500 quid I'm quite happy to take the cold hit in my 100 quid wetsuit until I swim to shore haha.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I thought the same initially. But with the 40% off and free dry bag, I felt it was worth a punt. So far, really happy with it and I like being dry at the end of the session! Happy paddling.
I'm sure I'll invest in one one day, when I'm a little older and colder. They do look very cosy. @@EdDaveKayaking

Always a possibility in certain circumstances - a great roll is going to minimise it though! Have fun and keep paddling.
A great skill to have. A reliable break in avoids capsizes and makes your decent more enjoyable.
Like the colour and the reflective stripes. Good thinking. My pogies are black, maybe not the best idea. Inside my sleeve there is an elastic cuff which stops water running down the cag onto my hands, but it does make them a bit fiddly to get on sometimes. I find after a while my hands get too warm and I have to slip them off now and again. Keep paddling.
Thanks for your comment Bob. Great information about your pogies. I've always been keen to be seen so try and get bright clothing. Every little helps as they say. Have fun and happy paddling.
Wow the view in this video is so cool! Great video! 👍
Thank you!
Bringing your feet up behind you is the key. Then you can kinda swim onto the board.
How do you keep your TUSH warm ?
Great question! I have added thermarest padding to the kayak seat (which makes a huge difference) and wear a decent thermal suit under my drysuit. Gloucester was a long paddle so the exercise kept me toasty warm. Stay safe and happy paddling.
Never really thought of the rock hopper as an ice breaker, before. But why not... Nice little video, enjoyed it as always. Always something of interest. Keep up the good work.
Hello Bob. Thank you for your comment. Yes, I was surprised how good the RH was - until the ice was thicker! It only broke a narrow channel which made paddling tricky. Keep well and happy paddling.

Interesting video. How nice is that, just cruising along a beautiful canal disturbing nothing.Beats walking on the towpath.
Glad you enjoyed it - I did. Our canals are often stunning and many have secluded stretches which are really nice to paddle. Have fun and stay safe.
