Hah! I just put 19,000 miles on a 21 890R, before that I put 51,000 miles on a thoroughly tricked out DR650. But, yesterday I found a deal on a 21 690R and had to get it. Very low miles, with a good 1200.00 spent on extras I would have bought anyway. Oddly both my tip toes touch down on the 690, but not on the 890R. 1 foot down at a time only. A DR and a 690 are literally in different time zones. Not even vaguely related. Even though Im a lifelong dirt rider, for me, near 500lbs is just plain too much. An 890 is no trailbike, great on any dirt road and wonderful on pavement. Gotta say the 690R makes the 890R feel like a Gold Wing, almost, on road anyway. 690 is kind of a hard edged beast, perfect for any BDR for sure. No I didnt sell the 890.

I’ve got a tall windshield and tower on mine. It makes a lot of difference in fighting the wind on long trips. I couldn’t do without it. 👍🏻👍🏻

You missed the tunnel! We used to park on Martindale Rd and ride. 45 some years ago! Jim Pomeroy had an MX training class out there and we would wait till class was over and ride around the track. Super fun for a kid on an RM60!

I looked at the KTMs Husky’s etc.. I couldn’t justify the cost to ride around on dirt roads at my camp. I bought a 2023 XR650l for $7850 otd and I am very happy with the bike. I just did the simple mods like richer jetting, changed the gearing, etc..

That baby deserves to be in the mountains. I bought one a week ago. I’m coming down / up from a Husqvarna Norden 901. A lot of difference! It came with double take mirrors, so no problem there. I’m 6’1” and I’m on my tip toes a little. But I can be flat footed too. It’s got a seat concepts seat on it. I think I’m gonna love it. Post from the BDR please. 👍🏻👍🏻

For the life of me I can't understand why 65+ year olds want to go adventuring off the beaten path choose a 500lb bike without gear. The 690 is the perfect adventure bike.

Kinda funny I came across your videos looking at AT stuff. Im thinking of getting a AT for longer runs. Then I see you got a 690. I have a 2021 690 and just love it. I put the rade garage rally kit on mine thinking I was going to use it for long long trips but now thinking maybe an AT would be the better tool. Really enjoy your vids

Wait.... when did you get AT? do you still have 701? I have a XR650L, and 701. I never ride the 701 though. We tend to ride pretty hard stuff and the 701 is just too fragile with so many things to break.

Hi Max, nice vid. Wish I could have joined you! I love that area too. I have some things to show you right off that very road! If you want to enjoy that area in a 4x4 you have to go in the winter when it's impossible to ride there. Otherwise, the Blue mountains are boring in a 4x4! I have done many of those roads in a pinto station wagon. Easy peasy! But when the snow is 5FT deep or more things get very interesting up there! 2PSI in the 36'' + tires on your Toyota and now you're having fun. There is a large group of 4x4 guys around that area that only come out in the deep snow. Super nice folks. Strangers that will help you winch and dig your buddy's land cruiser out of a ditch for 3 hours! Good people, Good times!

Interesting hearing your thoughts on the XR650L after riding a 6speed twin for awhile. I've ridden a borrowed XR that was hardly modified (smog delete, pumper carb) and came away thinking it would need $2500+ in stuff to make it more useful. Big tank. Stock carb + jetting mods. Oil cooler. Subframe reinforcement. Better seat & headlights. Big lithium battery. The jump from 1st to 2nd was so steep, then the jump from 2nd to 3rd so mild, but that can be fixed. Looked like a long project.

Great video, looks like such a blast. I'm seriously considering a 690, exactly for what this video shows. I'm not planning any huge pavement mile rides, but still what are your thoughts on the 690 verses something like the 890 or your Africa Twin??? Thank you!
