IMHO, at the end of 2015 Clarkson panicked and thought, "Better try and rebuild now and not get caught short!" So, Lake and Hale were the first to be sacrificed. Then came the disaster of 2016! And they were SO close!! Imagine if Lake was in either of those finals; especially put onto Stringer in the second one?! After those 2 games, Hawthorn's playing soul had been destroyed. Shameful how all those once lauded Heroes were shown the door after that. Lake especially could have, should have, gone one more year!!

I'd love to think some of the younger hawks see this, I know Sam will let him know how good he was but you don't really comprehend it until you see it. He was the most impressive VFL player I ever saw and one of the genuine all time great Hawks, probably underrated by many because we had so many great players. Would not have swapped him from any player in his era and so glad he is coaching us.

What a dream run for Lake, 3 years at Hawthorn with 3 premierships. Lake was a fantastic player and an integral part of the Hawks backline. Kills me to say it but in my view he was a better player than Chris Langford.

I played in the middle with whitey for two seasons at kedron juniors (06 premiers 😜) , he was a freak and on a totally different level to everyone else honestly he really was, a Tough bastard with silky skills, well done mate not many people can say they played over a 100 games of AFL , this is awesome to watch years later 👏🏼🍻 (muzza)

Totally legal in this era of football and Ablett went down like a sack of spuds trying to milk a free kock. Ayers kept his arm tucked in and never raised it. Totally legal bump. You'd getting thirty weeks for that these days. BYW: I was at the so-called "corresponding games whoch had the 'Neville Bruns' incident" and Bruns deserved everythong he got. He, Mark Kackaon and one other player, I forget who, had been after Gary Ayers, Chris Langford and when Jacko ran the length of the field to het.onvolved in the imcodent before Bruns got whacked everyone knew things had gotten out of control. Even the commentatora wonder why Divine was leaving Jacko on the ground. That match was a disgrace. Not becaise Matthews smashed Bruns jaw, he got what he was due, but because the officials had lost control of the proceedings long before that incident took place amd they should've spiken to John Divine about Mark Jackson at the half time break. Leigh Matthews gets charged by the police and deregistered by the VFL yet 20yrs later Barry Hall king hits Brent Staker, live on national television, and gets nine weeks. Go figure.

Geez I'd love to watch this whole game. The Hawks put on 25 goals in the second half. Just tuning up for that years finals.
