    why do you want straw in this "cob"? the other components are not biodegradable, but wont the straw be broken down over time? what does it even do the mixture or is it legit just a filler agent to reduce cost on clay and sand? i mean without the straw if you added a small amount of cement to the previous mixture wouldn't you just end up with concrete? makes me wonder if something like rammed earth, or compressed earth blocks could server the same function as this cob stuff.

    • @suburbanbiology
      @suburbanbiology Před dnem

      The straw serves a similar purpose to rebar in concrete. Adds tensile strength. Once dried does not biodegrade on the scale of a human life.

    • @ProudVet-Russ
      @ProudVet-Russ Před 23 hodinami

      @@suburbanbiology good to know. i've been playing around with looking into compressed earth blocks and rammed earth as a building material for walls/floors or even making tiles for a roof. the motivation is purely financial as the building material is crazy cheap if you have spare earth with the only cost being the machine and some cement to mix into it before compression. this seems like another great low cost option though admittedly if you need to be real exact like the 3:1 ratio of sand to clay with some hay i'm guessing you can't sub that out for typical earth easily. still it has the advantage of being moldable to the shape you desire vs strict blocks or 2x4's.

  • @ProudVet-Russ
    @ProudVet-Russ Před 2 dny

    this sure seems like a cool technology but i have no idea how i'd use this to heat a home or shed. if the building is 2x4 then trying to pass through the wall from the outside with those heated pipes could start a fire. and even if you go into a mason building with no risk of burning down the bricks then how are you going to cover those pipes for both safety and thermal mass for the heater?

    in a 1 gallon hand pump sprayer, add 3/4's of a gallon of distilled water & top-off with clear ammonia & about 3 fl.oz. Dawn liquid soap. Mix it good & spray it onto the cob as building the progress goes. This mixture will help the new mix of cob adhere better to the old last laid cob... The same mixure is also used in stucco work.

    There’s actually some really good reasons against collecting rainwater at least massive amounts of rainwater (I’m not trying to condemn you. I enjoyed your video very much, )collection in some places at least unregulated water collection Probably the biggest one though is that municipal sewer systems and water supply systems need to be replenished Another could be contamination or what if somebody doesn’t have the same access like for example think of some bourgeois capital owner like Elon musk, and he builds some enormous structure or something and soaks up so much water than other people are left without access

    I have a 15K gallon cistern under 1.5 of the 2 car garage, extending the depth of the garage. It has a brick filter wall, and goes through other filters once in the home. The downspouts are diverted into the cistern, with an overflow that goes out to the yard, with a downgrade to the pond. It has never overflowed, that I have seen. When we bought the house, it came with a bamboo 10 ft pole marked at 6&12 inch marks to measure cistern depth through the 2 manholes in the garage floor. It hadn't been cleaned until we bought the house. As far as I know, the build date was 1955. No one knows it's there. It runs on a pressure tank, that can be put to a generator if power is out.

    Plenty of people put a lot of thought into "prepping" food supplies. Not nearly as many people talk about "prepping" water supplies. It mostly just gets glossed over, but it's way more important than food. If you ask me you should have at least 4x the gross weight of your food supply in water. I've never experienced a drought or other water supply issue like Texas did a few years ago, but I have had some boil water advisories and power outages. My strategy was to simply buy a couple extra 1 gallon or 5 gallon jugs of water occasionally and store them. Over the last 4 years I've amassed about 100 gallons, which isn't that much, and definitely not enough for more than a few months, but storage space and weight are also factors that people with a back yard to fit a tank like that in will have to think about
