Fascinating and beautiful workmanship.. way ahead of the times and still way ahead of real craft and beauty.
he only has two toes left
Great camera work.
Nail factory is scared of this technique goes worldwide
No he visto ni un clavo
Is it possible for a foreigner to learn this craft? I am interested with this.
Amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What a complex appearance that joint had and yet it was simply slid together, genius. Love the satisfying sound of the sharp chisels shaving the timber.
Pissed me off that I didn’t see it get cut off
Is that any good on mdf?
Bravo !
My ADD 😮
I'm seeing it with my own eyes, but i still can't believe it's possible. Naoto Kawai must be a genius.
What is it about the Japanese that whatever they do, from ancient crafts like this, to the latest technology, they do so well? These joints are a thing of beauty.
Love it! What's the purpose in that type of joint? Extention of a beam?
It's a scarf joint.
Beautiful Joint!
Good job 👍
How are these pieces held together?
Friction and the expansion of the wood fibers against each other as he hammers them in.
@@FoxyfloofJumps normally this joint would have a wedged dowel in the centre. A friction fit on such a large board looks dangerous.
@@kmo6480 they've been doing this kind of thing for a few centuries. i would trust it to hold.
@@CrudeBuster I understand that however it all depends on the use of the piece and the pressure that the joint comes under if any and from which direction.
@@kmo6480 again, no disrespect, these guys have been doing this kind of stuff for a long while. they barely had metal to do tools, nails were a luxury. nowadays even the most simple furniture is mostly cheap wood jointed by screws and nails, back then it had to last...
Origami for wood. And thank you for just the sweet sound of bells and chisel on wood
He makes it look like butter instead of wood. It's so fantastic, so expert, I would love a table made from legs like that with a glass top, to be able to see this workmanship.
After work dont tell us about lumbar back pain
I am forever fascinated by japanese woodworking.
Buildings things I tend to go for the simplest solution to get the job done well, but the level of satisfaction achieved from making these joins must be quite something, I'm tempted to try them out one day ❤️
CZcamsrs: "handcrafted" 🤭 this guy: hand. crafted. 😐.
Gracias
Undoubtedly, but , definitely, an ancient human technology, unmatched, even by today’s technology.
You need to cut better
Cut better? May not be perfect, but looks damn good to me. Well done OP!
If you want efficient support there should no cracks. Unless you think minimal effort is damn good while spitting on it for good luck it then I will not argue with you. (:
Can I ask: what is the finish you have on the wood?
How is Japanese joinery so amazingly precise when the layout is done with fat ink lines? What is the technique? Western methods use a knife line, which has no width, but it has its own problems. I would like to understand the Japanese method so that I can try it in my work. Is the idea that you keep track of where the ruler was and simply work to that side of the line and the rest of the ink is in the waste? Is there a standard way to mark which side of the ink line is the ruler side since some layouts become very complicated? Thank you for the excellent video!
Beautiful
Fun fact: the reason he has that split in his shoe is that if the axe swings towards him he can catch it
The whole joint is relying on thst 1 inch piece of wood isn’t it?
It relies on compressive strength and ability. I guess it kinda holds it together but once weight is sat down on it it’s all she wrote
@@kravenkrawlhobby5438 is that dependant on what its used for. as a post it might hold weight. but as a header or joist, it would just fold.
@@episdosas9949 I believe they use those for post repairs and not beam loads.
Use as a beam is the primary use case for this joint. It’s much stronger than you think; don’t overlook the notches on the sides. There are centuries-old buildings in Japan where this joint has been used extensively.
@@donny_bahama it’s primary use is not beam work it’s post so get real. When it is being used as a beam there is no load on said beam cause load is set over a post. This is literally the work I do for a living
Tight work 😉
As always near perfection!
Like a glove ❤
Very nice! Beautiful Joint. You can barely see it.
Wow, amazing!!🤩
The MOTHER of all chisels!!! 😂
How much would you pay for something like that?
Oooh now I need one 😂
It has been used as a traditional method to protect timber siding surfaces, mostly for exterior cladding on traditional Japanese houses, when there was still no means of chemical wood protection.
