swimming pool pump cavitation
For the most part, it’s easy enough to identify; the system starts to sound like there is gravel running through it, the flow rate fluctuates, and you may also have a steady stream of tiny bubbles coming back into the pool through the return jets. That’s not the mystery. It’s the reason a pump cavitates where the internet spews bull squat.
The impeller is the part of the pump that ‘throws’ the water. This is also the part of the system that takes the brunt of the damage when cavitation occurs.
The influent (inflowing) water is drawn into the wet end by the spinning impeller’s suction. After the water passes through the pump pot where the strainer basket is kept, it must enter the pump volute before it reaches the impeller. Or through a diffuser, if a diffuser pump is directed to the impeller’s eye.
.
.
Brass is 67% Copper and 33% Zinc
Why Pool Pump Cavitation Sucks!
Bernoulli’s equation.
As the impeller spins (counterclockwise), centrifugal force exerts on the water. The rotation increases both its pressure and velocity, driving the liquid through the discharge and into the filter. This force creates low pressure at the eye, water from the pump pot rushes to fill, giving us the suction that draws the water from the pool.
Why Pool Pump Cavitation Sucks!
Subscribe to our Pool Operator Talk eNewsletter
If something were to restrict the flow of water to the impeller, the pressure at the eye would drop further. This could be due to a full pump basket, incorrect valve position on the suction side, clogged suction pipe, stuffed skimmer basket, blocked main drain, or a vacuum filter (if present) in need of cleaning.
.
A low-pressure boil.
If the pressure drop were significant enough, the water would flash to steam. These steam bubbles are whisked along the veins of the impeller. Some get caught in the effluent (discharge) stream of water and may make it back to the pool. This explains the floor returns bubbles when a vacuum DE filter is long overdue for a cleaning.
.
Collapsing of air bubbles.
Most of the bubbles won’t make it past the veins of the impeller. Once they reach the water with higher pressure, the bubbles begin to implode. The steam bubbles’ violent collapse sends shock waves through the water that can damage the pump’s internal components. This will cause pitting, and the impeller typically takes the bulk of the damage.

Vac Daddy has a lot of suction, in fact if you bottom out at all it rips the hose they send with it wide open. They replaced it 3 times i finally gave up trying to use it. It's extremely cumbersome getting it back to the pool area. It needs a cart that will accommodate a battery. The power supply it comes with would be a great backup for when your battery runs down but power receptacles are surprisingly in short supply around pools. I really would like to use it more, maybe a year later some of this has been fixed.

Ive learned to never let the customer make me his bitch. I make the customer my bitch, no exceptions. Otherwise they will walk all over you and treat you like they treat the landscaper, and the waiter, and the mechanic, handyman etc. Some are great, most (here in Ca) could care less about the pool guy. I learned after a couple years that using a credit card system for payment is the best. The card gets charged automatically BEFORE I do any work, no exceptions. The accnts always get setup on autopay, no exception. If I feel the customer is unreasonable, I dont hesitate to drop them, my phone rings constantly for service. If they write a bad review, I always respond back by saying " thankyu for the review, glad you were able to finally understand the problem, and we are back to doing business as usual" even though its bullshit, it makes them mad when they read it, and makes the review reader think you are reasonable. Once you make the customer respect you, they wont hound you.

Boric acid is a one time addition and also serves as an agastat. The level does not deplete in water and as you implied can only be lessened by replacing water. Inquire with your pool service company- they should be able to tell you the cost of what is needed to replenish at the beginning of the opening season. I’m sure you’ll find it nominal in comparison to the initial dose and the cost of a seasons worth of muriatic acid.

ive made trash pumps off a optiflo above ground pool pump . the downside i have with those is the pump basket clogs in 10 seconds with algae muck and debris even using a inline canister . ill use my riptide with the green clean out bag big holes like a laundry bag on day one of flips then ill just have the pools topped off and flat vac to waste. if its a cartridge ill just remove the cartridge and retrofit a ball valve on drain plug of filter with a backwashe hose out in yard or drainage. ive used hammerhead , powervac and riptide liked the rip so much i got 3 now. the quality of bags on the rip to me is what sets the power vacs apart and the quality of the cart and vac heads. even tho they are pretty beefy and heavy . it was between this and the bottom feeder but with the price point of the vac daddy an the bottom feeder at almost 1500 it what keeps me away from buying either. that and the fact you only get aroun 2 hours vac time on either . i threw a 80 ah duracell on our rips and we get 4 days vac time off one charge . 110 pools
