Going down mountains on bikes and skis. Subtext will likely turn into "middle aged man trying to keep up with teenage son" and the psychological ramifications of getting surpassed by the next generation and hopefully mostly being OK with that. And there will be a dog. And there might be some useful information about mountain biking around the North Shore. And it will be fun!
Hardtail MTB outing on Mt. Fromme - Lower Oilcan and Lower Expresso, punishing, then fun!
Busy spring day led me to Lower Oilcan, a less popular trail on Mt. Fromme - for good reason! It's a rough one, but it has it's charms.

A bumpy ride down Dale's and the spot where I came off the bike and dislocated my shoulder on Forever After. I revisited a trail that I hadn't been down in about 15 years and I thought to myself, as I walked a lot of it, "I should be able to do this", so I'm setting that as my goal for this year. Just get down it cleanly, not stylishly, not all the hardest lines, just get down it. This video is the baseline as well as a little walking tour with the wife and the dog. insane riding on a hardtail, those trails look amazing. Hoping I will get a chance to ride these some day.
Are you still on the Rootdown? Any changes?
Deceptive editing... How far from front door to trailhead? ;)
About 10mins riding from front door to trailhead.
I love your videos. I went back to watching some of them again. This video made me realise that there are very few bike videos showing someone walking the same trails, and then someone riding them. I just want to say that I have appreciated your videos. I like that you’re a mortal rider, and not someone like Rémy Metailler. Anyway, I hope you’re well and I just wanted to compliment you on the videos you shared.
Thanks for the feedback. I was actually just walking that trail again the other day and thinking I need to hit it with the bike! I've stopped posting videos as I was out with an injury for quite a while and lost a lot of confidence on the bike. I've switched to a full suspension bike now and it's amazing how much easier the trails are! I've only had a couple of rides on it, but it's going to be what gets me back up there. Thanks again!
What is the offset on the fork that you are running?
Sweet dog, sweet riding.
Great honest review dude 👏
Thanks! Mostly trying to keep it simple!
I recently mulleted my hardtail 26er with a 29" fork and 27.5 front wheel, and it was worth the effort for me. The bike was just scary with the short wheel base and sharp head angle before. It obviously climbs worse, but I have no problem down-hilling it now on trails people mostly take full suspension bikes.
Hey. Hope you're well. It's been a while since I checked your page. Missing your videos. They were my favourite. Upgraded to a Norco Torrent HT S2 (steel) and have been riding anything and everything I can survive in Ontario while trying to keep up with my 12 year old. Thanks for the inspiration!
I was thinking of doing this but with 29x2.6 front and 27.5x2.6 rear, both in 30id rims.
Just curious, what tyres are you running?
I've currently got Minion DHF (front) and DHR (rear), 2.5 width, stickiest rubber available. They are definitely a good winter tire for these parts, not so much in summer time. I also like to run High Roller 2s - they've been a good year round tyre for me.
@@whatgoesup8972 ok thanks :)
Trying to get my hands on either one of these or the other two frames you mentioned. As a roadie/gravel guy from Alberta now living in BC this seems the perfect entry into the North Shore vibes.
Good luck getting your hands on one! I'm actually waiting for a new frame as well since the M/L Rootdown is a little small for me. I think if you are used to the gravel bikes, a steel hardtail will be right your alley for the North Shore. Good luck!
Thanks for spending the time to bring us along. I really enjoyed everything I hope you do more. Subscribed
Wow I never seen someone kill like u do on gnarly trails even hardtail party and he has a whole channel dedicated to hardtails. Subbed and wishing you a speedy recovery! I think I wanna buy a hardtail now lol...I was thinkin Ragley Big Al
Thanks Roy. The shoulder is better now but the trails are under a lot of snow! I'll be back on the bike soon and looking to put out more videos of my local trails. Thanks for subscribing!
You remind me of a very calm, relaxed Will Ferrell 😅 I'm Ron Burgundy? Hehe Love the bike 👍👍
Oh man, sorry to hear about the shoulder! I hope you heal up well and I look forward to seeing more footage of your riding and Billy's running in the near future! LOL.
Wow you can ride
What's the travel on your fork? Hope you're healing up quick!
Hi Del - the travel on my fork is 140-160mm. I think 150mm is the minimum you'd want to go with the geometry the way it is. I'm back on the bike now, riding a little tentatively, but having fun!
That's some hard riding trail on a mullet lots of dew on the ground. You doing great.
Thanks Enrique!
Did they replace the cracked frame for you?
Trail dog)))
Nice ride! I’m new to mountain biking 2 months now. Been hitting delta watershed and thornhill. I will be try fromme this week on my hardtail! Bobsled and maybe expresso? Can you recommend another run besides expresso? Thank you
I think Leopard and Crinkum Crankum are pretty fun as well, but Bobsled is a great place to start on Fromme. Have fun!
Bobsled, Another Roadside Attraction and then Expresso would be the way to go. High School League and John Deer on Seymour are great options too. Have fun!
Nice video bro 😃👍 subbed, keep having fun 🤟🔥
Thanks! Will do!
This is a great video, thanks!
Thanks Chapman!
was this originally a 29er or 27.5 frame?
This frame is designed as a 29er frame that can take 27.5+ tires. I usually run the 29s and the 27.5+ in the wet winter, but mullet has been fun!
@@whatgoesup8972 great! Ill have something to model my build soon
Great control; congratulation!
Thank you! Cheers!
First minute of the video … he went into a shop and they sold him a Stan’s rim for the “strongest wheel you can get” …. They did you dirty. Trolling aside, just got the same frame and I’m super excited to build it out. Great video!
Garet, now that you mention it, I did crack the rear rim on the Stan's not too long after getting it! They replaced it on warranty, so not so bad! Have fun with the bike - it's a blast!
Amazing trails! Hardtail rocks! 🤘🏼
You know it!
Never seen anyone hit that rock roll to ladder on Pennzoil before! I checked it out the other week and it's quite intimidating and awkward from the top. Looks like it sees very little traffic.
First of all, thanks for watching to the end! Yeah, that rock roll is the original line on Pennzoil and if you know how to line it up before you get to it, no problem, it's just that you can't really see the ladder as you come up to it. I guess there's a good reason they built the newer line!
I feel like everyone likes lower Oilcan. and if they don't they should because it rules!
I definitely like it (not so much on this ride in the video), but I feel like on a day when you basically have to wait in line to ride Expresso, no one is on Lower Oilcan...
But....but I like both of those...
I usually do too - just that day it was kicking my butt!
Do you still ride the hard tail chromag? Great video
Thanks Abraham, I am still on the Chromag. Since I've been off the bike for 2 months now though I've been exploring the idea of a different ride - I might do a video about the process of looking.
Here's one from a busy day this spring when I was able to ride a bike! I'm still recovering from a dislocated shoulder, but hopefully back on the bike soon. The first trail punished me, the second makes you feel like a rockstar!
@Concrete Head Not quite back yet, this is a video from the archive... but hopefully in a couple of weeks or so. I'm not on Instragrunt, but I'll check it out, same with Joy of Bike... thanks!
The heat has been insane! Fortunately now it has cooled off (25 degrees or so), but it was over 40 C for several days. I was okay with not being able to ride cause of the shoulder. I got out for a first ride yesterday though and I think I can get back to regular riding now. Trails are super dusty though. This climate change is for real! Hope you're getting some good riding in!
@Concrete Head in North Vancouver, not bad. Very dry here, but the smoke has been flowing east. I just got back from the interior of the province and it was thick smoke almost all the way across. Full on fires raging on the mountain sides as we drove by - pretty freaky.
@Concrete Head hey! I haven't been on the bike much lately, but am able to physically now, so I'm looking forward to getting a lot of riding in in the next few months. I'll start putting out the vids too again. Hope all is well with you too!
Did Chromag replace that broken frame for you?
They did not, but I bought the bike second hand (barely used), so not from them or from a bike shop, so I don't hold that against them. They did give me a deal on a new frame (which brought it down to the price of a Kona or Norco frame!).
@@whatgoesup8972 I'm a bit surprised at how short the Chromag warranty is!
@@mybadvideos I know - kind of makes you wonder what the Chromag premium cost gets you...
Great Video. The bottom part of that one trail was not Hardtail friendly.,,,. I ride my Samurai on a lot of trails like that here on the South Island..... hope your ankles weren’t too sore! Lol.... In your videos I would know you are riding a Hardtail by the sound.... that pinging off the tops of ricks that make a bit of a hollow sound....
Thanks Doug - and yes, the second half of that top trail is not a fun one on the hard tail, but it has it's moments! That hollow pinging sound off rocks definitely seems to be characteristic of the steel Chromags!
Nice video! I really like the narration like a guide to the trail.
Thanks Dave. I'm looking forward to getting out and doing some more. I'm on the sidelines for a while with an injury, but back this summer!
It’s been a few months since I took the ol’ Rootdown down those trails. I’ve been getting distracted by the full suspension bike! Great vid.
Thanks! I think if I had a full suspension, the Rootdown wouldn't see much action on these trails!
Lovely trail that mate... :D
It's got it's appeal, but it can bite ya too! Hope the riding is going well for you.
How do you like that Rootdown on north shore trails? Looking at one now and haven't ridden up there in years either.
The Rootdown is great for the North Shore trails. The few flow trails that are here are amazing on the bike, the gnarlier old school rooty rocky trails are fun too, but definitely rougher on the hardtail. If you can maintain speed and hop over a lot of the gnarly bits, that certainly helps smooth out the terrain, but that also takes a lot more effort! My legs are definitely more tired descending on a hardtail, but the Rootdown is built for exactly this stuff.
Would you like to go riding sometime?
Great trail that mate. And I know I say it every time... But I do love the way the trails are built there... Nice vid!! :D
Thanks 👍
Was going to say.. been a bit since I've seen puddles on John Deer😜 ... Finding traction on the pebbles has been scary fun lately. 🤘 Rest up. Get well.
Thanks! I imagine it was getting strangely dry on the trails during that bit of summer. Kind of glad the rain is back for a bit!
Nice riding! What tires are you running? I've got DHR 2.4's front and rear on my Rootdown but the sharp/rocky terrain here in the Okanagan is telling me to consider 2.6's. Ever tried?
Hi Carver, I have 2.3s DHR and DHF right now, but I do also have some 27.5+ that are 2.8. I have one of those on the back at the moment, so the bike is set up mullet-style and I'm really liking it. I generally go for as thick a tire as is reasonable to run! I'm not super concerned with rolling speed, or speed in general, but I love the grip and planted feel from a fatter tire. I'll probably go with 2.4s next time I buy 29" tires. I remember the days when 2.8 or wider was the norm. Pretty sure I had 3" wide tires on a Norco VPS Launch years ago!
Some nice flow in there mate 👌 best wishes for your recovery
Thanks for the good wishes!
Inspired by this, I took my 40-yr old self and Rootdown down Boundary this week. Wow, I’ve got a while to go before cleaning this one.
Nice! It's a tricky one, but at the same time, taking all of the features on their own, theoretically do-able!
@@whatgoesup8972 How are you making out towards your goal ?
@@mbelfry had a bit of a set back in the spring with a dislocated and broken shoulder - so now that we're into the rainy season and I'm getting back on the bike, I'm a little shy on the double blacks, but hopefully a clean run down Boundary is not out of the realm of possibility yet!
Good luck on a speedy recovery, hope you're back on the bike soon, pumping out amazing content as usual!
I hope so too! Thanks!
Hope you are ok! Nice and gnarly trail! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I will be - thanks! Looking forward to getting back on this trail.
I've gotta dip into the archives a little for some videos as I'll be out of commission due to a dislocated shoulder, so no riding for a while for me, but here's an exploratory trip down a trail I'd like to explore more. Enjoy!
Best wishes from the ADK's of NY for a speedy recovery! Great content btw! I ride a steel Kona Big Honzo myself and love being on a hardtail. I prefer it as a 27.5+ single speed but trying it out with 29's and gears for a bit. Likely keep it as a 29 SS for the simplicity. Thanks for bringing us along on your rides!
Thanks for the good wishes and the feedback! Nice bike setup - I just put my name down for a Kona Honzo ESD. My current bike is too small (and obviously doesn't work right since I fell off it!) and the Honzo has long been on my wish list. I don't think I could handle the single speed though!
Thanks for the recommendation. Not rad moves unfortunately - mind wandered for a moment on a trail I've ridden 100 times and down I went. Hopefully no surgery needed. I'm just waiting for results from a CT scan.
Good idea for more content - I'm actually in the market for a new bike, so thoughts on the process could be good and I'd love to hear people's feedback.
@@whatgoesup8972 The ESD looks like it would be a lot of fun. SS is a blast once you get your gearing dialed in for where you're riding. Simple and light. I highly recommend giving it a go.
