El Reno-Piedmont: The Lost EF5 Tornado
On May 24, 2011, just days after the tornado disaster in Joplin, another potent severe weather event took place. This time in the state of Oklahoma. Many violent tornadoes tore through the state, but one stands out amongst all of the them, and maybe even against all the tornadoes of recorded history.

    I thought the name Cookeville seemed familiar I live in Tennessee and have since I was 1 (I only moved from north California) I'm terrified of tornadoes but even though Tennessee gets them I have never seen them in real life because my part has a lot of mountains and they've formed but they can't get over them

    I carefully looked at that sidewalk picture for a while. There is an abnormal white spot that might be surveyor marking, but it could also be an impact point. If there was an impact point then we have mass as well as wind speed to transfer the energy into sideways motion on the sidewalk. That would definitely adjust the calculations and require a lower wind speed. The bush sitting there looking like it needs a drink but it's otherwise fine also makes me almost look for pinpoint impact instead of broad force winds. Fascinating analysis and really, I'm in your camp that the sidewalk (not to mention the missing sil plates) is likely ef5 damage indication. I feel like after the tremendous storms of 2011 and Moore in 2013 there might be a hesitancy to declare ef5 because putting this storm in the same category as Joplin and others just doesn't feel equitable. Love your videos and the effort you put into that messy equation. Thank you.

    • @fortysixghouls
      @fortysixghouls Před 22 hodinami

      Probably, but the cost of a reinforced concrete home is a lot more expensive than just rebuilding. It wouldn’t be tornado-proof either, you’d still have weak spots like the windows and roof, and any serious tornado will just blow those out. One EF5 shifted a *hospital* 5 inches off of it’s foundation in some areas, and they had to demolish the building and rebuild it.

I find them absolutely fascinating with how you break them down into how much power is needed to cause certain kinds of damage using math which I absolutely hate and suck at lol but how you are able to explain things the way you do is amazing!!! I am absolutely intrigued by it 😊 and I truly appreciate your brain 😂 It seems so effortless for you… I think you should probably work for the team that goes out to survey and rate tornado damage. Is it NWS? Sorry, I guess I’m just rambling… I’m so happy to see you back!!! Can’t wait for more uploads and I hope you are doing well since your move 😊

    There was a model I saw on WHO13 in Des Moines the night b4 the derecho that showed a storm structure that followed a similar line to what happened. The meteorologist didn't really react to that model as she was giving the forecast. I took notice and I had the weather on the next day as I worked from home and watched it develop. I took pictures until I was blown off my front stoop by a high wind gust. Luckily my place ended up ok.

    I saw the aftermath of the August 2020 Derecho storm that hit Cedar Rapids Iowa. They say 140 mph winds in Cedar Rapids and the path was eventually 1000 miles long. We drove through about a half hour later. The interstate was closed so we took a side road next to it. Semis flipped in all directions. Many must have been airborne. One trailer was crushed down in the middle like a soda pop can that had been stepped on. Unbelievable!! Wind is so awful for Semis. There are many CZcams videos of it. "Only" 4 people reported killed. Could have been so much worse. Prayers to those who were hurt or lost their lives.

    Derecho's are happening regularly this season. They are not a regular summer thing. Majority never even heard of a Derecho until the Illinois storm four years ago. Every season is getting more intense. At the same time, weather stations are becoming less reliable. Example, chick gets paid to visit national parks while people get hit by record storms.

    There's also a hybrid derecho. That's one that has both progressive and serial characteristics. I've been to weather symposiums and heard SPC forecasters speak, and I remember them saying summer when there's potential for derechos are stressful for them. By the way, how bad was this derecho in the Chicago area? I see part of it crossed Lake Michigan and made it into lower Michigan.

  • @ILoveOldTWC
    @ILoveOldTWC Před 7 dny

    Weather doesn't take a break from pandemics and/or lockdowns. Morris is in Grundy County, on state highway 47, which was a good way to travel to the western Chicago suburbs, without having the traffic in the Chicago Metro to contend with. Have been through there. You mention nearby Plainfield, 30 years to the day a few weeks later, of the F5 tornado. The SPC has put High Risks out for expected derechos, and not necessarily a tornado outbreak.
