I missed this one live. Very good conversation. Personally I felt the guests did not have a solid explanation as to why “sex work” would no longer exist under a socialist society. How would a socialist society handle an individual that wanted to commodify their body? IMO relying completely on the materialist argument in this instance is not sufficient. Human socialization and psychology (not the easiest things to empirically study) will inevitably play a part in an individuals desire to take part in “sex work”.

One thing I've noticed in my short time on this wet marble is how the perceived image of a regular or 'normal' middle-class lifestyle has changed over the years. I could be wrong, but I get the distinct impression that the way the 'average' American life or household is portrayed has moved from a typical middle-class, middle-income lifestyle in the 70's and 80's, to a more upper-middle or lower-upper class lifestyle. Houses are bigger, cars are pricier, furnishings are nicer...the new normal, or at least the one they want you to think of, is now markedly above the medium American income. It's this odd sort of gaslighting where they (corps, wealthy?) kind of want you to believe that 60-80% percentile life is now somehow the normal average American lifestyle, when in reality it's far from average.

This is all fine and nice, but when are you gonna ring up Dan Larson and do an actual MotU episode for Pop Life?

During the 2019 Canadian Federal election I had become very disenchanted with the direction of the New Democratic Party, which was becoming increasingly Centrist and incrementally neoliberal over decades. I had been considering voting for the Green Party of Canada, but they had adopted the slogan, "Neither Right nor Left, but Forward!" What was worse was how clueless the leader, Elizabeth May, was about the slogan, how dated and past its sell by date it was in the modern political climate. And in Canada we have no Federal Left Wing parties: we have three Centrist parties who are, to varying degrees, neoliberal incrementalists and two full bore Right Wing parties.
