Huge red flag to avoid a used GPU

I wanted to talk about another thing I always watch out for and avoid on the used market. I guess there would be two exceptions I forgot to mention. If a seller advertises the item as "as is, untested" but says they will refund if the item does not work, which really isn't a thing, cause then it would not be "as is" but I digress. The other exception is when you are buying large lots of items f...

There are a few quality of life things to make game testing a little more viable, particularly substantially more storage than a pleb like me could ever have afforded in 2009, but the gaming potential is the same. I am going to be doing many upgrades over the coming weeks to this build, this is just kinda testing the rough ...

Ok, clearly this video needs a TLDR. 1. Putting a computer part in a known static rich environment with no protection is a bad idea, even though more often than not there is no harm 2. Putting a computer part in a known static rich environment with no protection does not guarantee the part will be broken 3. I am not running around with my hair on fire screaming about parts definitely being broken if you dont wear an anti static wrist strap every time you interact with your computer. 4. If a seller cannot be trusted to engage in THE MOST BASIC static protection best practices that take seconds to accomplish, why should I trust to buy from them? 5. Every situational is unique, for less experienced buyers I suggest sticking with sellers who appear to be putting in the absolute most basic levels of effort.
I just got an amazing deal on a pc because some dad wanted his son to stop gaming so he sold his pc with the gpu ontop of the power supply ,and it was very dusty , i got a 1660super with an i59600k 16gb of ram ,256 gb ssd all for 175€ ,listing was 250€ but the dad wanted to get rid of it fast and didn't know much about computers, so please anyone if you turn a blind eye like this guy on what could be your best find , remember, pepole who don't know what they have will either under or overprice whatever they are selling.
Im not really certain what you are trying to say. Are you saying if people listen to me they wont get a good deal?
I see your point. When reselling, I try to ship any cards/PCBs in an anti-static bag as cheap insurance, since I don't want to deal with bs return claims over ESD. (Will even state as much in the listing.) If someone's asking $300+ for a GPU, they can most definitely afford to put it in an anti-static bag to ship it out. (Just reuse the bag that their new GPU came in, that's literally a free and simple option.) On the other hand, I've bought several components that were otherwise pictured in ways that suggested good ESD practices were observed, but then were just tossed in a box completely naked except for bubble wrap/packing paper. They still worked, but I was understandably upset by it.
Im getting haters that are either not watching the video, or intentionally mischaracterizing what I said in the video. I basically stated what you did.I clearly stated, the static bag is no guarantee, its possible the one in the static bag is the bad part, or that the non bagged part is fine... its more about a seller showing some basic effort to engage in what is generally considered best practice when handling electronics.. and as you agreed, im not suggesting sellers need to do something expensive... just some very basic effort, that is all im suggesting buyers look for here.
@@dragonsystems5973 Comprehension is worryingly getting worse and worse with folks online, it's not just you. Don't listen to them.
Hey, when I am selling PC parts on ebay, I always have them laid out on an anti static bag in my photos, and as you mention, I will avoid sellers who have their PC parts laid out on a carpet. I also give good details to the components I am selling and make sure I give enough information that any buyer knows that I can be trusted. Anyone not showing a basic knowledge of anti static procedure and not giving any credible information on a listing is someone I wont deal with.
I am pretty sure the only people who have a problem with what I said here are dealers who dont bag their shit... I just looked on eBay, its $20(or less) for a 100 pack of anti static bags that can fit large GPUs, thats like twenty cents or less per sale... like, why is that soo hard, ya know? And to be honest, this video was made mostly for local market buyers, but you, as an eBay seller know that eBays buyer protection is soo tilted against sellers, if you can do some tiny little thing like static bag your components that might cut down on the possibility of a return, thats a win for you right?
You know, if you "wanna see" the second photo, i'll provide. That will cost you extra, up to 2 times the one you show in first photo. I will also provide all the receipts etc. But believe me, the stuff i sell second hand is either cheap but without proper package, or you get an item in great condition, will all the papers, packed in static bag and the box it came with, but i'll charge you at least 80% current market price. And you know what? People are still buying it.
Ahhhh soo we get to the truth. You, and probably all the others leaving dislikes and negative comments don't have anything productive to add, you are just mad because you feel I called you out personally, because you don't engage in the absolute most basic of good practices. Next time, just be honest and up front
@@dragonsystems5973 What? What "basic of good practices"? You want better quality and service? Pay for it. You want to cut phe price - i may have something in stock for you. Everything i sell is of personal use, will be shown with proof it's wirking and you will go to my place to get it there without package if you're a cheap ass.
Also, if I read between the lines properly, you are insinuating that I am saying the cards need their original packaging, that WAS NOT what I said. I did comment that the photo I showed was a very good example. I stick to what I have said to like 4 other people. Why would you buy from a seller who can't be bothered to engage in 3 seconds of basic good practices? Why is that soo hard for you? If you deal regularly, you have bags.. why not just do it right???
@@dragonsystems5973 Because it depends. And no, you're reading me wrong. I meant what i can provide the near mint condition for almost retail price or absolutely barebone item for cheap, but there may and will be anything in between. But any package i have to add will also add to cost, because package costs money, time to buy it costs money, time to package it costs money. All i said was: you want better service - you pay better money.
@ThereWasNoFreeName Buddy, your argument has literally no weight. I just looked, you can get 100 anti static bags large enough for a GPU for $20 or less... that's if you buy them new in bulk... if you ate an electronics dealer, we both know you have more of the things than you know what to do with... twenty cents or less bro!!!!! Bag your shit!! Really. This is good for you too, it will give your buyers more added confidence... far more than twenty cents worth
LTT made a video about this and that yes its safe practice but its really unlikely for this to happened. Ive had parts sitting around for even months to years and still work.
How many of these comments do I have to answer? Can you not be bothered to watch the whole 4 minute video??? Really?? I went into all of this. ALL OF IT. I clearly stated this isn't something to be paranoid about... I also made it clear the biggest issue is whether you want to trust a seller who can't be bothered to engage in the most basic of good practices. But if you want to buy from buyers who can't even take the time to put 3080 in a freaking static bag... more power to y
In my 20+ years of experience i haven't even once crossed a MB or GPU killed by static... I've seen dropped, overvolted, overheated, dead from "old age", smashed by hammer, destroyed by post service, damaged by cat piss, cooked by sun , fried by blowing on a fan too hard without disconnecting or blocking it first, overcooked in oven, undercooked in oven etc... But never killed by static.
Ok, great, so once again, just like the last idiot, you clearly did not watch the whole video. My main point is, if you are buying electronics sight unseen off the local market, it's not a good sign if the seller can't be bothered to engage in the most basic of good practices...
Why are you giving advice to my viewers after clearly stating you don't deal in this stuff??? You literally have zero subject matter knowledge. I'm trying to arm my viewers with the best info to make a good decision. Bro, I buy bulk boxes of GPUs, pallet loads of computers, I know good practices and bad ones
@@dragonsystems5973 If you buy it and sell it for profit - good for you. I'm not a reseller, and i only do builds for people and not selling parts. GCs and MBs is a big no-no for me and i will never give and advice to buy used or refurbished one. Will they listen or not - it's up to them.
@@dragonsystems5973 You may want to reconsider the tone of your response. You can have the best information in the world but if you can't communicate without coming across overly abrasive you will not get any subscribers.
@@notmatt5864 Soo... now you are saying im right... buttttt... im abrasive??? like which is it? I think from my tone and from the content of the video, im not here to court electronics dealers, im trying to give solid advice to the guy who just wants to pick up a used 3070 for $250 off craigslist, im talking about the red flags I personally look for. I think you are just mad that I am using the knowledge I gained as a professional dealer for 15 years in a way that might give buyers a look behind the curtain.
Lol. This feels very "I'm big brained" but it's really not. I'd like to know what you think on the back of the card is sensitive enough to be fried by a tiny static shock. That is also VERY unlikely to happen.
You CLEARLY did not watch the whole video and just wanted to feel superior telling some stupid little idiot youtuber how he doesn't know what he us talking about. 1. I clearly stated this IS NOT a catch all. I even addressed cards with backplate. 2. I CLEARLY STATED this biggest issue here is under these circumstances a seller is clearly demonstrating that they don't give a crap enough to engage in basic good practices with regards to storage and packaging of computer hardware. 3. I clearly stated that though it is not perfect, in my 15 YEARS!! of working with hardware, my incidence of unexplained failure went down dramatically once I started engaging in these basic best practices. Now, I am always happy to have a discussion, but if this is how you start, I'll throw it right back at you... unlike a lot of channels, I'm trying to actually contribute the things I've learned doing this full time, professionally, since 2007
@@dragonsystems5973 Wow... Butt hurt much? And you said you started dealing with anti static bags. I watched that part. I can tell you right now, the shipping process will produce way more static than the carpet. They often irradiate packages etc. It's also far more likely on only cards with liquid caps to stick out more and be knocked loose by being placed on something that could pull it off. On top of that, the people placing it in a static bag are more than likely to be handling the card more gently in general. What is happening is confirmation bias. You're assuming an issue's cause without any testing to understand if that's actually the issue. Did you test the boards to see if there was a dead short? Or check if there was missing or loose components? Or did you just toss it because it didn't work? Trust me "bro" XD I know what I'm talking about too. You sound very opinionated and full of yourself. And I should know. I've looked in a mirror.
@foxman8344 let's just make it simple. Why are new gpus ALWAYS shipped in some kind of static protection?? Second, I don't care about shipping, this video was about best practices for buying off the local market. As I have said over and over and over... and over, this is more about the generaly failure of most sellers to engage in basic good practices. You want to buy 3080s from sellers who don't give a shit, more power to you. I'm attempting to impart to my viewers knowledge on what best practices are. You are right, a million things COULD happen, and seeing that a seller gives enough crap to engage in known best practices gives me a lot more faith they did the other things right too. Furthermore... I love how guys like you jump to insulting me as being emotionally weak when I push back on you.
Hey, this video came out at perfect timing. I just bought a refurbished gpu, 3070ti asus tuf. I need your opinions. It came from Amazon renewed , but distribution by “Computer Headquarters” they also sell on new egg. I just need your opinion. My gpu came in the package. I opened it and instead of there being the original 3070ti box. I got like a bubble bag, not bubble wrap. But like a cushioned lined bubble bag, hard to explain. And under that was a static bag like in the vid. I i opened it to look at the gpu. Looks great. But it has scratches, not that I noticed on the components. Just on the cosmetic parts like just the paint. Should I be worried??? They have a lot more good reviews than bad ones and is 4.7 stars on Newegg. I bought it off Amazon but seller is on Newegg. I don’t have my full build yet so I can’t test. All my parts are coming brand new besides this gpu.
It really depends, there is no deffinite answer. If the deal was really good and the card tests good I'd probably keep it... HOWEVER if you are one of those people who is going to wrestle with yourself about potential invisible long term damage I'd probably just return it. Also if the deal really wasn't that good I'd also return it for the piece of mind... 3070s certainly are not the rare thing they once where. Also do be aware, sometimes an antistatic will be pink or blue etc, not necessarily the classic shiny silvery.
@@dragonsystems5973 it was a good deal, it was 390$. I’m gonna test it once all my parts come, gpu z is good? I’m not worried about the scratches if there cosmetic. And any gpu can fail regardless of used or new. And it has 90 day warranty so I’ll be fine
@mkeefe4248 doesn't GPU Z just give you the stats on the card? Personally I like to actually use it... I'd recommend you load up Cyberpunk and run that for a few hours. I did just glance quickly at eBay and that is on the high side, however, it is true generally 30 days is warranty on ebay, so an extra $50 - $70 may be worth it for 90 days... at $390 though I really think you should take a look a the newer 4070
Never buy refurbished parts, so far all the refurbs i've seen either were half working or dead in less than a year, and there is either no warranty or very short one for refurbished items. That's also the reason i don't deal with second hand cards - they may want to sell poorly refurbished one and say they bought it new.
@@ThereWasNoFreeName I’ve heard people say it’s good, I mean I’m not getting it off a random person, it’s from a actual company that specializes in that. They have a 4.5 to 5 star rating on Newegg,Amazon,eBay. It seems good so far besides the scratches on the design, but they are minor. I’ll just have to wait till my whole other parts get here to test it.

I am putting together an X58 build right now that I am going to set up with Windows 7 for cards like this. Actual market value on these cards is like $100-$150, but from the perspective of a normal user, I can only value them at the absolute cheapest price I can obtain a GTX 1080 for, its less gaming capable, but the unique form factor and low power draw give it some extra points beyond pure raw performance. I did have some display issues, particularly with trying to capture video with a capture, and I chatted with another user that had some odd monitor issues as well, it didnt seem too bad, but there was deffinitely some fun and games going on with it. but yeah, its pretty cool at the price you picked it up for.
