Thanks giving from the Deschutes River
Thanks for the fire updates Mark. Hate to see it happening, but thankful to get updates from you. Let’s hope this one gets under control and no lives, structures, homes, livestocks etc are lost. Got lucky with the long bend fire and best thoughts to all involved and close to this one.
You might have been lucky fishing at Badger Creek the other day. I hope that whole drainage doesn't get burnt out.!!!
Be safe where's the cut to footy?
You will have to check out my other shorts. The video editor on my phone wouldn't let me add clips together. Sorry for the inconvience.
Be safe out there
Dropping floats I support you because you are not to far and I like watching you learn. Great job on the videos you rock. This is killing me though. Small creeks like that size 18 p Adam's or smaller, no dropper ever on small creek like that. And cast right into the fast stuff and let the fly do it's thing. Those fish are so small and will eat really any size 18 to 24. I promise you will have a lot funner. Grab a 2 wt and you in bizz. O ya might as well fish 7 x just to make it that more intense. Good stuff brother I'll continue to watch I have not missed a video yet.
Thanks partner ! I'm so glad that the fire didn't make it to that area . That's about the average size of them years ago from that area. But it's a beautiful area.!! We actually used to catch a little bit larger ones in the irrigation ditches.
Love what your doing keep it up
It's been fun making the videos definitely adds a level of difficulty to a fishing outing.
Beautiful fish! It was over 50 years ago. But we used to fish up by Bonnie crossing and in the local Irrigation ditches. When we weren't hunting Squirrels ! Thank you for all the coverage of the fire!
No problem on the coverage. I'm glad no structures were lost.
When is the best time of year to fish it for steelhead
Late fall to early spring. It's an all native run no hatchery fish so it's catch and release only.
Hay my fishing brother...how about bonnie crossing area ? I have a long history of the area! Praying for everyone .Thank you!
The creek at bonnie crossing has been on my mind. I have never fished it, but I imagine there are some nice little fish in there. I will have to give it a shot.
Thx for update! Best thoughts for homeowners and my favorite river canyon
Wish ya could get some rain over there. Always gets windy not good.
What a great on-point vid that just shows everything
I'm glad you liked it. I tried to get some closer shots. However, I was also trying to be respectful of the effort that was being made and not get in the way.
If we all used hydrogen powered cars & trucks instead of fossil fuels then it would rain more often and stop forest fires and help dray areas to produce vegetation!
Damn I had a cabin over there 😊
Holy shit! Stay safe man!!
Maupin is safe! it was definitely too close for comfort.
Yo what’s up man you helped me the other day we came in when my oil cap came off my car😂 We ended up finding it on the road near beaver tail got so lucky
I remember that I'm glad it worked out.
Wow Al never shows me his secret spots! Great finding your videos here. Tight lines!
@@dolanpatj Al doesn't have any secret spots.....LOL
The way you say Madras 🤌🏻
Thanks for the info! I was there a bit ago and I got a 20 pounder
Awesome!! a 20 pounder is a nice catch for the Lower D.
Nice fishing trip! Glad you got to see that herd of sheep! I've seen a bunch down stream from Sherar's. I was just in Maupin Saturday to go to the book talk about the railroad in the library with my parents. Still need to stop by your store some day!
I enjoy seeing the different wildlife along the river. Yes, swing by some time and I get you pointed in the right direction on hooking some fish on the Deschutes.
awesome fishing man, great to see the dog with you aswell :D
I'm glad you liked it. I checked out your channel and I'll have to pick your brain about doing under water video. I have been thinking about getting some underwater footage on the Deschutes River.
@@droppin-floats thanks for stopping by my channel hehe, yeah for real you should try to get some underwater footage, its really exciting to see whats lurking down there while fishing
Great video You make fishing look so easy!
It comes with practice. I'm pretty spoiled living 5 minutes from the Deschutes River.
Place a Oregon sport fishing reg magazine on the truck dash and see what happens if a "next time" with ODFW.
I'll give it a shot.
@@droppin-floats I went a little crazy with my fishing van (carries my kayak). fishing stickers etc. I am not a van life person and the van is not a work mans van full of tools. ODFW has ignored me for past 2 1/2 years. Maybe more fishing stickers on the truck?.... signage info about your store in Maupin, CZcams channel info. Frustrating I know, but you can't complaint your way to success with government. Good luck!
That was a wonderful week of weather! Nice catch!
It was a beautiful week. And fishing on the Lower Deschutes is always fun.
How do you put those floats on the line? I have never used one of those. I agree if you are going to be a trash the river bank stay in Portland or where ever you are from and trash your on house!
Hey John, check out my Tackle talk with Mark video. At the 1:50 mark I show you how to rig up my float setup. It's two sections of silicone tubing threaded on the line.
Ok saw the video. Understand how to use the different set ups. How do you put the float on your line, that is what I need to learn. Thanks!
@@johnculbertson1963 The clear tubing threaded on the lines stretches over the tips of the float. So the tubing holds the float on.
Nice test! How is the road down there? Is the washboard bad?
The washboard is typically bad down on the lower section below buck hollow. I was up on the pavement stretch near Maupin.
could I kindly ask that you remove your gloves before handling fish, especially native fish that are protected like Bull trout? There has been many studies that show the harm of handling fish with gloves and how it removes the protective slime the fish produce, especially wool gloves. Nitrile gloves are a good alternative to wear over your wool gloves if you rather not remove them. Here is a helpful video that shows the impact of wearing gloves --> czcams.com/video/a8VETvLLa0o/video.html&ab_channel=SeanDolan
Hey, Thank you for the comment. I will try and remove my gloves going forward when handling fish.
@@droppin-floats thank you for understanding, wasn't trying to be a troll, just love our local fisheries and want to keep them healthy 🙂
Junky Truck Discrimination! LOL! Nice catch!
Junky Truck Discrimination is real!! I was stopped again in March for a total of three license checks in 2024.
Oh my! That’s crazy!
Great vid! Your statement was correct, Candle Creek Campground is down river from Lower Bridge. That is the furthest North you can go on the west side of the Metolius without getting onto Warms Springs Reservation. The gate you drove to by Lower Bridge Campground is as far north as you can get on the east side without walking in. Candle Creek is on the west side of the Metolius and down river. The river travels north. You can walk from that gate to Candle Creek and carefully cross at Candle Creek and fish back up the other side as well. If you are ever around there again and want to fly fish, I'd be happy to show you around. I live in Sisters. I help instruct a class on fly rod building in our Sisters Go Fish Club starting in March if interested as well. Everything I fish the Metolius with are carbon rods I've built in the club.
Hey, thank you for the information. I may take you up on the rod building that is something I have always wanted to do.
Got a question for you. Actually looking for a suggestion, I have fished for steelhead in Alaska but not here in Oregon. Now that I live here I need a suggestion on what rod, reel etc that I should buy. Fly rod, spinner etc. Can you help a retired 72 year old man out!
The most versatile all around steelhead rod would be a 8ft 6in spinning or bait casting. Performance of the two is equal it comes down to your reel style preference. I would shoot for a 8-12lb or 6-15lb medium action in either style. What style of steelheading are you looking to do?
I caught all my steelhead in alaska with fly rods. I just bught a 10 wt fly rod that I am going to try out. Only used spinner/bait casters for salmon and on the ocean. I think your style sounds great. Looks like you don't have to be an Orvis fly casting champion to fish.@@droppin-floats
Also I would like to thank you for responding to my questions.
@@johnculbertson1963 I'm one of the lonely center pin fishermen in Oregon. It's in a world between fly fishing and conventional fishing.
Nice fishing! I've been binge watching some of your videos today! I wish I could spend more time on the Deschutes, but my knees are so bad it's hard to get to the good holes.
Glad you like them! I know a handful of sports that are easy access. That way you can get on the river.
Nice spot!
Yes it was!
Neat spot! I haven't been up that road, but my parents were up there recently and said it was a good drive too.
The Deschutes access road has some great scenery and wildlife. I go for drives on the regular.
So cool that you found your old pick up! The fishing trips sound great!
I'm definitely spoiled having the river so close.
Nice little hike. I wonder what the history of the road is.
Thanks its a great little spot.
Hi, new sub here! I live a few miles from Sherars Bridge. Just moved back a couple years ago. Sounds like you live in Maupin.
Yes, I live in Maupin a stones throw away from the Deschutes River.
Great stuff! Definetly tough fishing conditions, but it should improve over the next week!
The river should be in great shape in a week or so. However, it may take a longer for the section below White River. But I couldn't of asked for a better February day on the river.
Love these videos and the river reports! Next time I'm in town, I'll stop by the store and introduce myself!
Do that I would like to meet you.
I know this is your site, but language is important as children and ladies are watching. Now that is said, what do you have on your rod that looks like a digital watch? Also I wish you showed us your flies as you use them. It would help us rookies very much/ Thank You!
You have a point on the language. I will try and do better in future videos. The electronic device on my rod is a shutter control for a go pro camera. It allows me to start and stop my camera from the rod. I will do a better job showcasing the fly's I'm using in future videos. In this video I was using a size 6 jig leech hook, tungsten 7/32 bead pinned and balanced. Red egg pattern out front, transitioning to a typical marabou steelhead tail, and a black body.
Very cool, I've always loved the middle D! Definitely looks like a fantastic day out there! New sub here!
Welcome to the channel. That was my first trip to the Middle D. It's very different from what I'm used to on the Lower D near Maupin. I'm looking forward to getting back there.
@@droppin-floats I love the maupin area too, I'm hoping to make a trek that direction soon for some trout and whitefish action!
May be good to mention , known rattle snake country in the summer , been raftng since 89 , been thru white horse many times . 🎉
Great Idea! I will definitely mention rattle snakes in future videos.
Worst feeling ever 😂
Yes, Totally!!
Like your videos. Please could you take a moment to talk about you set up, fly rod weight, line, flies etc. Thank you!
Hi John, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. As far as setup I'm an oddball on the West Coast. I'm Centerpin fishing in this video, think of it as an advanced method of indicator nymphing. I'm using a 12'6 6-12lb (it's a little heavy for trout fishing)Raven centerpin rod paired with their helix centerpin reel. As far as line I'm using 8lb floating monofilament. The flies I found success with that day were a black rubber legs and 3.8g tg pink bead pupa pattern. The float was a 6.2g Raven fast medium.
I’ll have to check out the scenic trail and drop in at your store next time I visit Maupin. You are so kind for sharing!
No problem! Make sure and subscribe so you don't miss future episodes. See you in Maupin sometime Mark 👍.
@@droppin-floatsOh I’m subscribed a couple of months back 😊
ODFW is worthless, the only thing for sure is their PERS pension.
I don't know if you can keep those white fish on the Deschutes but I smoke those guys up and they are amazing
I rarely keep anything. But I have heard white fish is pretty good. Any tips on preparation/cooking?
Brown sugar and salt brine for a day then a 4hr little smoke at 200-225. Wrap in paper towels or brown bag and let cool
No limit on white fish in Oregon according to ODFW👍
Nice footage. I'm a fly fisherman and I'd never seen a centerpin setup before so I had to look it up. Very interesting method. Nice spot. I'll have to head out there one of these days. Subscribed.
I'm glad you enjoyed the footage, it was a wet and cold day that's for sure. The Centerpin is not very common on the West Coast. You should definitely get out there and try Steelhead falls there was lots of good water I didn't get to.
Maybe I'll make that my next stop. I've been going out to the crooked the last few weeks with good success. Time to test some new water.
@@matstaley388 That's funny I have been thinking of heading out to the Crooked. I live in Maupin so I fish the Lower Deschutes a lot but lately I have been focusing on trying new water.
It's more or less deserted this time of year. Perfect for anti-social fishing!
I first fished Steelhead Falls years ago, before Crooked River Ranch, fat redsides were quite common back then. We knew of an older gentleman who knew the river very well and regularly caught big browns below the falls. It’s a tough stretch to fish. Thanks for the video.
Fishing is ALWAYS good…Catching can be a little sketchy sometimes. Nice video.
Fishing is always good. I did go out the following week and found a steelhead.
I just moved to the Dalles area from Alaska. I appreciate your openness with information on the area. Following.
No problem, I'm trying to be open and upfront with everything I do. If you ever come out to the Lower D look me up.
Call me naive. But what is that fishing rod and reel setup?
It's a Raven RPX Centerpin Rod and Raven Matrix XL reel.
