How long does it take to build your sailboat?
Building your own boat, or having a one-off built for you, is a dream for many. From Porto Santo, Madeira, we share our thoughts on the amount of hours it takes to build your own sailboat.
We built a 47 foot (actually 49;-) monohull from scratch 30 years ago. It was the flagship of the Dutch designer Van De Stadt, the Samoa, in glassfiber woodcore version. We launched her in 1998 and called her Faidate, Italian for DIY. That's why the Schionning Arrow 1500 performance catamaran that we recently got built (there are advantages of getting older;-) is called Faidapiu, loosely translated 'made by many'.
While a reasonable estimate of the expenses can be made, build hours are far more difficult to predict. We have not met anyone who used less hours than expected. Nor did we. So for those of you thinking about embarking on your dream, here are our thoughts on the matter for whatever they are worth ;-)

      Hi Mark. Good job! That's 7 years in total which is the same thing we used for building Faidate (part time after work), a slightly longer boat but a monohull! Good luck with the fairing, not the nicest of jobs but it has to be done! The final fairing and painting was actually one of the very few things we got professionally done, they are far more efficient to getting it exactly right. Time flies so soon you will be sailing too.

      Thank you! The video might give a wrong perspective. The pole is actually great as a support for exiting the boat, climbing the step or when we pull fish up. And it also became the flag post. So in the end it's a nice addition and we aren't sad not to have found a standard radar mount on the spreaders, but it would have saved work! The 'emergency' steering is the actual steering: the tillers.

      @@FaidapiuSY Does that equal 49.05 feet? At first I was going to build either the Arrow 1500 or the G-Force 1500 but then decided to get a Cyber 48 which is a Tim Mumby design after watching Sailing Life on Jupiter videos. The time to build a Schionning takes a lot more time than an aluminum Cyber 48 and that's one of the biggest reasons that I decided to change my mind. It would be supper cool if Schionning came out with an aluminum version. I have spoken to them about it. What are the major differences between the Arrow and the G-Force. I believe that the G-Force has more carbon and is a bit more rounded but besides that, what would be the differences? I guess you can make the Arrow with carbon. Also, which boat would win in a race?

    • @FaidapiuSY
      @FaidapiuSY Před měsícem

      @@robertlaird6746 Yep 49 feet! The difference between the G-Force and the Arrow is probably best explained by Schionning but yes for sure there are no curves in the Arrow (it's a panel construction) and that's why build hours are less. I wouldn't bet that an alumunium boat takes less hours to build, quite on the contrary actually. Looking forward to follow the build!

    Enjoy the region, it's one of the best cruising grounds anywhere. It's a shame you didn't have more time for Ilha Grande. Lot's to see. Don't miss Saco do Mamanguá while your in the Paraty region. :)

      Thank you and yes we will definitely be back since we have nothing else to do for the next two months :-) We loved Ilha Grande when we were here 20 years ago, in particular Sitio Forte and the friends we made there. Currently we are very surprised by the extremely low number of sailing boats around, both Brazilians and foreigners.
