Summary: Kleiner does an experiment with gnomes and a headcrab to see if headcrabs can be tricked with human-like objects. The experiment is succesful, but then the headcrab somehow takes control of the gnome and attacks him. Looks like Kleiner didn't think ahead :/

By the post mortem image, the Perpetrator most likely killed him. Like you said, Mark looks like he was mauled by a bear, and if he shot himself, I don't think his mouth would look like it was torn out, there's also the fact that Alternates have been shown to also use brute force to kill their victims since Vol 2. (A.K.A Jonah's Death)
