No Single Thing Abides (Cowan) with photos by Clyde Butcher (taken from a poem by Lucretius.
Back in 1992 I wrote this song because someone asked me to write a song for the "Save the Everglades" campaign at that time. I used a poem by the Roman philosopher and poet Lucretius (99 BC - 55 BC). This poem was taken from his most famous work "The Nature of Things", which happens to be the only complete work of art ever discovered thus far.
Needless to say the Everglades project never took off for me, the song and video (a different video than this) were never used or seen.
So since this year marks 30 years since this song was written I thought I would make a new video using the excellent "Everglades" photos of Clyde Butcher. He has a new book out on the "Everglades" that is for sale, go to his website: clydebutcher.com for more info.

A "day in the life" of the Beatles. On March 31st, 1964 the Beatles recorded seven songs for the BBC radio show "Saturday Club" which aired on April 4th, 1964. In this video I picked "You Can't Do That" from the seven songs they performed mainly because it was the newest song performed that day, and because it features a cowbell which you never hear in other live versions of the song. It's great to hear John's voice recorded louder than Paul's when they're doing harmonies, because usually, on the records, Paul's higher voice tends to drown John's out. A+ for George's spot-on harmonies on All My Loving. The guy could do everything.

Looking at the stills, the bare-bones studio. No glamor there, just four working lads practicing their craft; outside was still gritty, poor Liverpool, providing few means for getting ahead. Hard to see how that studio environment could inspire any music, any hope of a livlihood, it was only the dreams and imaginations of the Four that propelled them into world music.

Interesting when you listen to the early audition tapes George sang a lot of leads he was close to an equal third in vocals then when John and Paul started recording their stuff, and naturally singing it, George had to write his own songs just to have presence on the albums. I love every single song George recorded as a Beatle not a bum tune in the bunch. One of my favorite Beatlemania-era songs is All My Loving for the part where George comes in and sings duet with Paul.

During the Playboy Interviews he noted that it was a "throwaway song," while the interview noted that the controversial lyric line was from an Elvis Presley song (Baby Let's Play House). It goes. . .
