Pretty entertaining, reading all these ancient comments where people are arguing over whether this was ‘punk’ or not. You always see this kind of thing with the Damned, and it’s always farcical and a complete waste of time to argue over. Seriously, _who cares_ if it’s punk or not? The reason that the Damned have remained my favorite band for something like 44 years is because they have always defied categorization and labels. Truth be told, only the Brian James era (‘76-‘77) could truly be considered straight punk rock and nothing else. First album only, and maybe a few songs from the second album. After that they moved on, got off the sinking ship and became something else entirely. They became their own unique thing, and to me that’s when the rubber hit the road and they got a million times more interesting. Punk was never meant to last for more than about a year or two. It was a quick and sudden jolt, meant to wake people up (rudely) from their hazy prog-rock comas and shake up the status quo. Clean the slate, so to speak… and make room for new sounds and new ideas… and that’s exactly what the Damned gave us from ‘79-forward. To this day, it’s almost impossible to categorize an album like Machine Gun Etiquette. It has a lot of different ingredients, all tied together with the old punk spirit of “no rules, no codes”. Still, people act like it’s their moral obligation to put them in some silly little box. Same thing applies with Strawberries. Good luck accurately slapping a label on this stuff. Yes, the punk spirit is very much alive and well, but musically this is light years ahead of the old “1-2-3-GO!” approach of standard punk… and that’s what gives it timeless appeal.

I spent more than 20 years listening to the 1982 version, and I still prefer it. This one is good but it's not my tune, hahaha.

I'll be 59 in a couple days and I still listen to this song now and then. It's brilliant. I love the production and arrangements on this version. When you listen to the original and other folksy covers of it, all the main parts are there, but this version really tightens up everything (including that meandering acoustic part that follows each chorus on all the other versions) and adds all kinds of really cool layers for dramatic effect. Easily one of the best covers ever! Love it.

One of my strongest memories of the past, was this time ~1994 when I was in my young 20's, and was in love with this girl. I had scraped together enough money to buy an old 84 Mitsubishi Montero. We decided to go to Death Valley in it, and were listening to this song on the way. I thought it was amazing, and it was, a privilege to be alive at that very moment and place in time. Surreal.

No wonder why in 1993 I wanted so bad a les Paul Custom like Roman Jugg's in this video. I found one in a shop that looked exactly the same. Too bad, it was quite a bit expensive for me, so I ended up with a Studio instead.

This song was written in 1967 by a psychedelic rock group called LOVE. Their version is excellent & I first heard it by the Damned back in the 80s. Damn good song all around!!
