James Carter is the new John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Charles Lloyd, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, King Curtis, Junior Walker, and Michael Brecker - all in one. 🔥 Sam Newsome is master of all that extraneous feats - gimmicks, if you will.
Lenny is a Gentle Man. Love this guy. Hope to meet him one day. Maybe have a saxophone lesson, together. Beautiful. Would that be cool or what !
Makes me think of Earl Bostic, a guy who knew the sax inside out
Where is the rest please?
will someone please answer the phone
imagine with all your other commitments, music business details, and everything else in the music business consumes you as a musician and still taking the time to go and speak to a high school class? "Always say yes!" is a compelling message for anyone. Thank you for posting these clinics. They offered great insight into a very thoughtful and profound musician. When you see him dancing on stage with Tower of Power in the early days, it's pure bliss and you hear it when he talks about music.
wonderful class!thanks for sharing !
Love the alto clarinet sound,👍
What is the vest across his chest as he is introducing his song?
It is a strap to hold saxaphaphones to make it less of a strain when standing up and playing.
He makes Clarinet Cool. I switched from Clarinet to Tenor Sax in school band, because...because Clarinet was so geeky. Btw, Lenny Pickett is Jeff Garlin's brother from another mother..
Didn't know that clarinet was a percussion instrument...
a .130 tip opening and 3.5 traditional Vandoren. Thats a big setup!
I love how he’s such a realist. Work hard, there are no tricks. The most accomplished creative people mostly just out work everyone else.
He should play for money !
GEEEEZUs
There comes a time when something is used tastefully and it has a huge impact. Then there is something that is overdone or over used and it's just annoying and boring. Lenny tends to overdue stuff. Lay back on the high notes and listen to Miles. Sometimes less is more.
Definitely a matter of opinion. Also to tell an artist to play like someone else defeats the whole purpose.
Jr. Walker used to play like _him_ here.

Genius. Why didn't anyone tell that idiot (camera man ) to mute his mike or turn away when sniffing?
Omg why stop there!
That looks like my Maui Xaphoon. p.s. This is a pretty solid vid.

Great callout to Bert Wilson...RIP my old teacher I miss you
2nd that. You were fortunate to cross paths with B. Wilson. His tribute to Jim Pepper "For Jim Pepper" which is posted on youtube is one soulful piece played in living room.
Because of Bert I got to meet and play and hang with some of the world's best musicians, including Lenny, and especially Bert Wilson himself.. Someone has posted DEDICATED TO FRIENDS AND MOTHERS on CZcams with the studio version of "For Jim Pepper." with Zitro on drums and singing a chant that Pepper taught him.
Hi Lenny your brother Brad used to work for me in Austin. He had many fine things to say about you.
hope they all appreciated who was talking to them. one of the legends.
You could absolutely convince me that the Eb clarinet was a synth if I wasn't watching him play it.
way back when i was even a more ignorant punk kid than i am today, like back in 1980, really, I am not making that up, i got the 'Waiting for Columbus' tape by Little Feat (this is way before CDs). there is a lot of great music on that recording, but one tune, Mercenary Territory, stands out for its blow-your-mind sax solo that leaves you wondering how a human being could be capable of making music like that. it turns out it is this humble, brilliant man, Lenny Pickett. i only recently put two-and-two together. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for posting this!
Practising? Hell no! It is all part of the journey and just as much fun as playing a tune. First time Learning Baritone and Tenor sax......all fab!
he s a real monster on them reeds
Alto clarinet wut?!
Lenny is truly one of a kind. The guy is a musical genius. Thanks for sharing this!
I love SNL. Bless Lenny Picket for being my idol.
Love Lenny Pickett. He's my favorite sax player.
Me too; takes me to SNL and Sesame Street.
Me encanta como toca Lenny !!!!
Thanks for sharing these videos. Great stuff.
very very talented sax/musicion player....
Lenny Pickett, prime example of not needing a formal education to be an amazing muscian. Don't mean to belittle formal education, but I think informal mentorship and hard work is the way to go.
codeword: _"Mentorship"_ . I'd add proper to that phrase.
@@mcmikah Can you recommend a youtube video on getting my head out of my ass? What do I use, grill tongs?? Thanks for tuning in.
I love how he plays the Eb clarinet!
Scott Lang's icebucket challenge will be funny as hell.
Thanks for sharing - what a GREAT opportunity for these students. Everyone seemed to appreciate him - LP is one of the all-time best! Too bad he didn't dance or talk about TOP much.
Great insight but I'm surprised nobody asked him about his setup...
jay douglas go to the clinic 4 of 5
That is amazing that you were able to privide your students with this experience! Wonderful.
and your band never ceases to amaze me, Alex! tubas for life!
Holy cow haha
