    Few people realise this was the race that - in retrospect - effectively decided the 79 WDC. Remember that in this year the drivers could only count their best 4 results from each half of the season. So had Villeneuve not run out of fuel just 200 metres from the finish he would have collected his 4 points and after the next race the first half of the season would have finished with Jody on 30 points and Gilles on 24. In the second half of the season Gilles outscored Jody by 6 points, meaning they would have tied on 51pts apiece. They also had 3 wins each, but Gilles would have won the WDC due to scoring more 2nds than Jody. Talk about fine margins. How much fuel was needed for 200 metres? 1 litre? 2 litres? Forza Gilles. Forza Jody.

      @richardhall206 Před 5 měsíci

      In an interview, Jody said that in the race Gilles was changing gears with his foot still on the throttle, which he hadn't done in practice and from which the fuel load calculations were made.

    • @theladyofmotorsport
      @theladyofmotorsport Před rokem

      I assume that full broadcasting wasn't quite common in the '60s. Also, if races were broadcasted in full, they existed only in TV archives and may have been lost, as videorecorders did not exist back in the days. A lot of races from '70s and '80s races are on youtube because people recorded them from tv.

    I was at this race. In fact, I was at the inaugural race in September 1975, which was an F-5000 race. I still have the programs for both races. Over the years I went to 3 F1 races at Long Beach and about a dozen Champ Car races there. I won't go there for Indy Car though. I won't even watch it on TV.

I was able to pickup one of the cars tire/wheel combination with one hand (as a young boy) and was astonished as to how lightweight the combination was. Yes! That unexplained editing cut /splice. I guess the editors thought Clark overtaking was too "Common" to include. Or this being '65, it wasn't on camera. At the time I was a little kid. So it's on YT I see my childhood hero Jim Clark actually driving. He was so smooth , surprising even himself, consistently faster than anyone else.

    "The clutch went offline and the gear lever came off in lap 2!!" What a guy. I was too young to see him race but his co-commentary was truly special, Walker and Stewart nailed it in their tributes. I still maintain their analysis and especially Hunt's, was a big factor in me falling love with F1 back in the day.

      Kimi raikonen more than makes up, also Hamilton has a big impact on how F1 is seen today, you cant deny that. Alonso is not driving however he hasnt denied coming back when McLaren get their shit together. Also, Vettel, Verstappen, etc, all have their own character. F1 still is and will always be exciting

      In those days, due to so many differing demands on the small number of TV channels available, they were only willing to spend a tiny amount of time following motor racing, so they would cut away after the start and rejoin the race near the end, having in the meanwhile shown something else, usually another sports event.
