    A bit too ‘glutinous’, and at times self-conscious at making ‘beautiful sound’, Sutherland’s interpretation . Whereas Maria delivers it with a hair raising urgency, a primordial inner pathos, a sharp cutting fatality, above all a focused expression, an economy of expression without aiming to project the voice but the true character, that is a living Leonora and not an opera singer. Drama is not for Sutherland. She is best outside those roles that demand sharp dramatic intuition. Just compare with Callas’ performance at Palais Garnier. The voice, the eyes, those hands!

    I was today years old when I found out that Danny Kaye (and by extension Sylvia Fine) and Adam Sandler had used this music to inspire one of their comedic routines. Kaye and Fine used this as basis for an operatic sequence in the movie Wonder Man, and Sandler used parts of the melody for an Opera Man sketch (which also starred Jon Lovitz and Glenn Close!).

    The best. I know this is not some original input in regards to this particular role; but Leonora belongs to La Stupenda & La Divina. They both actually added to the role, very much like what they managed w/ Lucia & Norma.

This is wonderful because the opera singers knew their craft... Not like the microphones the new mob use and just scream.... Wished they would listen to the noise they are making... Maybe if the listen to this they may learn how to sing.... However they are now only in it for the money... I have even given up going only listen to the old greats... Thank god for recording of these wonderful VOICES that don't need to scream to they just open their mouths and out comes the wonderful sounds.....

    Devo dire che l'immensa Joan Sutherland in molte parti ha superato perfino Maria, * inoltre aveva una struttura degli armonici che la rendeva impareggiabile! * Callas.

      Maybe not for Pavarotti, but there are many sopranos and mezzos as good as Sutherland today. E.g. Damrau, DiDonato, Bartoli

      Her voice was enormous at this stage of her career. She would not have been able to sing these low notes so well when she was younger.

    I LOVE Sutherland, and always have. But, this is boring compared to Callas or Ponselle.

    • @ThomasDawkins88
      @ThomasDawkins88 Před 4 lety

      Part of it is the conducting, and part of it Sutherland not being the actress that the role demands. There's no tautness in the "Quel suon, quelle preci" section, and that makes it seem very perfunctory.

      Pavarotti is one of the great tenors alongside Mario del Monaco, Gigli, Caruso, and Bjorling. Sutherland is great too!

      He was - at the start of his career, but took the money too much, later on. Tenore di grazia, lyric. Manrico no role for him, really. Smallish voice, projected well, but not that technically supple. Emotionally vacuous. Lovely tone. Not in the same league as Bjorling, or the others at all.
