    Ahah I loved your cat's interjections 😂💛 So cute! Gee, I can relate so much to the "I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just trying to find something that works" feeling... I'm very much in that same mode, albeit at a different stage of the writing process (first draft). I love seeing other writer's process ^^ Thank you for sharing it with us! And best of luck with the revisions.

      @StephMorgan_ Před 5 dny

      Yeah Mr Kitty has a lot to say 😅 haha, I have no idea if that feeling ever goes away, I definitely had it through my first draft process too but it worked out in the end! It feels like hiking down a trail alone thinking "help Im lost!" but its still a trail so you just keep going until you come out the other end 🥲 Writing is so solitary, I love hearing how similar (and sometimes wildly different) other people's processes are. Good luck on your draft, thanks for watching!

    That bit at the start of Lady MacBeth where she says it’s period accurate spelling is nonsense, I checked every language I could think of, plus I’m Scottish so they just looked off. The spellings of the time would’ve used Gaelic language conventions, so Duncan, for example, would be Donnchadh. He was called Donnchadh mac Crìonain, Duncan, son of Crinan. The audiobook drove me up the wall. She kept pronouncing things wrongly, she said Glamm-is all the way through, it’s pronounced Glams (you not knowing that is understandable, a professional narrator is not). Also the entire book made me beyond furious, I only listened to it because I had to write about it. It was xenophobic, misogynistic and the history and geography was so bad I couldn’t tell you when or where it’s set. I found the witches to be the one of the most insulting parts of the book. One of them is called Gruoch. In real life Macbeth’s queen was called Gruoch. So she took a real queen of Scotland and made her into a witch.

    • @StephMorgan_
      @StephMorgan_ Před 5 dny

      ooh this is so interesting to hear your perspective on the language! Using Gaelic conventions at the time would make a lot of sense. That's so disappointing, particularly with the audiobook narration! Audiobook narrators messing up pronunciation is one of my biggest pet peevs. The more i read about it, the more I wonder if the book was originally inteded as an independent story taking inspiration from Macbeth and a Lais by Marie de France called Guigemar, particularly with the romance and the setting by the sea. There's no way to know, but I think marketing could have done a bit better too. I also didn't know Gruoch was a real queen! That makes me want to learn a lot more about the original story and history involved in Macbeth. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this novel but I really appreciate your comments and hearing your experience and knowledge! ☺

    For the eyes thing why sometimes there is only one or none, I think it depends on the distance the character is drawn like they are far away so its hard to make out their eyes, But also when close up I've always just thought it was due to lighting in the world of the manga/anime so it hides the eyes if its really dark or what not, And sometimes its just done for artistic sake to make a moment more dramatic especially if the character is wearing glasses.

    Your theory can also be applied to playing role-playing games like dungeons and dragons or Baldur’s Gate 3. There is even a term some role players use called “synthetic memories”. It describes the vividly imagined scenarios you envision for your character and his past, his time with his parents for example, his hometown, core memories he might have. Those synthetic memories are not real and the role-play knows this but nevertheless they create real emotion. The more you play your character in game, interacting with other players, the more real and significant those memories become. You grief for your imaginary mother, and you rage against the thought of your imaginary sister being kidnapped. It is quite a strange experience when you feel that for the first time. 😅

    If you liked Junji Ito, I really recommend Uzumaki and Tomie, they’re the rare instances where the whole book is one, finished story (unlike most of his works which are story collections), with Tomie you can still feel how they’re seperate stories with each chapter but the main character and the overall plot is still pretty consistent (also I believe Tomie is one of his earlier works so the beginning chapters, while still looking pretty good, are nowhere near the quality of later chapters and works)

    I LOVED Project Hail Mary!! I think that may have a bit more of what you are looking for.. still that humor but it is emotional. It made me happy and sad then happy again lol. I was entertained the whole way through and it's normally hard for me to fully focus on audiobooks.. so another reason why I loved it. And if you love physics/math/engineering/chemistry etc you should like the scientific breakdowns. I highly recommend the audio for PHM - you will get the most out of it that way especially in regards to a certain character... one of my all-time favorite characters. I won't say anymore than that because nobody should be spoiled for it 😊 I actually just got the audio and physical copy of The Martian, on my TBR this month so haven't read it yet but I did see the movie in theaters back when it first came out. From what I remember I would say I like PHM better but I'm still going to read The Martian because I want to know the original book version... and I absolutely adore SciFi! I say give the audible PHM a shot 😄

I loved that you picked My Dark Vanessa as one of your favorites. I just read that one and it was so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. 💔

    Of course Stephen King would pick one of his own books! Legend. The lack of children/middle grade books over the entiring publishing industry this year is abismal. I know they don't sell millions but not having some of the biggest books in fantasy/scifi in the last 20 years on this list is WEIRD. You'd think at the very least they would put in the biggest and best selling books of each genre AT LEAST.

    Anime usually is made as an promotion of the manga that's why they are so many, also right now we are having a lot of anime being made, so yeah if it is popular there's a high change it has an anime. Shonen jump as it name says is limited to the shonen demoragrafic which means it is directed to young men and boys if you want some recommendations on girls manga I recommend the channel Colleen's Manga Recs

    Getting old if you were born in the 90's? I'm from the late 80's!!! Ouch 😂 Super interesting video. I'd need to give more thought to my list, such a hard question! I think great books (I say great, because I don't think it's possible to get to an objective list of "best books", it's just to personal) are well-executed (intelligent writing - not necessarily beautiful, although I do love that, but the tone and style need to make sense for that particular story and maybe beautiful isn't it -, rich, believable characters, an engaging plot, strong world-building if relevant to the story), but it also needs to make the readers feel like reading that book changed them somehow, and it needs a type of quality that would make it pass the test of time, something that people would still be reading in 10, 40, 80 years... That last one is much harder to describe though!

    • @StephMorgan_
      @StephMorgan_ Před měsícem

      hahah - oh no it's a definite joke! my husband is also born in the 80s and was like "EXCUSE ME?!" 😅 Yes! it is such a difficult thing to narrow it down. That's a fantastic way of defining 'great' - I especially agree with your point about tone!

    Thanks for an excellent critique of this list Steph! It's funny to me that out of all these lists that come out, this NYT one got so much attention! Sadly, the bias on genre fiction is insane in the industry, especially in the big awards, look at the Booker Prize or the Women's Prize for Fiction... I am a strong believer that any book can be valuable, it is not bound by genre. So it is disappointing to continue seeing this from people who are meant to be experts in their field. I do appreciate some of the choices that were more original, even though already very appreciated by readers generally, like Piranesi or 1Q84. I'd define 'best' based on a scale that comprises: - Representative for the time period in terms of style of writing, style, themes - Impact on the reader - Contribution to popular culture at the time Some of my standouts from the 21st century so far (in no particular order, that is, as you say, 'an overwhelming exercise'!): Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn Babel - R.F. Kuang Piranesi - Susanna Clarke Pachinko - Min Jin Lee 1Q84 - Haruki Murakami The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson Snow - Orhan Pamuk The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins I Am China - Xiaolu Guo A Little Life - Hanya Yanagihara

    • @StephMorgan_
      @StephMorgan_ Před měsícem

      Yeah, I agree, although I love literary as well, it's a shame we don't have more appreciation for genre. I love your way of defining 'best' - representative of the time period is an interesting factor to consider, but it really makes sense! Your list has some good ones as well - I really wanted to put Larsson's series on my list too, it really had a huge impact on me and is just a really great series in general. I haven't heard of 'I am China' or 'Snow' before but I'll have to check them out! Thanks for watching and your thoughtful comment 😊
