promo from the 1980 movie "times square". kind of like highschool musical with profanity. got this years ago when i worked at a record store. little wonder we werent allowed to play it. this is a prime example of what hollywood & the misic industry thought punk was.

I still say "They went to Betson's", just said it and no one had any idea what I was talking about so I had to look it up and show them.
This movie and sound track was very influential to me back when it came out. It was one of my first "punk" records - along with Devo, the first two X records, The Decline of Western Civilization sound track, the first Clash and Pretenders records. My then friends weren't into it; I was secretly gay, living in Michigan in 1980 - I was lucky that I was able to move away (to WDC.)

The best Betsons Furniture commercial was the one where he's in a packed Veterans Stadium, hits the ball and everyone disappears. He says: "Hey! Where did everybody go?!" And the announcer says: "They went to Betsons Furniture...". It'd be great if anyone could possibly find it and put it up on CZcams.

OMG, someone finally uploaded a good copy of a Betson's commercial! My life is complete! To this day, whenever I hear someone say something like, "Where did everybody go?" This song has been running around my memory ever since the mid 1980's. That's why I'm watching it now, as I just woke up this morning with this song in my head..
I remember this commercial, but I never did listen to WYSP. Only Philly station I was into back then during my childhood was WUSL, Power 99. I neither knew nor cared who Howard Stern was, and indeed, I've never really had a chance to listen to his show when I DID learn about him. But I did become a fan of his, strictly through the two books he wrote.

Then you come along and leave a comment 5 days ago and now here I am, commenting to your comment. I have a few questions for you. How did you happen to come across this commercial? Especially if you aren't a fan of Howard's radio show? For me, I have been listening to old Stern show compilations on CZcams, and some kind soul uploaded a huge Sam Kinison on Stern compilation. There's a part where Sam calls in to the show because he's angry at the way the commercial turned out. So naturally I had to look that commercial up. And now here we are. Was this a Philly commercial, just for them?
Indeed it was. WYSP was a Philly rock station. And being from southern New Jersey, most of our TV stations were Philly stations. So I actually saw this commercial quite a bit. Now, I DID know about his main competition in Philly, John DeBella, but NOT because of his radio show. I was a little kid, and DeBella was always doing spots on local Philly TV channel 29, during the afternoon cartoon drive.
Well, thanks for replying. I'm from South western PA. East coast represent! I was a kid during this time too, so I didn't hear any of this whilst it was taking place. I gotta say, about that DeBella thing, I think it's downright evil the way Howard treated him. I know they were in some sort of radio feud, but I also know that Howard started it and DeBella just reacted to that. I can't watch a person be treated so inhumanely and not have a gut reaction to it. I don't know what kind of person DeBella was, but I know he didn't deserve the loss of his fan base, a divorce, and then subsequently having his ex- wife go on to Stern's show to be humiliated with a joke date night. That all happened, and then years later, DeBella comes on groveling all buddy buddy with Stern. Like everything was ok. But that guy's career and life up to that point was totally ruined by Howard. Seems like a pretty shitty thing to do to a guy.
Late night Philly TV at it's best, when ad rates were cheap.
They showed these Betson's commercials at all times of the day on all the UHF stations.

Does anyone know what is the scene with the song "Grinding Halt" -by The Cure-? It's on the soundtrack but I haven't found it in the movie.
About sixteen minutes and nineteen seconds into the film. It's at the end of the scene where Johnny gives the "Storytime Quote of the Day", after he talks he starts the record and you hear it in the background for about four seconds!
