Serenade in Blue

The beautiful song "Serenade in Blue" was written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon for the film Orchestra Wives in 1942. It was introduced in the film by Lynn Bari with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. However Bari's voice was dubbed by Pat Friday. This arrangement is by Steve Allen. I play it on the slow side but I kind of like it. I might change my mind down the road when I come back to it. Many th...

One For My Baby

Song no. 15 From My Living Room-One For My Baby. This is one of the greatest torch songs in the literature with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was originally written for Fred Astaire in 1943 for the film The Sky's the Limit. The movie wasn't very good (as Margaret Whiting told me personally)Fred Astaire plays a tap dancing test pilot. The song went on to become one ...

They Can't Take That Away From Me From My Living Room song number 14. This was one of the last songs that the Gershwins wrote together. George was nominated posthumously for an Academy Award for best song of 1937. However the song lost to Sweet Leilani made popular by Bing Crosby. They Can't Take That Away From Me was written for Astaire for the film Shall We Dance in 1937. The song was reused ...

Pure Imagination-Song Number 12 From My Living Room. I have always loved this song written for Gene Wilder for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. As a side note the Daddy Long Legs piece you see behind the piano was the original art work that went up in front of the camera for the opening titles of that film with Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. I'll save...

Love Walked In (Trans. by Percy Grainger) song number 11 From My Living Room. I haven't performed this song for almost 20 years but it brought back a really wonderful memory for me and that is why I've gone back to it after all these years. Today would have been my father's 96th Birthday. He used to love to listen to me practice this piece and really enjoyed listening to the tremolos. It gave h...

People-Song number 9 From My Living Room. Today is my 58th Birthday. Although I consider everyday to be my Birthday I'm grateful for all my friends and fellow lovers of music. I thought it would be appropriate to record the gorgeous song People from Funny Girl by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. I'm most grateful for the greatest blessing in my life Jan Glazier.

Sabre Dance- (Trans. by Oscar Levant).Song number 10 From My Living Room. I discovered the sheet music of this transcription at an antique mall several years ago. Levant was featured playing his transcription in the 1949 film "The Barkleys of Broadway." This performance was recorded during a recent livestream concert.

Song number eight From My Living Room-Body and Soul. This arrangement by Cy Walter who was called the Park Avenue Art Tatum is brilliant on many levels. Cy had his own personal stamp all over his arrangements. I had never heard his recordings before I learned this stylization. When I finally heard his recording on Liberty Records I discovered the interpretation was very different then the way t...

One of the best renditions
Great opportunity to explore a significant picture from Old Hollywood. I think that interviewers should always speak less than the interviewee, however. It felt as though you were interrupting him unnecessarily.
@@bond4836 true. It was my first interview and I learned.
This was amazing keep us the great work❤
This is just so good. Best instrumental rendition on YT. Why just 77 likes? Ridiculous.

Levant was like a drunk Sinatra.
Bravo maestro
He's playing Rhapsody in Blue as he was a friend of George Gershwin.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
...a musical and artistic delight! Thank you so much with regards from Germany!
Many thanks!
Great interview! This is true Hollywood Gold
Loulie Jean Norman was the voice on the Star Trek theme.
Such emotional, haunting, otherworldly music...The definition of breathtaking
Beautiful! You've never lost the magic sir!
Happy for you Richard. And your playing is exquisite.
Bravo!
Lovely,wonderful news!
Beautiful! And Happy Birthday!
He was a First Class Man! Good looking too.
The movie has a wonderful look. Thanks in large part to Gene Allen. Thanks for this interview.
If i could travel in time, I'd try to get into the same sanitarium as Oscar. Or, I'd sing so good i could actually get a gig with him.
I met her through my late father who taught languages to singers at Manhattan School of Music. So nice to hear about her history especially Geraldine Farrar’s encouragement to help Camilla Williams in the role of Madame Butterfly, her recording of Porgy and Bess , etc Love 💕 her!❣️
Respect
The choreographer whose work is being spoofed in "Choreography" is Jack Cole. Thank you for sharing this interview!
Vic Damone AND Sammy Cahn in the same shot!!
Probably the best duet ever.
Two favorites in one place. The young Joshua; handsome, brilliant and always modest. His parents did well.
fabulous.
I know this is a pretty old film now but, I have to say that I am humbled and honored to have met Andy on several occasions. He was living in NJ and he played in my dads Salsa band. I watched him at my house listen to a song on a vinyl record one time. He then proceeded to play the piano part with the band on the first try. I was a young kid at the time but I was amazed. My dad still talks about him to this day. Unbelievable talent...RIP Andy
Oscar's emotional stability is no better than the stability of this video! lol
Brilliant. Sammy was besties with Groucho.
bravo
as usual the interviewer interrupts far too much. still this was very interesting.
It was the first interview I never did. You are right but please understand I was doing the best I could.
Beautiful!
If only we could tell how full the ashtray was.
From what year?
I think 1958
Fantastic. What year was this TV interview?
I always thought Joe looked the most like Judy.
Weirdly, Gloria would divorce him the year after this was filmed. The "ring-a-ding-ding" that Sammy heard was the sound of Gloria cashing out.
She must have taken him to the cleaners. A was real, egomaniac but wrote some great lyrics/
Thanks so much. No need to strain your eyes. Audio is fine. Turn up the volume and pretend it is live radio. Levant is brilliant.

Tedious and pretentious…self-absorbed and difficult to watch
Only to a short attention span putz like you...

great piece, played with great skill
You were lucky to know him, Richard. Pure class!
