Introducing My Ham Radio Elmer Happy Birthday Ted At 101 Years Old
A World War II veteran who celebrated his 101st birthday has many stories to share and was the man who got me interested in ham radio in 1976 when I was 12 years old. Happy Birthday Ted!

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy Před 6 dny

      Try around a 1k ohm to start with, depends a little on the LED, that should work but if it is not very bright go down to a 680 ohm or so, it is not very critical usually.

    Question: I was given a 6m beam, new in box about 3 years ago. If I'm lucky, I'll have about an hour to turn on the radios throughout the month. Is it worth the time and money to put up the 6m beam?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy Před 10 dny

      Probably not since 6 meters can be a band that you may hear nothing for a while and then all of a sudden there can be good conditions but not most of the time. You have to pay attention to the band to find the openings at the right time and need to monitor or check it out often to find the good conditions much more than the time you will be able to monitor. I wish I could say yes but that is kind of how that band works. 73

    Interestingly enough, you can hear that phenomenon on lower HF bands such as 20 meters. Been a long time since I've heard the impact of an aurora on HF/VHF signals. Thanks for the demo!

    I went to do the mod and noticed that you said you replaced c58. Was that with a dielectric? The video seems to show noting was replaced after the .1uf disk was removed. Am I missing something. I know the video is old but do you have the linked document as it appears the link is now bad. I can't seem to find this mod anywhere.

    I have a poor mans solar system that took me years to build. Anyway when I turn my inverter on wirelessly you can forget about listening to any AM radio in the house. My battery bank and inverter cabinet is about 25 feet from the house and there is no moving that. I have yet to figure out how to stop this racket when using solar and wanting to listen to AM in the evenings. My entire battery bank cabinet is enclosed in aluminum over plywood. You would think that would help. Anyway,,,,,,,,,anyone in here with some ideas would be welcomed. Thanks.

    So, I just got a BAOFENG UV5R from another homesteader here locally. We are just listening and learning at the moment. We got them to use only in emergencies, or SHTF. So, I am 100% new, no idea of laws, regulations, how to talk, what not to say, what to say etc. So, just trying to get introduced at the most basic levels. What is the point in talking to someone in Russia, or Ukraine, or Spain? Is it just for fun? I don't really see the practical use in it. Is there not supposed to be any use, just a fun thing? Just trying to get an understanding of why people do this, and what all the excitement is about. It's sort of like walking into a room full of people who don't speak your language, trying to figure out what everyone is saying, and why.

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy Před měsícem

      The best place to start is at arrl dot org online, that is the American Radio Relay League and here you will find a lot of information if you are new. Also there are a lot of good channels on CZcams here if you start out searching things like new to ham radio or how to get started in ham radio. Being able to communicate in times of disasters when phones do not work is a big thing when the need arises and helping with public service events in your own area, you can search out a local ham radio club also on that site I mentioned. Talking to far away places and meeting other hams is also fun. Sometimes for long conversations and sometimes just to see where your signal is going. Best of luck and look into it a little more to see if it is of interest or not for you. It is a public service first and a hobby second but hams can still communicate when other modes fail. Best of luck to you!

      @@RadioHamGuy Thanks for the reply. HAM is for sure ALL new to me. Ask me about cars, trucks, homesteading or engineering, I got you, but most electronic things have always been a mystery to me. Its a gap in knowledge i'd like to fill. Maybe radio is a way to do it. Do people start radio shows on HAM, like video PODcasts on youtube, or is it just for public service comms? Ive been told I have a great radio voice.
