Living in Thailand: Happiness is a Mindset & Not a Destination
Many people are surprised that moving to another country to live doesn't always result in the transition they might have hoped for.
If you lead a life that doesn't align with your vision and values in your home country, then moving to pastures new doesn't always end up being the dream move many people envisage.
In this video, I detail the mistakes people often make when moving to a new country and what you need to do to ensure you don't make the same mistakes.

    I am 35 years old and left the UK around 8 years ago. I moved to New Zealand and managed to get a permanent residency visa, so I can come-and-go as I wish. I am a fully qualified and experienced brewer/winemaker. I have very recently come back to see my parents and work a vintage while over here. ... I was considering staying but having seen what this place has become while I have been away that is not happening barring a disaster in the family. I will book a flight home after the vintage is done, spend Christmas with my parents since I've come all this way. After that, in the new year... I'm off again. This country has fallen, and no government can fix it. If you are young and able it is time to be brave and venture out into the world.

    These comments so strange. British people are saying they are not happy in UK. To people outside in Asia, Africa UK is seen as a top wealthy country, a world power and strong currency and a great economy. In other countries the currency has no meaning c just paper be wise it can devalue so fast but Uk currency so strong and solid. At Uk kings colination we saw beautiful clothes, gold and diamond crowns, so many noblemen in expensive robes and all the public people looking healthy . No one begging on street or starving. Everyone has shoes. Everyone can read . Good education and famous universities. It is also great empire with owning ailands in every part of world. It builds big ships and has very nice roads. No mud streets . It has nice bus and train with no people sitting on top of bus. British people nice and folo law. British police don’t beat you and take your money. You have hospitals. You have all those things but you complaint. I do not understand. Most place people very afraid of leaders and have to give bribe for everything. Everyone poor. Leader rich. Uk has Clean water. No food poisoning. People live long life not die disease in young age. You have every what other contry people dream. And you cry and say you don’t like Uk? I don’t understand. Other people dream of Uk but you don’t like such nice contry. I don’t understand. I think rich contry Uk people very spoiled. 😂

    • @mrdamianking
      @mrdamianking Před 23 dny

      I think the pertinent theme of your comment is that you don’t understand. What have Africa and Asia got to do with my complaining? As for people walking around in diamond crowns and expensive robes, healthy people on the street, and no one begging or starving….when did you last visit the U.K. or see the news? Maybe you’ve not seen the recent national unrest. Everyone can read? Incorrect Famous universities? The ones 99% of people in the UK don’t have access to, and if they could, most likely couldn’t afford, I kind of see where you’re coming from in theory, but in reality, it makes absolutely no sense at all. Let me put it to you in another way. If you had 100 million pounds in the bank and the government stole 99 million, you’d undoubtedly be angry, right? Yet you’ll still be a millionaire. Yet someone who only has 10 pounds in the bank could say, why are you angry? You’re a millionaire. Their comment has zero relevance.

My wife and I been wanting to emigrate for a while now (NZ, Aus, Spain) I’m just working on a shift from ‘conventional work’ into the online world and seeing what I can do to be free. (Obviously with kids) I have to try and work out what’s best with regards to a location, online entrepreneurship etc but I’m going to give it a really good go. Currently a mental health crisis support worker and life coach, maybe I can do something there online, maybe I just flip the script and try something completely new, but may I send you a thank you for inspiring people to look outside of the ‘norm’ I enjoy empowering people and I like hearing others doing it too! Hey brother, thanks for the message. It sounds like you have things locked down regarding future plans. I see no reason why you can’t transfer your skills and do something online. My advice is to get really niche. Have a purpose-driven statement (one sentence), i.e., what problem you solve. Mine, for example, when pitching clients, is very succinct. Rather than say, I work in marketing. I reframe as - I help SMEs get their products & services in front of their target audience in a busy marketplace. It’s so much more impactful. Anyway I hope that helps. Best of luck, and keep in contact bro 👍🏻

    Just watched this after the current situation in England. With respect, I don't know you lad, but if the government wanted people out or to leave voluntarily and offer the money to leave, I would gladly pack up and leave because I am tired of the cost of living, the fakeness, the nefarious behaviour, the politics, the drama, the closet racism, the hatred to everyone from the antics of others, the constant belittling via non-verbal communication. The list goes on. After watching a short film by Riz Ahmed called The Long Goodbye, I am paranoid every second of every day, every week, every month, every year. The seeds are slowly being sowed. I have nothing against anyone, but I am slowly going mad looking over my shoulder being careful what to say and how to act. Like I said, I want to leave. Period. I would gladly leave if I was given an opportunity to leave to teach English or work in IT abroad and be in the state of equilibrium. IF you read this mate, please help me out by connecting with me because I do not want to die or be stuck here. Any advice would be appreciated on how to get out. Anything.

    • @mrdamianking
      @mrdamianking Před měsícem

      Hey brother, my first bit of advice is to never change from being you. If you spend your life worried about saying the wrong thing or upsetting others, you’re going to live a crappy existence, not to mention experiencing high levels of anxiety. You might want to check out a book called No More Mr Nice Guy by Dr Robert Glover. Whilst primarily geared towards relationships, the core principles relate to everyday life. You already sound as if you’re committed to leaving the U.K., so you’re over the first hurdle. I’d give teaching English a wide birth because the money is atrocious no matter where you base yourself. IT sounds a good option. Making money online is easy these days. But so many people are either too lazy to learn a new skill or don’t have the courage to take a risk. All my mates have now left the U.K., and not a single one regrets it. In fact, I’ve seen several of my close friends flourish since leaving the U.K. mentally, physically and financially. Realistically what’s the worst that can happen?

    Damian, excellent advice - 99.99% of YT commentators are full of 'bovine emission'. Let me add a few observations. 1 Do not pay a booking fee, even for a finished project, until your lawyer has done their due diligence. These fees are non-refundable. Developers do not like potential buyers who use a lawyer. In fact, very few buyers use a lawyer. This is a mistake. Just ask all those who bought in the Ashton Asoke Condo! 2 You must see the accounts for the Juristic Person to check that the finances of the building are sound. Non-payment of the CAM fee is a major issue, particularly by Thais. 3 Verify how many units are for sale. Developers are reluctant to release this information and what they tell you might not be true. I recently lived in a building developed by an SET listed developer. After 18 months, they posted details in the lobby of unsold units -15% of the units - at a discount of 20% on the original price! This is standard practice. Another point. Right now, circa 60% of mortgage applications are being rejected. A sale subject to loan approval is not a sale! Ask the developer if units sold includes units subject to loan finance. 4 Pay an engineer to inspect the unit and building, particularly those built during the p'demic. 5 As part of your due diligence, you need to verify the accounts of the developer. Imagine the developer goes bust and the bank that holds a mortgage on the land steps in and 'fire sales' the unsold stock. 6 If you are buying a condo as your home, treat it as a 'lifestyle' decision. For many, condos are a depreciating asset. I know Thais and non - Thais who have lost significant sums on resale. 7 Try and buy corner units where you only have one party wall. Lack of noise insulation is a major problem, even in expensive projects. In my previous rental, I could hear my neighbour brush his teeth. When his gf stayed over ... lol. 8 Check the reviews on google maps to see if there is a problem with short term rentals. You may also pick up useful information on the maintenance and quality of the project. AirBnB rentals are a plague in HH, Phuket and Pattaya. Finally, the market is awash with stock. Do not hesitate to offer well below the asking price. Developers play silly games with their 'quotations' which show hefty discounts from a fictitious opening price. Recently, I got a reduction in the rate per square metre of 10%. I got a 'final' price on Thursday and 10% lower on Sunday. The price was still too high!. Apologies for my long post, but I have had a professional and private involvement in property since 1971, and hope these thoughts might alert potential buyers to the pitfalls. Ah, one more thought. Unlike the UK and the US where you can access online price data, there is no public record of sales transactions. Keep up the good work.

    I agree, the UK punishes people that work hard that seek freedom and ability to determine their own lifestyle. The government have sought to tax the entrepreneurial and totally destroyed a person's ability to work on their own terms. Seeking to chain them to an employer and make it impossible to move on. One more I'd mention is the toxic environment in the UK. Generally the people. The people in workplaces that subscribe to the dictatorial mindset. Where the government have made people's life a misery moreso where you actually have people that use it to make you feel more trapped. The mobility to live life flexibly is not allowed. It's gor much worse after covid. The attitude of those towards workers has decreased job security. It also seems at every turn the UK seeks to relieve you of hard earned money like no other place. Everything has a price tag however the available money to pay just is not feasible. This leads to the feelings of being trapped in a cycle of debt. I call it the debt cycle. It has become increasingly worse over the last 25 years. The debt cycle is where quality of life is being diminished by simply living. You're trying to escape it, but there is always something else that keeps a person trapped. I call it the debt cycle, the cycle of debt that someone is always owed something.

    • @mrdamianking
      @mrdamianking Před 2 měsíci

      The U.K. government doesn’t want entrepreneurs; they want conformers who say nothing and pay their taxes like good little workers Thankfully there are enough options to escape the rat race. And if planned well enough, escape the U.K. altogether. The easiest way to escape the debt cycle is to not have debt. Don’t live beyond your means and invest wisely. Even then the government don’t make it easy.

    • @James-tk9to
      @James-tk9to Před 2 měsíci

      @mrdamianking the big one is mortgage debt. I've always had a suspicion that debt is a form of bondage. The worst being taxes. The mortgage is usually people's biggest outgoing. I believe the days of people using their mortgage as positive income is over. There were lots of policy changes relating to self employment around 2018 in the public sector and more lately the private sector deferred by covid by one year to 2021. To say life has become unbearably expensive would be an understatement. The tax regime goes after anyone that's worked hard and sought to be independent from reliance on public funds. Hence, the landlord exodus to escape punitive taxes to make owning property a burden not a benefit. The cost of living is eye watering. The things that used to be free in public ownership are now monetized. The trend of the van life culture is a kind of halfway house to the ex pat lifestyle to leaving the country by plane. Its a signal for me that people are checking out and resetting their life path. The root is a debt ridden society. The UK government decision to pay everyone's salary will almost certainly lead to widespread poverty in the UK. Living costs are rising in spite of inflation and salaries have stayed low - which has been the case for nearly 25 year's. There is massive inequality. People that were born since the mid 1970s have had it very hard. For example, I met an ordinary maintenance worker born in the 60s living in a £1M house next-door to lawyers, bankers etc that's mortgage free, gold plated public final salary pension (since abolished and no longer exists). As he said, he looks at the younger fella in the exact sane position as himself, living in rented property and don't get the overtime he got - double time ...treble time ...that was the difference and made him being able to provide for his family. Wealth inequality is a major issue. There is no discernible difference between himself and the younger fella. It is driving factor for people to check out. The level of debt that people fund to live is mindless. I know that something is going very wrong in society. When you see young graduates with up to £200k in debt you realise there is absolutely no chance for them. You say be debt free but simply living or striving it is impossible to avoid it. I agree as a proposition the UK no longer is viable. The opportunity for public authorities to relieve you of your money is too widespread.

      @mrdamianking do you have any tips or practical advice on how to exit the UK, with a view never to return other than short visits? I suppose at some point you have to have a foundation for example around late 30s to early 40s reasonably fit and healthy and have a good 20 years of work behind you. I agree the days of working in a toxic environment for an a***hole of a boss and people that p*ss you off are gone. Freedom is most definitely the currency but I think that only applies to those that have planned for it. If you're a young family, have personal debts, and school going children, with only one parent working, it must be very hard to think of moving. The freedom to choose is I think for someone that is single no ties and has lived in a way that leaves the door open to leave the UK. I think it's a great option if you have planned for it, and probably suits a man than a woman. I think after 50...60...it would be much more difficult to sustain, and I am thinking about the long game too, as everyone is getting older.

      @James-tk9to it’s something I get asked a lot. Yes, I agree it’s easier for some people than others. But it depends on several factors, the main one being - how much do you want change? And what are you willing to sacrifice in order to make change happen? Consequently, there is a question I’d pose, which is a question a mentor of mine posed to me back in 2005 when I quit my corporate career, and it changed my outlook on life, even to this day - Will more of what you already have make you happy? If the answer is no, you have some big decisions to make.

    I left the UK 20 years ago, for same as ur reasons. Live and work middle east but home in Bangkok Thailand. Best thing i ever did, never want to go back to that dive. Tax free 20 years, only continue class 2 NI contributations. I aint funding scrounging scumbags anymore. I work in Oman have not locked my car anywhere i go past 6 years, virtually crime free.

    Re taxation, easy to forget the government takes 13.8% of your salary as employer National Insurance. Higher rate taxpayers get fleeced in reality for about 60% tax after taking VAT and council tax into account.

    When you understand that the UK is not a country but the biggest tax haven gateway for companies to park up their wealth in offshore islands you will understand where the wealth in the economy emanates from. It's not the working class native population, but foreign interests. Big creditors that own the Bank of England stay anonymous because they are running down the economy like they have been doing since the fall of the Roman Empire. Like a sponge they absorb all the wealth and leaving us all dry via usury. The reason why UAE can offer 0% tax is because they have state owned oil companies and they control everything. In the UK we control nothing.
