Welcome to The Sloth Institute Costa Rica (TSI). TSI's vision is to enhance and expand the welfare and conservation of sloths through rescue, rehab, release, research, education and conservation initiatives. TSI's sloth release and tracking program is the first of its kind. TSI is located in Manuel Antonio, Costa rica and is dedicated to helping one of the most charismatic animals in the world, the sloth.
Baby sloth reunited with mom
This past weekend, this newborn baby three-fingered sloth was found in the middle of the road in a patch of forest with trees that had recently been severely trimmed causing significant loss to the canopy connection in that area. Every rescued sloth we receive is evaluated for their best way back to the wild. For babies found alone this often means finding their mom and reuniting them.
At first, during the health check for this baby, we were concerned as it seemed a little weak. However, after giving some rehydrating solutions and with a little bit of time the baby perked right up and was ready to be reunited with mom.
We went back to the area where the baby was found and located the mom. After putting the baby at the base of the tree where mom was located, baby started her location call (loud cries to let mom know where to go) and didn’t stop until they were together again. After the reunion we even observed the baby nursing!
Watch this heartfelt reunion and stay tuned for the next video showing the installation of sloth speedways in this fragmented area to hopefully make this location safer for both mom and baby sloths in the future.

Release Day for Schumer the Anteater!

Schumer was an orphaned baby anteater who was rescued by MINAE. A rescue needed to help handraise and rehabilitate her until she was ready to be returned to the wild. The Sloth Institute took on the job, and today we are so proud of Schumer! She is all grown up and ready to be back in the rainforest.
