Don’t let proportions stop you from plein air
zhlédnutí 279Před 9 měsíci
For this gouache sketch, I decided to ignore the proportions a little bit because I don’t want it to stop me from sketching. I tried to direct my attention instead to the boat shape and the more muted background instead. Framing your sketch with dried gouache

How do you sketch in the middle of the crowd? In some quiet corners, it’s often possible to sneak in a tiny sketchbook and your painting/drawing kit. It sometimes even makes for some interesting compositions as you focus on your subject in a tight corner. Sketching complex greens with dried gouache
zhlédnutí 407Před 10 měsíci
Greens are really hard, but layering it bit by bit starting from the darkest to the lightest parts really help. The key is to be brave with values! These greens are created by two blues and two yellows, and that’s enough to create this full variety of greens. I also touch a bit on deliberate practice, an idea from a book called So Good They Can’t Ignore You by @CalNewportMedia. How do you achie...

So helpful, thanks for sharing
Platinum Carbon Black is absolutely superb ink. Love drawing with it!
I love the way you chat while painting. I feel like I am sitting down with a friend and painting and chatting. I often just work on something of my own at the same time.
I forgot about that grey toned sketch book, I need to get me one of those to try. I forget how beautiful paintings can be on toned paper. I think it will go great will the gouache I just got.
QUICK RELEASE BRACKET
Do you have a link to that camera you have on your cup easel? How long can you record with it before the battery dies?
I know I’m late to this comment section, but you can periodically condition the magnetic part of the palette with a little olive oil or other vegetable oil. I read that tip on the Art Toolkit website.
I think van ness pens gives bigger or cheaper samples. Shop around.
Don’t feel you have to show only stuff we can run out and buy. I’m here because I’m curious. Not because I can afford to shop.
Had to come back and watch some vids again. Loved the colors on this sketch. It’s spring here and I got to get back to doing some painting. Hopefully I will be able to catch some of it on video. Thank you for always being amazing.
Thanks for the review. I watched this several times before buying one of these, it is gorgeous in person. I am a complete noob to all art related things. Bought this because i don't have a lot of room inside for this type of activity so I just set it up out in the back yard and try to learn to paint there. I really like it except the mixing pallet is too small for me (probably because of my noobness). The pallet on the right actually has kept my acrylics wet for several weeks as long as the section for the paint was at least a quarter full (i replaced the one like you have with the one that is sectioned off).
With art you can run, but you can't hide. The ol' 'This is just a sketch..' stuff gets old and at some point you need to learn how to draw and to paint properly.
Hey! thanks for sharing this. I'm just getting into urban painting and it's so fun to see someone else's thought processes too. I hope you keep it up :)
Thanks for sharing really interesting
Don’t listen to haters- wearing a mask is cool! Thanks for sharing!
I'm no hater, but wearing a mask is neither cool nor hygienic for long periods of time. Wearing masks outdoors in wide open spaces as she's doing doesn't help her or anyone passing by. (According to scientists) that being said, I just came for the art and thought I'd respectfully reply to you.
Thanks so much for the excellent review and painting!
how do you find the rosemary travel brushes?
I have purchased so many different leather notebook covers for the pocket and the last one that came was the travelers one…however I saw the Potter one last year and really wanted that one…it looked perfect and there were all kinds of sizes and the pocket size, mini was the one I wanted…after trying all the others, I finally pull the plug on the Plotter Mini 5 and I am excited to get it in my hands. I carry a notebook every day for jotting down random thoughts, to do lists, quotes and stuff like that. I love that color you chose
Really informative and concise reviews - Thankyou
How are you?❤
plotter update?
Mask when you are by yourself lol. Thar us sad
Try to keep painting regularly even when you’re working. You don’t have to film nor post it. It’s easy to forget your art once you start working, and eventually you’ll stop painting for years.
i like seeing Hong Kong, and you have a great way of talking about the area and what is going on and you dont have to be an expert to create art peolpe like to see 😀
that looks great :D interesting shapes, making interesting sketch 😀
Hope you enjoy your break! :)
I love watching you it’s raw not all sound effects n stuff I enjoy watching some one that is around my level I guess to watch them grow as an artist and your easy on the eyes 😊
I enjoy watching your videos for your urban sketching journey ❤
The bamboo structure is def a signature HK look!
Great review, thank you
That's a cool building to sketch!

This video had an endearing elegance to it somehow mixed with a relaxed and welcoming vibe. Please do more like these!
Becky, I have enjoyed this video enormously!!!! Just to have you talking what you're thinking as you are doing the painting is really ... great! More, please? And thank you for not wanting to be monetised. Otherwise, we'd have had at least two ad breaks during this 15 minute video. Ads are becoming more and more intrusive, and I'm sure it's policy on YT to 'encourage' us to take the 'pay for ad free' route. The downside is that views are down across the board as folk get fed up with an ad 2 minutes in, and several others during a video, usually cutting across a sentence, or in a totally inappropriate place. I know it's 'free', but some of us can't afford to pay the premium. That's not YT's fault, so my thoughts are just wishful thinking, and my emotions and heart say a mega thank you to all the ArtTuber folk who still offer their content freely. Anyway, enough of that! Many thanks again for sharing your art experience and your thoughts with us. I appreciate it enormously! 🤗
Becky I’m right there with you the building are very intimidating you need a headlamp. That’s the next thing on my list for urban sketching and plein air. ❤
I loved the video. I love that your so transparent in why you have a channel. I am with you on not monetizing. I also fork out the cost to you tube. It’s great that you just want to share. I have been subscribed to you for awhile. Really thanks for sharing. I think I needed to hear it today. You tube has me so stressed sometimes watching to see if my channel does well. Like it shows my value as an artist. I realize after your video that I just need to have fun. Thanks for sharing my friend across the pond 😊❤
" I realize after your video that I just need to have fun." Yes!!!!!!!! And people will respond positively to you having fun, too! 💃
q hermosa eres😘🤩🇨🇴
Thanks for always showing us such cool shots of HK! 😁
In 2023 finally a bujo in a Standard TN grid notebook started to work for me😅😅😅 Because I stopped setting it up too much.
You think that a,binder weighs less than a notebook???
I have not yet used gouache. Thank you for showing some uses for it in your sketch.
If you have a set of watercolours, a tube of white gouache mixed in with them could give you a taste! Or even just mixing the white that comes in those watercolours sets
Hi Becky! Your greens you painted in the market square are wonderful. No potato here!!! Good the Hong Kong typhoon has passed. I am hosting the upcoming Favorite Fish Art Challenge and hope you will participate. You would be an excellent addition.
Thankfully it passed with minimal damage! I've never heard of the Favorite Fish Art Challenge, I'll definitely have to check it out.
@@beckyisj Becky wonderful! I have a video on my CZcams page with all the details for how to participate. Please let me know if you have any questions
Becky, I've been thinking about you a lot in the last couple of days, because of Saola. How are you and your friends? I hope that you're all ok. 🤗
Thank you for checking in! It was a wild storm over the weekend and we all were advised by the government to stay home but thankfully not much damage. The roads were cleared from Sunday onwards and a tidying up effort has begun.
the choppy footage actually made it look pretty cool!
It's like some kind of time capsule!
Love that we get to see a bit of HK along with your painting journey!
Aw thanks for following along!
Hi, Becky! Thank you! I really enjoyed this video (greens - a favourite topic with me!). It had lots more painting content as you chatted, which made a lot of difference, too. Suggestion: Have you tried adding a *tiny* touch of red to your greens? It gives a wider range of greens. PR101 Burnt sienna, PV19 permanent rose, and Permanent Alizarin Crimson (I don't know its new pigment number, as I stocked up when I know it was going to change! ) will all add significantly to your range. Which blues do you have in your palettes? I have four reds, four blues and four yellows in my boxes, all W&N, and it's all I've needed since I began watercolour, years ago! A change of location and building colours have pushed me to add three more recently, but needed only in very small amounts. I have: PR101 Burnt Sienna , Permanent Alizarin Crimson (I don't know its new pigment number as I stocked up when I knw it was going to change!), PV19, Permanent Rose, and (a rarely used) PR108 Cadmium Red. P175 Winsor Lemon, Cadmium Yellow, Raw sienna (I don't like the opaque Yellow Ocre, and this one has a glorious glow to it), then PBr7 • PR101 • PY42 Burnt Umber. PB35 Cerulean Blue, PB29 French Ultramarine, PB28 Cobalt Blue and PB27 Prussian Blue (all four make lovely green and all four make lovely purples - the Cerulean , a muted violet.) I also added PBr7 Raw Umber (another transparent as a yellow ochre exchange), PBk6 + PR101 Sepia, and PBk11 Mars / Lunar black for its granulating properties for local rock and stone. I can, and do get granulating greys with French Ultra as a granulating base, but PBk11 makes an interesting option. I do also have a 'play' box made up of 29 samples and freebies I've accumulated over the years and only recently finally given a home, and these are great fun for 'just playing around', but only the Sepia and Mars Black have made it to my plein air set. Anyway, hoping something here sparks ideas for you! Maybe on a day that you can't do plein air, a playtime with mixing yours, one over and under the next, so in the end, you've mixed each colour with each one of the others will give you exciting, unexpected and happy, useful surprises. From my 12 original colours, I can make a minimum of 144 others. A minimum as it depends on the quantity of each I add to the other), and I can make far more by doing three-colour mixes. The number is infinite! 💃😄
Ah, I surprisingly haven't added much reds to my greens! Thanks for the tip (and for also using my palette as reference) - I'll definitely have to explore more green mixing - and other colour mixings of my palette, too! Your palette sounds like it's really versatile, with a really great warm and cool. I believe my blues are prussian blue and either turquoise blue or cerulean blue; all from Holbein's gouache line.
