This Edwin Starr big-hit song about war was written in 1970. In 1971, Marvin Gaye took his own co-written song, What's Going On, to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. In 70 and 71, the subject of war was still very-fresh in the minds of those who went to Vietnam and other nearby countries in SE Asia. And, soldiers weren't the only ones who were affected. Many people who never left the home shores of the US were also touched by the experience. The time they waited for loved ones to return was spent in hopeful-yet-fearful anxiety. At least one line of Marvin Gaye's song describes the situation, "Father, father We don't need to escalate "You see, war is not the answer "For only love can conquer hate". Unfortunately, the terms, 'won', and 'lost', aren't so clear-cut when it comes to war. As already quoted above, there's a reason why people still say, "War is hell".
