    S5000 is the relaunched F5000. Runs in Australia and New Zealand. Initiative of former F5000 and Kart champ Chris Lambden. Same ruiness forces at play to kill it off. Saw Rubens Barricello run in one at Sandown (Australia) a couple of years ago. Chris formula was to organise the aerodynamics to permit full time nose to tail racing and to standardise the mechanics to place 100% focus on the drivers. This he succeeded in doing. A quick search of "F1 vs F5000 lap times" shows they were nearly even on the same circuits. Mechanical failures were common in both series in that era. Then there's this quote found during the quick search: “I tested the Formula 1 car at Riverside before the 1975 season, and I couldn’t match the Formula 5000 times. God, I was so disillusioned!” Andretti laughs. “That Lola really suited me. Eric Broadley was a magician when it came to suspension geometry, and I understood what the car needed to hit the sweet spot. I don’t think anybody could beat me in that Formula 5000 car.” Suffice to say, had F5000 stayed in operation, it would have been a lot more fun at the race track.

    I got to see a few F5000 races, mostly at Lime Rock and I'm here to tell you, the cars were VERY impressive! As were the rosters of name drivers that showed up to drive them. But I have to take serious issue with your contention that they were faster than the F1 cars of the day. In the UK, there were a number of non-championship races at venues like Brands Hatch, Silverstone and the like in which F5000 machines competed against F1 cars, and to the best of my recollection, the F1s were always quicker in qualis and always beat the stock-blockers. In the US, there were seldom many (if any) F1 cars available to run against F5000 competition, but one such that did was a Brabham ( a BT26 tube-framer?) with a DFV Cossie driven by a Texan named Gus Hutchinson that was always seriously faster -- reliability issues and (if I'm remembering it right) small fuel tanks kept it from winning as often as it should have.

    Great review! Thanks! Formula 5000 has legendary status here in Australia. The very fact that it thrived here (down-under) for several years indicates that it was a financially viable category for a short while. Eventually F5000 lost out to touring cars as the tin-tops (as they were called then) became more recognizable to Joe Public. The loss of F5000 in Australia, by the early 80's, has been mourned ever since.

As to brakes, it is possible and not hugely expensive to upgrade brakes, drums to discs. In my hot climate, thermostatic fans are a popular improvement. Of course, how far do you go bringing the vehicle into the 21st. century? Surely, part of the appeal is the car's idiosyncrasies. Tail lights NONE AVAILABLE.... 1969 Roadrunner/Satellite, NEW REPOP GRILLS AVAILABLE. 1968 NONE AVAILABLE. Early 1960 T-birds, rear windshield not available... Research before you buy. Harold, I’m curious about your seatbelts in your 66. I watched the video back to back maybe 3 times, but could never see where you had the shoulder strap mounted. I’m guessing at the ceiling where the B pillar would be if it had one? Did you also attach the seatbelt to the seat back, so the rear passenger steps through the seatbelt? Would you mind sharing what seatbelts and seats you went with?

    • @westhillswood51
      @westhillswood51 Před 3 měsíci

      The seats themselves are out of a 1993 Taurus and the latch is built into the seat. The other end ties through the floor is the stock location. The shoulder loop is tied to the roof line into a 6-inch bar welded in place. A rear seat passenger has to manipulate the seatbelt and wedge through behind the non-folding front seat. With no pillar, acrobatics are possible. This is not the safest way to go but it is safer than a lap belt alone and is one more point of the video (even though it doesn't get mentioned). The belts were purchased new from a place in Oxnard, CA no longer in business.

    Great points. Brakes are very important, and should be inspected often. I owned a 1965 Mustang C code Fastback I bought in 1980, a few weeks after owning it my brakes lost all pressure as I was coming off the freeway, the flexible brake line going to the front brake rubbed against the front tire and caused it to leak, I nearly crashed the car. First thing I did was get a dual reservoir master cylinder, and front disk brakes from a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 that was being parted out. I also used stainless steel flex brake lines to the front and rear brakes to replace the rubber lines.

      @@westhillswood51Someone may have removed the hold clip that holds the rubber flex brake hose to the bracket off the frame to keep it from rubbing against the tire. I knew nothing about brakes and cars then I was only 16 years old, and it was my first car. I ended up buying a Chilton's and Ford Shop Manual and read up on how to do the brakes. Everyone told me that Disc Brakes off a 1970 Mustang would not fit on my 1965 Mustang Fastback as they use a different ball joint, but they worked, I just had to use different tie rods,.

    Really good advice on how old cars compare with modern. They do not make good daily drivers for that reason. Throw in lack of air bags too, Owning an old car is not near as glamorous as you think. They all look great but modern cars do everything better.

      What rhetoric would that be? The longtime owner simply explaining what to look for in an old car? Maybe explaining why not to be concerned with 450 horsepower? Maybe that the mirrors are smaller than modern cars? Maybe that old cars don't make for great commuter cars today? I assume you watched the video and while you took the time to comment you did not provide anything useful.

    This is a well thought-out production to watch in getting knowledge of the "classic old days of racing". So many notable names of motor car companies of the distant past are shown. Of those shown, few still exist in some way or the other. And, the cubic inch displacement of the motors! Huge, let alone heavy weight! Good show!

    • @westhillswood51
      @westhillswood51 Před 4 měsíci

      Much appreciated! There are ample reasons for motor car companies to fail, especially in the early days. Those were some very brave men back then. We still have them, but they get lost in the crowd. 900+ cubic inches in a 4-cylinder would only turn around 1400 rpm. Big torque and tall gears made them capable of over 100 mph.

    The Silver Crown name came about in 1981 following the introduction of the Gold Crown Series. The Gold Crown series encompassed USAC-sanctioned Indy Car races + the dirt mile champ car races. The Silver Crown series encompassed all the dirt track champ car races. From 1971-80, the series was known as the USAC Championship Dirt division. But even though the USAC Gold Crown series went away by the end of 1984, the Silver Crown name stuck for the dirt champ cars, and it’s been known as that ever since, except for a three-year period between 1999-2001. From 1999-2001, Coors Light was brought on board as the series’ title sponsor and the name during those years was changed to the USAC Silver Bullet series. But the Silver Crown name returned for the 2002 season when Coors was no longer a series sponsor.
