In the Netherlands (RNAF), the pilots and crews KNEW this airplane. Very few accidents.

This is the coolest thing I ever heard.

She was called the widow maker in part to it's original ejection seat. At the time it was designed, Lockheed had low confidence in the ejection seat of the time being able to have the pilot clear the vertical stabilizer while at high speed. So, they opted for a downward firing seat. But she had poor low speed handling characteristics and any loss of control or engine problems at low altitude, such as landing approaches, meant the pilot had two options: stay with the plane and hope for the best or eject into the ground. The German air force had a very high attrition rate, mainly because they operated the high speed high altitude optimized interceptor plane as a low altitude fighter bomber. The wing loading was already very high for a fighter and all the additional ordinance stores on the wings made the plane harder to maneuver, resulting in many controlled flight into terrain accidents. The roundel on this F-104 means it was in service for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. They lost a total of 43 airframes from a total of 138. .

Not many of these guys left, it's a pleasure to see them and how they still remember how to fly her. The dutch knew this plane and flew it properly, very few accidents. Tip my hat to the RNAF

Love it! The Starfighter has always been my favorite jet!! On Christmas Day 1971 or 72 I got my first glue together models - a Monogram 1/35 6x6 Army Cargo truck and a 1/48 Revell F-104 Starfighter. Was many years before I actually saw one in person at a museum at Chanute AFB before it was moved to Tennessee. Got to visit some in Japan and have visited the F-104A with a 'G' tail on it at Edwards AFB here in Southern California.

I was an F-16 pilot from 1987-1994. I flew formation with large aircraft and it was always so cool to do. There will always be someone that has something bad to say about something great like that! Any time we did anything like that, someone would say that we were wasting taxpayers' money. However, we always hung our hats on it being training. And it was great training. Beautiful pictures by the way!

For context why this was allowed: NATO pilots are required to do at least 180 flight hours a year, for not just experience but to preserve skills. So that means a lot of it just going out flying. Going out to escort a passenger plane? That's even better use of the flight hours.

After all, F-16 planes have to go out and fly and the pilots have to have their airtime in these planes, so whether they fly around on general towing missions or a "mission" like this has no meaning for taxpayers' money. I think it was a great gesture to give to his father.

I got a few similar stories while flying single pilot IFR in the Netherlands and Germany, most of them in the approach and landing phase. Mind and Body reactions afterwards were beyond belief.
