We didn't include it because it was his novel but not his screenplay or direction. We also didn't include his writing for Devil May Cry etc. and we both haven't seen THE BEACH yet. Can you recommend it?

That has got to look incredible on 4K. What makes it so rewatchable for you? The world? The characters? A combination of both or something different?

@@QuietOnSetPodcast yeh the environment is of course beautiful. but some of the monologues bare fruit with mulitple watchings and the journey itself is worth taking more than once. the characters are a good range of troubled. perfect protagonists. there are some prime scenes that are fantastic like the pool/cam/knife scene which are visually perfect and the gene mingling stuff is more obvious on second view, and it doesn't have a stupid happy ending but one that you have to wrestle with.

I read the whole Souther Reach trilogy because of the film - I have to say it's not worth it. The first book, which the film is based on, is a good read. But after that, the most intriguing part of this world, Area X, hardly plays a role any more and the story and characters are somewhat convolutely written.

I agree I also watched it like 5 times since its release, also in 4K one time. Visually it's absolutely intriguing and the idea of Area X (or The Shimer as it's called in the film), the characters and world-building offer a lot to unravel. To see it at 6.8 on IMDB is painful. Many people couldn't handle the cosmic horror of the Final act, I guess.

If you are a sci-fi lover and dislike a film solely for its female cast, you are not a sci-fi lover, IMHO. Besides, it's even adressed in the movie why that is.

Brb rewatching the dark knight again

So why is that award winning director narcissistic compared to others? Spielberg wanted to make a similar point with Schindlers List regarding the girl in the red coat too how glaringly obvious she was yet still ignored just made another statistic. I don't have much desire to see the film or Openheimer either but I am sensitive enough still to the historical relevance of the subject matter.

Conflating this film with the holocaust isn’t fair to critics of the film. If we were on the other side of the wall during the film, no doubt falling asleep would mean a lot. What I suppose was meant by that was that everything that mostly everything that happened in the film (whether in the background or the foreground) was largely monotonous. The suffering we hear and see the ashes and smoke of throughout the movie are a constant, most of the scenes with the family are inconsequential, and the good scenes in the movie that held weight (washing up after the river, strolling through the garden with grandma, grandma’s departure, the red flower, the Polish girl in the dark, etc.) don’t get follow-up in any significant way. I didn’t find the movie boring - I was constantly engaged - but leaving the theater left me deeply unsatisfied with the viewing experience.

@@fewntug3760 You are absolutely right. I meant it more as a thought experiment rather than critiquing you review, because if you conflate it, it does sound really bad, doesn't it? The people depicted ARE boring, their family problems are mundane, most of the meetings he attends "could have been an e-mail" (as some other reviewer poignatly stated), I am completely with you on that. Without the soundtrack in the background, this would be like a terrible and uninteresting Nazi sitcom. Moreover, I was also uncomfortable and unsatisfied with the viewing experience. I just personally thought that was the point of the film and that feeling satisfied about any of it would have somehow been wrong. I didn't come out of this film thinking: wow, that was great, let's see that again. I came out of this saying: I'll never ever watcht that again, but it needed to be seen, or more acurately heard.

Well the holocaust did not go anywhere either, did it? It was just atrocities and people killed for absolutley no understandable reason, and the world ended up the same as before. We did not learn anything from it. The ending scene you would have liked (good idea btw.) would have meant a resolution and maybe even an absolution for the audience, but that is just not what happens. - That is just like my opinion, of course.

@@Blue_Grass_Girl I think having Rudolf go back to exactly what he was doing would have gelled well with the vibe you’ve described. Neither the audience nor Rudolf are absolved because even when we envision the shoe on the other foot, we mostly just keep doing what we’re doing. There’s no more resolution than the movie offered in my suggestion, because it’s all in Rudolf’s head. He envisions his family and himself in the same scenarios he’s creating for others but carries on all the same. My suggestion isn’t for the sake of resolution, but for the sake of tempo. The entire time the movie felt it was building up to something through elements peppered throughout.. then those elements weren’t used again and the ending gave a haunting premonition for Rudolf but a very familiar sight for the audience. Giving both the audience and the main character a haunting experience would have just worked better, imo.

@@fewntug3760 Oh, film-making wise. Sorry I misunderstood. Yes you are right, that would have been a great (for lack of a better word in this context) way to end it. The pacing felt strange and the ending weirdly disorienting. I just felt it made sense that not only the film but also the ending would leave me unhappy. Jonathan Glazer knows his craft, I think, so he must have done that on purpose.
