the way i interpreted their relationship was that patrick had feelings for art from the start. he was more aware of his feelings and developed much faster than he did. art on the other hand was a late bloomer and even had his first sexual experience with patrick, but any feelings he had towards him are repressed or channelled through their passion/competition within the sport of tennis. when tashi enters their lives, patrick, despite his own attraction to her, quickly notices how infatuated art is with her. to prevent art and tashi from getting together, patrick decides to pursue her himself. he further exacerbates the situation with is own bravado which makes art feel inferior, creating a competitive dynamic where art feels he must vie with patrick for tashi's love and attention. meanwhile, when patrick and tashi have sex, she literally brings up art to turn him on. the only way patrick knows how to manipulate any situation is through his sexuality. so when patrick has sex with tashi before the challenger, it first appears like he's trying to take tashi away from art, but really he's trying to separate art from tashi. however, art only sees this as another attempt for patrick to steal tashi's love and affection. when you watch the sauna scene from art's perspective, patrick seems like an asshole attempting to steal his wife and get him off his game before the challenger. but from patrick's perspective, he's not evening thinking about tennis! he's thinking about him and art and how much he wants to have a relationship with him again (aka play good fucking tennis with him again).
