My first half marathon of 2023 and first race ever with a Go Pro. I set out mainly to figure out where my current level of fitness was. As a benchmark, I tried to aim for 1:46:00 which is my PB from September 22 at The Big Half. I planned for a large negative split for this race so that I wouldn’t ruin myself in the first 20 minutes. The plan was to push in the second half if I could. Turns out...

    I came across your video as I've been watching NYC Marathon vlogs this past week. This is amazing! I hope to be there next year. Like you, I'm a relatively new runner. Started January 2022. Did my first 10k Nov 2022 and then kept going to do a Half Marathon in January 2023! It was the most exhilarating moment to finish that half!!! I went on to do 2 virtual half marathons. Now doing another half marathon in Jan 2024 (pushing for a better time) and really hoping to be in NYC for my first full marathon next year. Watching your video really encourages me, I've been watching so many lately and it really helps to see other's experiences. Congratulations on completing both Chicago and NYC! That's amazing. How did you handle the cramping? Salts, gels? What helped you?

    • @RunwithKush
      @RunwithKush Před 8 měsíci

      That’s an amazing progression. NYC energy is unmatched. I hope you get to run it soon. I think I cramped less and later in NY mainly because I was putting a lot less effort in as I was completely tired. I’m yet to figure out how to avoid it. Probably just run more and strength training. Weird thing is I cramped very little in my first marathon and it’s the best one I’ve run to date in terms of being able to hold a goal pace till the end.

      Interesting how that happens, that you didn't cramp on your first but have since. Hopefully you get to sort it out. Thank you for you reply. Found out a parent in one of my kids' class ran it this year and said the same thing, the NYC energy is unmatched. I look forward to it. @@RunwithKush

    Woow mad respect for your honest marathon experience 👌. Time isn't everything, even 4h30min would be still good. Remember it is one hell of a distance and most people will never run a marathon in their life. I can tell you one thing, with some dedication and more long distance experience you can take at least one half hour of. But give it time, like 2 years and 5 marathons later. I did 16 marathons in the last 4 year and could take almost an hour of my first marathon where it felt also like hell for me. And how older you are getting the better you can handle the marathon beast , and i don't mean time but dosing your power and dealing with the pain that comes with handling "the marathon beast" 😎. Keep up the good runs bro 💪

    Well done. Keep at it and you'll get there. Miles over time. I wasn't sure I'd ever run sub-4 after my first -- a 4h49m sufferfest -- but ran 3h15m three years later. Consistent weekly mileage is the key. BTW, my third marathon was 4 hours and 3 seconds! I won the heartbreak prize which was actually quite nice. 3:59:56 on my watch, but no chip time at the small race. I thought I'd make it until I saw the finish clock and realized my error.

    We all have different bodies and experiences so please take my comment as just an anecdote which may or may not apply to you because I am no armchair doctor. I had several issues with cramping, and besides supplementation and electrolytes (the usual stuff really) I did a couple targeted sport massages and felt my calf loosen ever since. Even my plantar pain is now more manageable. Planting a seed here but again, you know your body best. Good luck for the next marathon, you'll crush it because you have the best attitude

    Great content kush. It happens that's marathon like you mentioned in this video. I had similar problem in my first 2 marathons, i was thinking its because of lack low sodium but at the end you got to get more miles per week and get your quads and hamstring use to high mileage.. Once I started running 50 or 60 miles per week ( based on your goal time) I noticed cramping gone and able to do negative split race. Consistency is the only slow and 100% answer to it. I ran same race as well, great experience.

      My training block was good. On average in the 16 week plan, I ran 28 miles per week. Longest long run 19 miles (I run to time, so 3 hours). I achieved a 5k PR of 21:58 on a time trial which is nearly 2 mins faster than this time last year when I ran a 4:00:44 marathon in London. This is why I was quite confident for Chicago but alas, on race day I didn’t get going.
