Godzilla Toys of the 1970s and 1980s
While there are may that believe that the late 1970s and early 1980s were a dead spot in terms of interest for classic Kaiju films, Toho’s most famous monster, Godzilla and other Giant Monster or Kaiju films were still a common sight on local television stations, both late at night and on lazy Saturday afternoons. During this time, Godzilla and his monster kin were finding their way into popular media of all sorts. Godzilla himself briefly joined the Marvel comics universe and became the star of a Hanna Barbera cartoon that was popular on Saturday mornings. Being a kid at this time, it felt like interest in Godzilla was gaining momentum, not faltering, and this led to some of the best and most interesting Godzilla toys ever made. Toys such as Shogun Warriors Godzilla, HG Toys Godzilla vs. the Tricephalon, GLJ's Bendy Godzilla, and Mattel's Godzilla's Gang. With new Kaiju films recently hitting the screen regularly both here and in Japan, I can’t help but think back about a time when Godzilla was really being introduced to kids in the United States and the products were plentiful.

Giant toy monsters have been around a long time, but we have never seen a time in which the the giant monster toy was so prolific as the late 1970s and early 1980s. As soon as Godzilla was released to the Shogun Warriors toy line, a parade of other giant monster toys, including Rodan, Gregory the Vampire Bat, Krusher, Suckerman, and many more were introduced to toy shelves and to the delight of...

This was a trait that was present at the beginning of the 1980s fantasy toy craze, but certainly w...

12:23 - 12:40 See the tiny bot with a little blue book, I had one of those, can't remember if he did very much, but it was 'powered' by either one AA or two AAA batteries and I got him out of the Argos book. I also liked the nod to the intro to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Nice video, look forward to the next one.

Before these toys were sold in stores Milton Bradley tested their toys with kids back in the 70s. I was in middle school and I had gone to school in Longmeadow Massachusetts, the president of MB had a daughter in my class. We all were paid $5 I believe to go to a room at the company's plant in East Longmeadow. We were put in a room that had all of these toys. I specifically remember picking the Big Trac. It was awesome!

I had all the Power Lords figures. They seemed huge compared to the typical Star Wars figure size. Also, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Robo Force half-hour animated show “The Revenge of Nazgar”. It was a pilot for a regular animated series but it never got picked up. I recorded it on a VHS tape I watched many times, but I believe it was only aired once, and to most of the general public it was lost media for years until it was included in a DVD set for the Gobots cartoon.
