    In my humble opinion, the problem is not Christianity. Jesus was all about forgiving. Radical people tear what Jesus said apart and become judges of everyone else. Poirot was not like this. Obviously, murder is wrong, but Agatha Christie creates the illusion of justice because they were 12, like a jury. Only a jury can't be directly involved in the case, like they are. I understand Poirot's reluctance, because he is taking the judge's place and deciding to acquit the 12 people, and he is not supposed to do that. But transforming him (papa Poirot) in a religious phanatic is ludicrous. Sorry if I made mistakes, English is not my first language.

    "Meh" is the perfect word for that adaptation. I know the unreliable narrator element is tough to replicate on film, but having Dr Sheppard assume the "Hastings" role, combined with more interactions with his sister like we got in the book, would still have made for a far better twist. The journal just comes across as contrived and pointless in the TV adaptation - it's not a de facto suicide note, so why is he leaving it around for his sister to find? - and the ending was a catastrophe.

    There should be no black characters in either of these adaptations. If producers want to do this at least update them to the present day. And I missed Mr Ellsworthy's character; he's one of the best characters in the book.

  • @DarkAngel459
    @DarkAngel459 Před 9 dny

    I agree that Hastings in the 1986 version is the worst thing about that adaptation, but I've always liked everything else. I think Tony Curtis gives an amazing performance, and is less easier to spot as Ellis the first time you watch, and nails the 'madness' reveal. I love the moment where Miss Milray tries to destroy the evidence but is stopped by Poirot; the actress does a great job at selling the emotions of the character.

    I am sorry, but I really don't agree as far as Why didn't they ask Evans is concerned. I love that book and I am totally with you where the Marple-edition is concerned. That was awful. So I was really happy to konw there had been a neu adaptation - but, boy, was I disappointed. I can't quite make upp mey mind, if it was due to the script, to direction or to the actors - may be it was a mix. Suffice it to say, there was never a point where I forgot I was watching a movie - the main characters seemed very stupid most of the time and then suddenly they tumbled to the right conclusion - which never seemed to be earned. IMHO, the 80ies version with Francesca Annis was much superior - the only plus going for the new adaptation is the fact that the main characters are more the right age - Francesca & Co were too old to be very convincing as the bright young thing crowd they were meant to be.

    Excellent (and fun) review of the adaptations. I would still afford the 2015 version gold - I loved the time accurate modern house setting as it is believable that no one is hiding anywhere and the style is so Christie - but I absolutely agrre the one failing was changing the crimes to more clear murders in some cases. The reasoning about legal vs moral culpability is at the heart of both Christie's reasining and her murderer's.

    It's great to have a video on the short stories as due to the varied quality of the adaptations, whether that be due to how it was translated to screen or what the writer added to fill time, it means that I don't really care to watch them, other than The Chocolate Box. Miles I see the connection you're making to AC with the type writer sound effect, but I admit I do often miss your original opening with the dramatic synthetic chimes. I very much enjoyed Wasp's Nest for how different it is from your usual Poirot story; an effort to stop a murder from happening rather than react to one that's already occurred. I think it's pretty difficult to adapt these shorter stories into something approaching fearu length, but they do their best. Poirot's reading of the tea leaves being a ruse to explain him noticing of the clown makeup on the tea cup rim as opposed to Molly's lighter shade of lipstick was a brilliant detail. It's the kind of thing you'd expect AC to come up with herself. I'd probably rate Wasp's Next a bit higher than you did, but I thought your points were fair as usual. Another great video Miles.

    The Soviet adaptation is great though. You should watch it with subtitles. As far as I know it is still the one most faithful to the book. It even kept the original name, although I recon it was possible due to language differences - the word used in Russian translation is not the racial slur while the one Christie used very much is. Anyway, I enjoyed the 2015 version very much. Still, you make a great point about changing the crime of the «accused» from passive to active. To be fair while some of the characters of the original novel were legally in the clear during the time the book was written they could (and should) be prosecuted for their actions in the modern day - the lines are stricter (thankfully) so the modern reader will see their crimes somewhat differently, I think. However, the point about the ambiguity and the need to recognize that the characters might be not that different from the readers still stands. I think I’ll revisit the 2015 version with this in mind, thanks. And the Soviet version too. It’s been way too long. ) Thank you for the video! Loved it!

    I have to admit, I might have to give these two adaptations a rewatch. I remember really liking both to start, especially Murder is Easy, but found their resolutions a little underwhelming, presentation wise. Same thing with some of the previous BBC productions, so it must just be a “me” thing, it not until a rewatch that I go “Yeah, the way the scene plays out makes sense”. Though I agree Murder is Easy held on to its clues a little too close to itself at times.

    I don't much care for either iteration and think they probably have an equal tie for worst as both misread Poirot so egregiously (and for Suchet, this is almost unbelievable!). Poirot is not the paragon of law and order, and his sense of justice is generally tempered by compassion. I disagree with your comment that Poirot is not a moral absolutist - he is - but he isn't a deontological absolutist. On a side note, the evaluation of Christianity seems inaccurate and underplays that Poirot is a believer, and an apparently devout one, in the novels. The way this was portrayed was problematic, though, as Poirot isn't a kind of merciless inquisitor... however, he isn't a relativistic humanist either (as he sometimes states: "I do not approve of murder").

As an aside, I am very thankful that they’re choosing to adapt those stories that were forced into the Marple series a few years ago. As much as I love Miss Marple, she had no business being shoehorned into stand-alone stories.

    'Murder is Easy' has always been a favourite Christie novel of mine, and the 'Marple' version made me so disappointed...almost to the point of anger!!!...When I saw the casting of the 2023 version I was uneasy to say the least! BUT the change in the period setting made it work! I believed in these characters... Now, 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans' was not a favourite Christie novel. Far from it! I think it was somewhat 'messy' with clues and therefore less satisfactory with its denouement. The 2022 adaptation actually seemed to make more sense! I could see how the clues were leading (and misleading) the viewer, and it was solid entertainment!
