Thank you so much. I was looking for something like this as a basis of how to do tent poles. By adding a 'T' at the top, before the cap, a cross pole could easily be installed. Keep safe and well, wherever you live.

excellent, thank you. we don't camp much and wasn't going to spend $100 on nice REI poles for the weekend where it *might* rain, so I'm going to build these instead.

Just made a pair for my camper awning excellent idea.

I just made 4 poles the day before camping and I knew it was gonna rain all weekend. I used a 17 * 23 blue tarp and it worked all 4 days at 8' high I used an old aluminum pole in the middle to help out with drainage but it held up thanks.

Thanks for this post. It's still benefiting people almost 5 yrs later! I was thinking of this type of solution to save money on expensive tarp pole products and your video fills in all the blanks. A couple of things. In lieu of the wing nuts for height adjustment, I will try to find some quick release pins used on another DIY post, also known as Round Head Wire Lock Pin at Home Depot website. They're a little more expensive but would be welcome while setting up a tarp in a hurry, and would help avoid dropping and losing a small wing nut. Also, I'm pretty sure insulating the pins at the top is not important because PVC is not conductive, i.e. there is no path to ground.

Looks interesing how well they have hold? Can you share your experience using them? =)

OK per the video notes it is 2' (feet), should that be 2" (inches)? Just asking due to the distance I am seeing on the slide show.

Jen No tips except to set it up in your yard first with the tent under it. Play with the pole heights and spacing until it meets your needs. Best to do this before camping to avoid surprises. This is also an opportunity to cut guidelines to length. Cut them longer than you think you need. On the back edge where the tarp almost touches the ground I weave the rope through all grommets and place a steak in between each. Dax

Yago16yt I have used the poles with a big tarp, possible 15x20. Worked well. Use two guidelines on each pole. Use one pair of poles about every 8 feet in length. Be sure not to create a place for rain water to collect by pulling it tight and set poles so tarp has a slope. No tarp does well in strong wind. In wind I drop the porch section so only the part covering the tent is up. Dax
