The National Park Services is ticketing AWD for driving on 4WD TRAILS? AWD VS 4WD!
The buzz around the overlanding community is that the NPS is going to be citing AWDs on 4x4 trails! Is this going to be enforced and how will this affect all the AWDs that overland and camp on dispersed land? Dont forget to leave a comment if you have recommendations or suggestions for this topic!
This is just my two cents and know that everyone has an opinion about this and thats why I created this video so that we may all discuss it. As of right now I know that AWD's are still allowed to overland and still access light soft off road trails, at least for now.
If you havent't done so, dont forget to subscribe to my channel and to leave a like for this video if it helped you or informed you in any way.

    From what I can tell in the AWD vs 4WD videos, it seems that during the process of traversing rough terrain, the AWD vehicles actually do more surface damage to the trails than the 4WD vehicles. The computers in the AWD vehicles tend to take some time before transferring power from a tire that is spinning, slinging dirt and rocks, and forming a rut. Whereas 4WD vehicles distribute power to all four tires evenly, thus minimizing surface damage to a trail. Am I understanding this correctly? I’ve owned my 2024 Outback Limited XT for coming up on a year, and I absolutely love it! However, I’m kinda enamored with the Wilderness-but not so much with the 26 mpg on the highway, which is why I went with the Limited XT (yeah, that 3 mpg swayed me, PLUS, this XT was the only one on the lot that was being sold below MSRP!!) Love your videos-keep ‘em coming!

      @dannymcneal After some more research, it seems that the guy who got that letter from the NPS went on a specific trail that was "4x4 only." But you are correct. AWDs take a little bit more time to distribute power because of their open differentials, which leads to the loss of power when the wheels are spinning. I think it's going to be hard to enforce this rule but I also feel like AWDs have come a long way and are more than capable nowadays especially when people modify their cars (lift kit, more aggressive tires, taking off their bumpers, etc) and you can even add lockers to some AWDs like the outbacks. After going from my Subaru Outback Wilderness to my Ford Raptor, there's just way less drama with going off road. You don't need much power to go off road but gearing is really important. Also wheel articulation is important too. Most easy trails can be done in normal cars but trail conditions are always changing. Even an easy trail can get so difficult after a wash out or when it's raining/snowing. If any new concrete details come out of this or if this turns out to be a non issue in the future, I will make another video to update everyone. A lot of my friends drive AWDs on the trails and all their cars are pretty capable because of mods.

    Don't have any glitchy situations to report on my Outback (non-wilderness) and I average about 30 mpg consistently. I don't do off-road other than the occasional unpaved road. I am curious about whether my outback could go where yours has gone. In other words, given what you said about not risking it, I wonder what the advantage of the wilderness is for you. the touch screen is not phone-quick but it's not unusable either. I have no complaints there.

    • @youraveragejoeadventures
      @youraveragejoeadventures Před 3 dny

      @altairjb we did a lot of off roading and so I would say the ground clearance and the gearing. We have since gotten rid of it for a 4x4 because at the end of the day, we needed more capability. It just couldn't do some of the trails we were trying to go on. I know everyone's needs are different but for our situation, I would rather have more capability than good MPGs. The MPGs were just a little shocking to us becuase it was only a 4 cylinder engine like a civic, but the turbos and height of this car made it eat gas like it was a v8 or something. The 4runner got about 15 MPGs but at least that car has a true 4x4 and better wheel articulation. Great car while we had it though. The extra space (compared to my Mazda 3), the AWD and wanting a wagon that was decent on gas, that's what sold me on the outback.

    I think this is a very important video and I appreciate you making it. I don't think you should down play your experiences by saying "This is just me nitpicking" because some of that stuff is seriously important. Lagging infotainment system is completely unacceptable in 2024 and it's a serious safety risk. It should not be doing that. Stopping on the highway? OMG that is SOOOO VERY DANGEROUS!!! Most people don't even realize this but there is a minimum speed limit on the highway of 40 MPH. You can actually get a ticket for going too slow on a highway. WHY?! Because the closing speed between 70 MPH and 40 MPH might be only 30 MPH but that's A HUGE difference in speed and with people that are simply driving on the highway, their reaction times are lowered. So coming to a complete stop is unacceptable and is a MASSIVE safety risk. It's unconscionable that Subaru does this and doesn't allow it to be turned off. WOW! Talk about setting the company up for a HUGE lawsuit....this is it. Anyway thanks for the feeback. I'm definitely avoiding subaru until these things are addressed.

      @jontnoneya3404 @jontnoneya3404 thank you sir! We've been in the market for a truck camper for 6 months now and can't really decide on one. We're kind of stuck between the Bruin XL by Orudesign or the Tune M1 by TuneOutdoors but I don't know why I get this unsure feeling about it. I really like the box style truck campers and being able to stand up in it in any weather to rock the baby to sleep, stretch my legs, and cook whether it's raining or snowing. If you haven't seen either camper, I would just google to see what they look like and you'll know what I mean. That being said, none of them is making me want to jump the gun, even though they all look decent. I don't think there is a perfect one out there but I wanna hear someone with an honest review vs people that just bought them and are in love with their "new" camper. Thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely check him out to further help me decide if this is what we really want because none of these options are cheap! Most of the decent ones are about $12-15k and can get even pricier once you add your own customizations to them. So we really want to be sure before we throw down the funds for them. I'll let you know what we decide, if we even get one, in the future. Here is our first adventure in the Raptor that I KNOW the Subaru would have gotten stuck in because we took the Subaru here too and scrape the front bumper and back bumper so many times and it was during the dry summer season. • @youraveragejoeadventures
      @youraveragejoeadventures Před měsícem

      @davidpiccolo3039 they are pretty realible and safe but it depends on how someone takes care of their car. Any car can be realible if you keep up with preventative maintenance. Toyota just recalled over 100,000 of their newest Tundras, and Lexus GX600s because of an engine failure on the 2023 and 2024 models. So even a known realible brand like Toyota can have issues. When we owned this car, it had an oil seal leak at only around 4000 miles but it was pretty realible other than that. Unfortunately we got rid of this car at around 30000 miles to get a more capable off road car because we were going off road a lot. So I wouldn't know how realible this car is in the long run. But up to when we sold it, it was realible for us.

    Subarus have always been a point A to point B car, save for the STI (which they no longer make). They are all safe, practical, but don't really excel in any specific area. They are the jack of all trade, master of non type car. I had a '17 OB 3.6L, loved the motor but the MPG sucked.

    Ran across this video, good choice not to go at it alone. We just did this trail last weekend, my Silverado ZR2, a 4x4 Jeep Wrangler 4 door, and our in-laws stock 2015 Subaru Outback with AT tires. No lift or anything added (other than the all-terrain tires), base stock. The only reason we attempted it was because we had the ability to pull the Outback out of any problems, and we made sure we didn't hold up any other trail runners with our slow progress. It took us 3 hours to complete, but we made it. We had to stack rocks at times along with some really good spotting. X-mode worked well, car is impressively capable. Our issue of course was ground clearance and trany overheating up the initial grade and switchbacks. We stopped twice to let it cool and finally completed the trail. Camped for the weekend and truly enjoyed it. The trail out was not as bad, mostly all downhill. Still had clearance issues for the Outback but in the end, left with some minor trail bumps due to the clearance and long front end, approach angle. No oil pan damage either. Wouldn't suggest it with a stock Outback if you're not prepared to do some recovery if need be, and alot of patience. It can be done, all of the other trail runners were impressed to see it camped at the lake. Well worth the time.

    I just purchased the CRO45L with the split lid and the battery. I haven't used it yet, but when plugged it in to test it, it worked great. The ONLY issue I have is the battery. Can someone explain to me, why they don't provide a charger for the battery? I think my 200W Anker solar panel could charge it, but I don't know if it will charge the battery AND run the unit at the same time. And if I can't keep 45-50W coming in from the solar panel, they suggest turning the unit OFF. Well that's not a good choice, my food would be ruined, right?

    • @youraveragejoeadventures
      @youraveragejoeadventures Před měsícem

      @mrs.c5471 I would recommend getting a separate power station for it. Depending on how long your camping trip is, I would say a 1000 wH would be ideal. We started with a 500 wH and when you use the freezer, it can kill that battery size in less than a day. As long as you have really good sun for that day, your solar panel should be able to charge your battery while it's powering on the fridge. The fridge will turn itself off and on intermittently and will not constantly draw 50w. Especially if you only use both sides as a fridge, it'll turn on to get to temperature then turn itself off until the temp rises inside. And if you keep it closed, it should keep the temperature inside the fridge pretty well because of its insulated walls. I know the battery you can get for it is small and can only run your fridge for 3-4 hours. I think that's more for day use at the beach or something. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions 👍🏽

    • @mrs.c5471
      @mrs.c5471 Před měsícem

      @@youraveragejoeadventures Thanks for replying, what everyone seems to be missing, is the unit itself has a solar input, which means you can plug a 100W (they recommend) directly into the unit "to charge the battery". I have 2 Anker power stations, a 767 and the Solix1000. I know they will run the unit, but i can't get a clear answer as to WHY they wouldn't have a separate charger just for the battery. I plan on using my 200W Anker solar panel which falls within the perimeters and hopefully provides at least 50 watts of power so I can leave the unit ON while I charge the battery.

    • @youraveragejoeadventures
      @youraveragejoeadventures Před měsícem

      @mrs.c5471 that's a good question but unfortunately I don't know. I've only used my unit with one of my portable power stations. BougeRV has a very good customer support system though that you can reach out too on their website. I would ask them directly.

    My 2024 doesn’t lag NEARLY as bad as your infotainment system. Have you taken it into Subaru to see if there’s some auxiliary programs in the background or something that’s making it this bad?

    • @youraveragejoeadventures
      @youraveragejoeadventures Před měsícem

      @PineTreePal besides the infotainment, we also wanted a more capable vehicle. So we traded it in for a 4x4. We go off roading a lot so it was worth it for us to switch out vehicles. That being said, I had a 2019 Subaru Forester Sport before the Outback Wilderness and that one had a great responsive system with physical buttons for the things I use while driving. I don't get how a newer model would go backwards in terms of infotainment. No cars in 2024 should have a slow infotainment especially when they equip all the cars with touch screens. Even our older 2010 prius has a responsive infotainment screen. This could just be our experience but I've seen a lot of people complain about this. For the price of the car, it should work properly.
